From: Victorria Paine Ummm .. no.
Luckily I managed to satisfy my "mathematics" distribution requirement with a couple of statistics classes. I learned enough about calculus as a senior in high school to understand that tangling with that shark again would only result in a bloody mess. You could take Calc in High School? Hmmm....probably wouldn't have had room, with 2 years each of algebra and geometry........

What was funny was that my teachers always believed me when I told them that I was researching at the University library....

If you take Algebra I in 8th grade, you can get to Calculus in your senior year. Algebra II in 9th, Geometry in 10th, Trigonometry in 11th, and then Calc in 12th. Not fun. And then to have to take it again in college? *groan*

I never had to take Calc in High School or College--Algebra and Geometry were my highest completed Math courses...thank god.
Same with Chemistry...It was a prereq to Bio 2...but they never had me take it--I went straight to Bio 2.

The only reason I was at the mall was because it was an air conditioned place to ditch school, and we didn't have to buy anything, like we would have had to do, had we gone to Denny's. My weekly allowance was too small for crass commercial spending.

From: Perre Anatine Seems to me there are two types of people who log into SL, firstly those who use it as a form of recreation, watching TV, listening to music, surfing the net. For those people SL offers a relief from the stresses of work and life in RL. Secondly there are those who use it as a form of income. That income supports or forms their main source of income in RL. For this group there is probably little recreational value to be had from logging into SL. Like any sales job in RL there will be stresses associated with their activities in SL (whatever that may be); sales = income. Sorry Perre, I'm going to have to call this out as utterly false. I believe there to be many MANY people who have immense fun in SL while making money. For you to suggest that people making money are by default not gaining any recreational value is just not true, and I'd venture to say not even common. You're also implying (maybe not intentionally) that people are either making zero money, or otherwise using SL as their RL income. You are ignoring the vast numbers who make some small amount of money that simply validates that their product is valuable, or the people who basically pay their tier with their SL income. These people are "working" and loving it, or else they wouldn't be putting in the time at all. From: Perre Anatine My advice (for what it's worth) would be to take a break in just the same way you take a break from RL work. It's so easy to log in every day and before you know it you're effectively working every day. How would you feel if you went in to work in RL every day..stressed and knackered. Log into SL every day - particularly if you use SL as a form of income, and you're going to end up..stressed and knackered. Take break..watch TV..go jogging..get pissed..whatever..just don't log in!! Perre (Perre Anatine is not a professional physicologist, also please note his advice is usually more effective when accompanied by liberal doses of alcahol (note however alcahol does increase blood pressure...but it is more fun than stress - at least untill the following morning)) All perfectly good advice. Nothing personal should be construed from my above comments. And I'll add that liberal doses of alcohol enhance my enjoyment of SL and the forums. -Avion

From: Victorria Paine Yes of course it can be. My cure for that is simply taking a break for a few days. Or months. I did the whole addiction thing during the first year, got annoyed by policy and sucked into dramas. It started getting to me, so I sold up and logged out for a few months. I'd do it again in a shot because it's important to me to be able to take or leave a form of entertainment like Second Life, and not allow it to take over my life. Taking a break for a few days is probably advisable on a regular basis anyway. There are days during every week that I simply don't login, choosing to do something else instead. Usually something out of doors.

From: Dnali Anabuki I love Calc and Differential Equations! Its like Star Trek in numbers to me.
I see math equations when I drive my car..force vectors, centrifugal forces..though as I get older it is more a general form than the actual equations.
Gee, I though everybody did this! You still rock Dnali but I am scared now!

From: Brenda Connolly Go to the Mall or for a ride with Dnali Yes, we are using balloons to travel around the sims of Serenade now..very relaxing. And I betrayed my love of math in the end and fell in love with art even more and graduated in Art History and I can bore someone to death with more art speak than anyone I know. Verbiage at 4 paces..I'm deadly.

From: Sae Luan one of the biggest mistakes I made in SL to date. Why? The costume I made was made by another (more popular than me) resident about 2 weeks earlier. The guy had contacted me in less than 3 hours of posting my new release to let me know that he was assuming I'd copied him. Then another IM, that s/he knows alot of people in SL and that regardless of if s/he said anything or not, all of Second Life is going to think I'm a copy and a cheat. By the time I was online for the day, I had a small pile of IMs from him making me feel like if I didn't take down my hard work immediately, there would be horrible consequences. ...... But NOW in the past week, BOTH of the things I've made, I literally found something similar or just like them at other more popular stores within the same day of completing them and it has made my week horrible.
Wow Sae, that is indeed a nightmare scenario I can't even imagine how awful that made you feel. From: Dnali And I betrayed my love of math in the end and fell in love with art even more and graduated in Art History and I can bore someone to death with more art speak than anyone I know. Ahh...a woman after my own heart! One of my degrees is in Art History and my friends will accompany me to the museums only to have their eyes glaze over with the deluge of info I throw at them *sigh*. I can't help it....it's art! I never did the math thing..I leave that to my hubby who thinks Calc and Differential Equations are "relaxing". That's just...wrong. ~Ari

Verbiage at 4 paces..I'm deadly. I can relate. I minored in Music. When I discuss the roaring 20's with students I actually explain Duke Ellington's reasons for writing "Take the A Train"...

