From: Void Singer I'll be lucky to catch it in 2d... 3d would require a day trip if I'm lucky. Wait to see it in 3D, if you can. Much of the cinematography is designed specifically for the 3D format. The flight, battle, and bioluminescent night scenes cannot be fully appreciated without the 3D. RealD... http://www.reald.com... has it's technology in quite few new films for release, most notably the Alice In Wonderland remake. I now know what I'm going to get myself for a post X-mas present - a customized set of 3D polarized overlays for my glasses. RealD makes their 3D glasses on the ultra cheap, uncomfortable, and ugly side specifically so people are encouraged to recycle them outside the theater doors. I've kept mine for retrofitting, if need be. I can tell this technology is ripe for the consumer film and gaming end of the market. It would be nice to have a comfortable pair of personal lenses I can whip out for whatever occasion.

From: Namssor Daguerre Wait to see it in 3D, if you can... This was my first 3D movie, and it feels like once you start down that road, it will be hard to turn back. Sure it can be overused in cheesy ways, but it definitely brings something more to the experience. Now they just need to figure out how to do it without the glasses. I get the feeling that's not too far in the future.

From: Indeterminate Schism Reports once someone has actually seen it please. Press-releases like the Reuters report and anything in 'The Sun' are just part of the advertising so no guide at all. I saw a trailer for 'Avatar' on TV this morning and it looked, if not awful, no better than 'Shrek'. Hype, hype, hype; is that where they spent the US$400m, like with 'Titanic'? i seen the fist 20 minutes so far and it sux

From: Jumpman Lane they told me to get out before they call the law! and NEVER come back! Was that before or after implanting your iPhone in your nether regions? BTW, whatever gave you the idea that the movie had anything to do with SL? p.s. I can tell you're having us on. A movie that only costs 12 bucks? Where do you live, El Salvador?

In the off chance anyone reading this will be interested, I've created a "Na'vi Language" group ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Na'vi_language ). They hired an actual linguist to create the language. We don't have the full grammar yet.

Avatar was the most visually rich thing I have ever seen. Just f***ing amazing.
Go.
In 3D if at all possible. Do not wait for the DVD or cable, this visual feast must be seen on the big screen.
We're going back this weekend for the IMAX version.

I just came back from taking my niece and nephew to see Avatar. Generally speaking I'm not a big Hollywood blockbuster type of guy or sci fi fan of any sort. My preference leans towards obscure indie and pretentious foreign films but I really enjoyed Avatar! While I don't think a non-SL user would immediately draw any similarities between the film and SL, I most definitely saw some thematic parallels between the two in some respects. The storyline was predictable of course but the cinematography and CGI stuff was visually stunning. I like how they used the 3D stuff in a way that wasn't cheesy but more as a tool to enhance and further immerse the viewer into the story ... except of course when people start whipping out mobile phones in the middle of the film and the glare breaks your focus like when you're in a mysteriously dark and moody sim and someone sashays in with a glaring facelight! One interesting SL note with regards to this film - I saw someone with a cool Avatar avatar this weekend, but when I looked around this evening on Xstreet for them, including links in this thread and from other blogs, it seems all the listings related to the movie were taken down. I'm sure you can find them some places in-world but it looks like LL has been proactively removing them from Xstreet - at least that's my guess.

Awesome movie. Watched in on the IMAX 3D! I will say that if I go see it again it will be in 2D. The 3D got a bit distracting sometimes and on a 4 story high imax way too much of the screen was blurry. But that’s more a criticism of the technology and not the movie. The movie f**king rocked!
