Is it really that bad?

Sometimes I realise just how much money and time I spend on SL and I have to wonder...when will this addiction stop and does it have to?

Primarily I'm a roleplayer though I also rent, shop and spend time with friends on SL.

Iv'e been active in SL since early 2006.

Odd question maybe but I was bored.

/me goes back into SL

Do the people who spend 8+ hours per day in SL have the time to answer polls?

I start to wonder too. I just don't seem to get tired of SL, and the time passes so quickly.

Not enough hours to reflect my time accurately.

12-16 hours.

Counter with "How many hours do you spend on RL?" It's the same thing peple - just a different venue. If you are home in RL and sitting in front of your TV... or doing this or doing that... it's all the same- just where you do it. I voted 6 hours but i do spend about 8 plus or minus i noticed after. In that time I do "household" chores like inventory maintenance at times other times placing of things - or building or whatever- not just ONE thing. In RL- m life is like that. Sometimes goofing off other times working other times walking the dog- u know different things. The question of addiction is if one takes over the other isn't it? So- I have a life - it involves things I do in a 3D Virtual world interacting with people across the globe and it involves hands on things I can only do locally. OK- I guess I am addicted to life- beats the alternative :D

I really don't know which box to tick. I've done everything from total-immersion 18hrs/day months on end to doing little more than logging in once a week to check IM's and all stations in between. A couple of years ago I had a succession of paid building jobs in SL so I was online pretty much continuously. That's since dried up. Nowadays I do a lot less building (although far more 'creative').

My background: I joined SL during a long and deep bout of burnout / depression / creative block / mid-life crisis. Second Life was just the thing I needed to get my mind off things. I tend to be a fairly intensive worker so I dived into SL with the same intensity with which I'd throw myself into my composition.

The result was me pretty much living in SL for about 2 years. During that time I was asked to do a live music performance: something I hadn't done in years in RL. That forced me to re-learn a collection of my work and things progressed from there. Suffice to say that I've since written and recorded 3 albums as well as writing a short orchestral score for a production by Ballet Pixelle.

So it's been time well spent for me. Not only a fascinating experience, but one that has had incredible therapeutic value. I'm now writing new material at a rate I haven't done for well over a decade as well as having learned a new skill of 3D construction.

Yes, it's been a win-win experience for me. So before one jumps to (possibly erroneous) conclusions about people who spend alot of time in Second Life look at how it fits in with their life journey.

Will I be 80 and still using SL with my reading glasses on and false teeth in a glass beside me..

If so I certainly will say I'm 28 still :D

I was in the 8 plus group at one time, but things have changed. Now, 1-3 hours per week is about right.

If you're including my time spent in the forums, or doing offline things relating to SL, 8 hours is far too low.

I think that's a good reply.

Honestly...I started SL because in RL I have agoraphobia and before anyone says it...yes I'm seeking help but I missed socialising so much that I sought it out another way..virtually.

I'm not doing so bad now but SL is still a huge part of my life...I think for a lot of people it is because they can have what they may never have in real life or explore fantasies that just aren't possable in the real world...then we make friends and the list goes on.

I don't think it's unhealthy...I think it's personal choice.

SL's greatest strength is that it can be many things to many people. It is also the one most in danger from what I see is eventual sanitation and homogonization. SL will probably be nicer, yet emptier at the same time. There is no rule as to how much time is too much to spend, it all depends on your situation and needs. Generally, as long as your real life isn't falling apart then have at it.

I don't know which box to check either. On weeknights, I spend about 2 - 3 1/2 hours. My hubby is one hour ahead of me and that has been helpful because he has to get up in the morning. So we go to "bed" at the same time in sl.

Now on weekends that is a whole different story. I say anywhere from 6 - 8+ hours.
