ok got it....so the general rule of thumb is to not accept stuff from strangers.
![]() I get myself a ton of the freebie crap off of xstreet. can't help it. some of that stuff is really fun to play around with. Should I stop doing that? ![]() |

Meh. Was handed one today at an infohub. Declined it. Like I do any random thing handed to me at an infohub. Candy an strangers, ya know? I'm a kid. We're taught that. ![]() How smart , how smart. Yawn! Whats the reason to hang out in any of those Info hubs? Ah! Staying there and clicking the "decline" button 100 times a day? Trying to help newbies who already know everything just playing the fool with you as a new alt - which is free (of course) How smart - how smart! ![]() |

Okay, all my groups are being spammed with this and it's always "this happened to a friend". Well, without some kind of documented proof this is happening, i'm chalking this up to urban legend. When i search this topic, this was the only post that was located. People and their friends... One of these years I'm going to find this 'friend' and smack her/him upside the head and just say 'stupid, stupid, stupid...' Honestly, whoever she is, she's been getting into trouble like this all my life, and yet I still have yet to hear her ever speak up for herself. O.o ![]() |

Help!!
07-08-2009 15:46
I'm not sure if it's the same thing. But as I was opening a box in a sandbox area. I'm not sure if it was the animation box, or one for hair. But when I went to copy it (by the way i'm a newbie) all of a sudden this really horrible message about jewish people came up. And then pictures came flooding in of two old men in there underwear. Have I been hacked? How do I fix this? And most importantly, what just happened to me? Does it happen often?
Thanks, Jules |

Thanks, Jules A) get out of public snadboxes B) If it was given by another person your safe just delete the item from your inventory. C) Don't rez things from strangers anymore. D) Nothing in SL can hack your account unless you give it that info so just...don't give it. Nothing can destory your home anymore short of a sim rollback and you having just rezzed the home (unless it's made that way...SINDY!). |

I got hit by something similar.
My land was empty okay? Nothing on it. Yet something was spamming me to get me to take an object. I couldn't figure out what. I don't accept things. Well I turned on Control Alt T and found the items - little cubes strewn around my land and up in the sky in and over the cloud layer - and I never met the people they belonged to. I did a search and one person said her account had been suspended while LL looked into the matter but that she wasn't a griefer. She had that right in her profile. So this must've happened to other people's land not only me/mine. I AR'd it all and then hit object return and it all vanished but kinda scary. It had to have happened over the holiday weekend, I had just been on the land not long before that and it was fine. From what I can tell they look for land that doesn't have object return set (it should be on 1 or above, if it's on 0, foreign items stay - and since I had object entry and build disabled, I didn't think there was any need to enable object return) and they fling items onto it. Then the items are 'stuck' there. Devilish. So if you own land, you might wanna check the object list on it, make sure there are no prims from people you didn't grant permission to, or that shouldn't be there. IF there are, hit CTRL ALT T and you might be able to locate the prims. Then, AR (abuse report) it, if you want: If you feel brave enough to right click/edit to see who owns the object. (I got rid of my Lindens first to be on the safe side.) Then put a 1 or 2 (stands for one or two minutes) in the object return space in your land tab. And the uninvited prims will go away. Needless to say, do not accept the object offer. Click decline, or mute the offers. Anyway there's been threads about the AO thing in the past, and I can vouch that I have been offered the Body Shop AO thing by someone who didn't know they were sending it out. So yes it exists. What it might do, I don't know since I decline and/or mute all offers like that. Back to what just happened the other day, I was pretty ticked at first that someone would do that on someone else's land. I checked other parcels, same thing; and on a neighbor's parcel too. So people might wanna go check and make sure there's no weird stuff on their own. And people wonder why people put up ban lines - lol. (Yes yes I know, that doesn't prevent everything either.) _____________________

Have I been hacked? How do I fix this? And most importantly, what just happened to me? Does it happen often? Thanks, Jules It's the item. To be on the safe side, delete any recent freebie boxes that were given to you by someone you don't know. One of them has a script in it that activates what you saw when the box is rezzed (dragged to the ground) or opened. Sad to say you might've been targeted for this hateful message because of your avatar name. Also if you wish, go to your account at the website here, click 'transaction history' on the right column, and try to figure out who gave you the boxes in question. And consider telling this story in an abuse report. (Help/Abuse report, from your SL viewer.) _____________________

It could raise the terrain above your home causing it all to get returned Can I has moneh I did that to myself once.... tried loading a bad terrain file ... thank god the sim wasn't populated.... TONS of jagged "needles" sticking up hundreds of meters high. Not a pretty sight/site. Yeah I think we don't need other people to "destroy" things for us, we can do it fine ourselves... |

Another thing to consider if you simply MUST rezz an item from someone who didn't order from or don't know: Go to a sandbox that has turned off scripts. And for the backend lag monster's sake, don't wear the items until you've checked them over in an no-script area!
But honestly the safest way to handle it is to delete it without bothering. _____________________

No offense Raudf, but if the scripts weren't running in the sandbox, how would the person know the item was bad? Wouldn't they find out as soon as they went home or to a shop or something?

Well there is a slight catch to doing that. It relies on the person knowing enough to look at the scripts inside. _____________________

Please, please don't make the same mistake I did and see this horrible movie. Granted, the plot was a bit out of whack, but thats what you get when you combine giant transforming robots, explosions & Michael Bay. I liked it! (regardless of plot) And the ending had a nice touch with the slow-motion run of Megan Fox (Baywatch style!) *jiggle jiggle jiggle jiggle* Now I'm waiting for someone in SL to try to build Devastator with ALL 80,000 parts (and yes, the CG Devastator had 80,000 CG parts modeled) _____________________

Next time, rightclick the box, choose 'more' 2 times, and then 'report' and fill out the form. _____________________

Well there is a slight catch to doing that. It relies on the person knowing enough to look at the scripts inside. In her example the person would've been testing an item therefore already suspicious which item it was. My concern was the false sense of safety if the item were tested in a place that had scripts disabled. If a bad script is the thing being tested for...see what I mean. _____________________

Same way I looked at scripts in stuff..... take it to a script disabled sandbox & see what's in the script. Even if its a "bad" script that'll steal your land, take your L$, and kill every first born child, if the land is not script enabled, the "bad" script wont do anything. _____________________

Same way I looked at scripts in stuff..... Sounds like you're answering a question - I didn't ask one. ![]() We are defining "testing" two different ways. Your definition seems to mean "open it up and look at the script." I'd call that examining or reading. My way was actually rezzing or wearing it (or whatever the case), and seeing what it does - i.e. testing it. That way requires no script knowledge at all, just a foolhardy/brave attitude. Your way is safer. ![]() _____________________

No problem. I mean, it's Transformers. You know, a Saturday morning cartoon about the kind of toys you thought were really cool when you were five. That review sounds just about like I'd expect a movie about a 22 minute advertisement for overpriced crackerjack toys would go. (in other words, don't get me to direct the next Transformer's movie) There was a difference tween movie & cartoon. In the cartoon- no one dies. The movie at least (as much as you'd expect from something like this) went with some physical reality. The Cars you see were actually transformable. No "Where does his arm come from". And I liked the fact they show that when a giant metal robot smacks into a human, the human gets Squished. That part always bugged me about the cartoon. Then there's the whole "Not all extraterrestrial life might be organic in nature" argument. _____________________

It can't take controls if it can't run at least once. Oh. nvm ![]() See? This is why should never open my mouth in a discussion about scripts. |
