Are RL trademarks used in-world intended to be ironic?

Mike, that would fly if you were selling Nikon Mouthwash or Nikon Heavy Engine Lifts. Nikon is famous for selling cameras.

I know I know...I was only getting 'technical.' He said I was selling the same product...I was thinking of product in the singular sense...not product in the conglomerate sense.

The product is unique...the brand is not.

Thats all well and good, but you are throwing theft and "wrong" around like you're on some sort of throne judging people. Just because something is written in law doesn't mean its 'right' or 'wrong' maybe legal and illegal, and in any case, and if Nikon feels its wrong, let them deal with Bigwig themselves.

Psst Mike, you don't picket your own place. You picket the people who are not supporting your strike.

I've read most of the post in this thread and I keep coming back to the same question.
Does this so-called Nikon camera actually do anything?

Actually as someone pointed out, for *Trademarks* - The actual company doesn't have to be involved, LL will remove them anyway.

It is hard to use morality when referring to something as soulless as a multinational corporation. Whether it is legal or ethical is clearer.

Actually I make very few decisions based on whether or not some thing is legal or illegal. I can cite numerous laws that are wrong and that I would have no qualms breaking. Some I break on a daily basis.

Dear Confused,

I seem to remember from another thread that said camera has a low functionality level and is primarily a so-called prop.

Thanks Sally.

I was curious as to what a SL camera might do, other than being a prop.

My goodness my Guinness...

The camera does many different things, for many different people. First and foremost, it's a prop for photographers professional and amateur. Secondly, it has a working flash, so when you take a default 'snapshot' the flash lights up, dynamically illuminated the area. Thirdly, when you turn it on...a red light on the face powers up. If you 'wear' it, it fits perfectly in your hand and will line-up to the default 'snapshot' animation.

It may not be much...but it certainly 'does something.' :)

It won't take photos for you, if that's what you mean--a common misconception, which I don't understand. You wouldn't want it to take a photo for you...use alt-zoom, then in post crop it and tweak it yourself...I don't recommend any aspiring photographer to take photos from a SL viewfinder...that's just creating unneeded headaches.

Hmm...perhaps I should remove all the functionality explained in the product's notecard and replace it with the above quote. Thanks, I was having trouble wording it. All that other technical mumbo-jumbo just confuses people...

Counting down the minutes (60) until I can blow out of the office and drive another 65 minutes home, and commence with my SL....providing the SL gods allow me to sign on!! ;)

Other than that, just peachy! (Why I can't I send you a PM instead of cluttering up someone's thread??)

All personal opinions aside, this is from the SL Knowledge Base:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trademarks and Copyright in Second Life

In Second Life, we hope creators will use their imagination to make content. Some create things that are inspired by real life objects, like cars or jewelry. As Second Life gets larger, we receive more questions about usage of copyrighted or trademarked material in Second Life.

You should not use copyrighted or trademarked material in Second Life, unless of course you have a right to use the intellectual property. <SNIPPED>

It is often difficult to tell what may or may not be trademarked. However, use of designer logos and brand names without permission, such as Gucci, Nike, Louis Vuiton, etc., are usually not acceptable. Any resident may file an abuse report if they see any other resident making unauthorized use of trademarked material in Second Life.

Bottom line: we prefer that our residents be as original as possible when creating their content, and we ask that all of our residents respect the intellectual property rights of others.

Well Damn. This seems pretty clear & succinct to me. I don't understand why it's even being debated. (oh, I mean "discussed";) :p

On a personal note: I discovered a store recently. It is a big, beautiful build, very posh, very high end by SL standards and the clothing they sell is amazing; delicious textures, beautiful clean lines... *sighs in ecstasy*

It was obvious to me that this store and the lovely content therein is modeled after a popular and quite expensive RL designer. So, maybe the content creator borrowed a little bit from the CONCEPT of the RL store, but there was no outright infringement of this well known brand.

Kind of a "you know what I'm getting at - wink wink - but it's still uniquely mine".

Uber cool, IMHO.

*afterthought: didn't there used to be a 'Starbeck's" coffee shop somewhere? :D

Thanks for the reply and info Mike. I didn't mean to imply that your product does not do anything. It was just a question. Admittedly the tone was a bit on the smart-arse side, but I get that way waiting for a long weekend to start.

Earlier quote from Michael Bighead: "It is first and foremost a prop ...." ... blah, blah .. goes on to explain why it is much more than a prop ... blah, blah, blah"

I didn't think it possible, but you've just fallen in my estimation.

Wow, that sucks! I'm actually taking tomorrow as a vacation day, and then, working for a law firm (they're notorious for never working), we're off Thurs and Friday, and then of course the weekend.

But on the other hand, there are a lot of days when I'd rather work for Starbeck's or FalMart ;)

Actually the functionality of the camera sounds pretty cool.

As I understand it there is no LSL script function allowing automated snapshots, so its about a much as a SL camera could do.

Although yeah its mainly a prop.

So is the bed I own in SL. I don't sleep logged in ..

I could have cybersex in thin air just on animation balls, but it takes some of the fun out of it.

Hehe - I actually work in the law field myself :) But . . well, we almost never get any days off. Very reluctant to let us go home in the evenings or take days off (ok, we can go home, but very few days off).

I should have joined a law firm. More money, and now I hear, more days off. :(

Eh? This post makes no sense, and isn't grounded in the reality most of us share. lol.

Sorry, but it doesn't. Thanks for playing though.