From: Sae Luan Personally, I've found myself VERY stressed out over SL stuff in the past.
Here's one example I worked SUPER hard for days on a costume. Taking the care to match up seams and make sure all the fabric pieces I used, the fabrics looked the same and such. I went above and beyond for this one avatar, wanting it to do good. It did do good. It was overnight, one of the biggest mistakes I made in SL to date. We discussed how if I was copying anyone, it was the makers of the TV show that I made the character from, but no matter what I said and what s/he said, I still felt that strange..animosity. This was a person that I respected and LOVED their things. This occasion, I stood up for myself and kept the release anyway. It has sold alot and I'm glad about that, but there isn't many days that go by that I don't think of that situation. Everytime I see anything by this guy, I get a little clench in my gut. Anyways, since then, this past week specifically, I have made many things only to go somewhere else and see something similar or the same. This is heart breaking to me because I make things to share with the community, and ever since the above incident took place, I refuse to release anything that I've seen elsewhere..even if I was finished before I found the place with something similar. It stressed me out so bad, I literally cried in RL, and I do not want this again. But NOW in the past week, BOTH of the things I've made, I literally found something similar or just like them at other more popular stores within the same day of completing them and it has made my week horrible. I am so sorry Sae that this is happening to you. When I first started out designing I was accused of copying my AV from another and I was so upset. I was just a noob in a new skin because all I did was change the eye color and Bust and Butt size the rest was still al la noob so I thought it was strange that they felt I had. In fact I was very depressed for quite awile because of it but I am still the same today I never changed my AV because I like my AV and I know I did not copy anyone. As far as others haveing the same or close designs as you. Well back when there were fewer designers I could say that might be a problem. But today there are so many people designing that really if you think about it you can only make a dress so many ways or pants .. etc. Sure you can put a hole here and there, some different texture design or a bow. But no mater how you look at it a pirate is a pirate or a witch is a witch... etc. Not much you can change in that. It could very well be that your and their tastes are very simular is why the designs look alike. I wouldnt even worry about it anymore if I was you. I know you are a good person. You help alot of people and are very concerned about all the people that rent from you. I know you are not one to copy anyone so just design and do what you want. As long as you know your doing nothing wrong that is all that matters! I might not count as much but I am in your corner 100% Hugssss!!!

From - Arikinui Adria Zazas..take care of yourself! That customer doesn't deserve to wear your designs. Thank You Ari From: Cherry Czervik Go do some RL stuff.
Buy yourself some mangoes or something nice.
Come sit in the grotto on my beach, sweetie ...
*** @ being propositioned by men wearing nothing but a wooden spoon, when is someone going to make the 'point and vomit' animation/gesture? Please? I'd personally like a point and laugh one ...
That happens all the time, finding it amusing is a lot less hassle.
I don't find SL stressful any more. Are you surrounded by people who are making you feel bad? There's a solution to that one, even if you don't really want to do it then removing such people from your life makes you feel much better in the long run. All that sounds great and I would love to go swimming or anything RL as it is my life is TV, Second Life, other Computer Games, and Walls. I have been bed bound for 10 years now:/.So that is probably why Second Life means so much to me. Its not the fact I can design clothes and run a business but I can do things I cant do RL anymore. And if all else fails because I do have good days , bad days and real bad days, I chose the last resort and that is sleep and live in my dreams But even dreams can be stressful LOL. And if you find the point and laugh gesture let me know that would be a good one to have cause usually they dont bother me just sometimes its on those bad days of mine I would like to do the kick gesture. But yours would be alot more fun instead Ok lets all have a group HUG!!

not really
09-26-2007 14:14
The only source of stress I get from SL (if I can even call it that) is irritation when it's buggy...in which case i shut down and go do something else. Or...frustration when my shop isn't making good sales. But SL doesn't have any kind of grip on my emotions other than being a source of entertainment and creative outlet.
I make friends....but I don't get so wrapped up in any particular drama in SL that it has an effect on me once I log off. RL is enough for me. Right now.....I'm agonizing over whether to take down my house and put up a cool Japanese home I really want.....but that's not stress.... just a tough decision cause I love my current SL house so much. lol
I think some people just invest more heavily, emotionally into SL than others....and I think it can grab you unawares. I also think I am not the norm, because most of the folks I've met in SL seem very affected by it. But that's also how I am IRL.....emotionally detached....my mom used to call me 'aloof' all the time. lol I guess I reserve my more passionate feelings & reactions for RL, and a select few at that. *shrugs*
