So, I looked at the "whorish types" thread foolishly expecting to find some actual discussion of SL fashion trends. I know, I know, it was too early in the morning for me, what can I say? But this really is a topic I'd like discussed seriously.
It's really _hard_ to dress modestly in Second Life.
Now, obviously, there's a wide continuum between walking around nude and wearing a full burqa. But unless you want to settle for tee shirts and jeans or a wardrobe full of fuzzy slider clothes, it seems to require a lot of time and effort and lindens to dress on the more discreet end of the spectrum (and a fondness for the Victorian helps as well). I don't care what other people choose to wear for themselves, but it bugs the beejesus out of me how difficult it is for _me_ to find shoes that aren't stilettos, skirts that are longer than mid-thigh without being prim-heavy ball gowns, and tops that aren't sleeveless/shoulderless/strapless or with too much cleavage. (I can't tell you how many beautiful gowns I've seen in SL that I would have bought in a minute if they'd just had covered shoulders or a matching jacket included -- and this includes Victorian/Caledonian and so-called Freewoman's styles.)
With a few exceptions (Silent Sparrow, yum), most of what doesn't fall into the indiscreet category tends to fall into the "modern casual" category -- and even most of that is sleeveless or short-skirted. I don't want to spend money on things in SL that are no different than what I could buy in RL -- what's the point?
Why is so hard to find women's clothes in SL that are creative, beautiful, and modest all at once? Where are the designers that make these clothes hiding? There must be at least a few besides Silent Sparrow. The September thread mentioned Blaze, Nicky Ree, Last Call, Oryx Tempel, and Kaimi Kyomoon, but that's still a pretty small list (and I'm sure some of them fall into the modern casual category too). Lots of people mentioned dressing conservatively in the September thread -- so where are you finding your clothes at?

IndustriElle has nice professional clothes (they are listed in my picks) and I found a store yesterday at the Blingtard Mall (don't let the name scare you...lol) that has a store in it with GORGEOUS professional/modest clothing. Will get the name next time I'm in world to add to this post... or feel free to IM me in world There really is a nice selection of quality clothing out there

I've really fallen for the designs at a Icing. It is a smaller shop, but the clothes are very high quality and are a nice blend of classy, sophisticated sexiness and girl-next-door charm.

Another "hell yeah" for Icing - it's really sophisticated and classy...
It's also well worth joining their update group as the designer often sends out one of the full-priced outfits as a freebie to her subscribers.
Last Call also has some gems, but hurry as they're closing down soon; fortunately, this means everything is reduced to L$100.
First Impressions is a new store I came across recently - some nice basics in there.

Modest clothing
02-17-2008 12:48
The way people define "conservative" and "modest" varies, of course. For me, if an outfit leaves a gap between the top of my pants or skirt and my top, it is not modest and I won't wear it. I have found great clothing in SL, but usually only a small part of the offerings in any given store will work for me. Those looking for clothes that cover more may find things in: Abbie's Boutique (Dusun 152, 213, 24); Paper Couture; Fashion Forward Designs (Ileina Cove 80, 36, 21), Total Betty (Son 174, 208, 27); Sweater Girl 2 (Plush Chi 110, 44, 21), First Impressions (Ooohlala Mode 174, 67, 2 ; Irelyn (Ooohlala Mode 149, 58, 27); Marzipan's Closet (Business Bureay Isle); Muism (Muism 174, 144, 25); and Solange! (Wall 228-154, 99)--the suits are all the way in the back. Happy shopping!

*cough* Caledon. I see that you have already mentioned this, but believe me, not everything in that particular vein is designed for plunging bosoms etc.

Since the OP mention Free Woman styles (roleplay who demand modest clothing) I can mention that De Fleur fashions sell both modesty jackets and undershirts. Only in packs, but it's transfer, so two can split a pack. Think it's so cheap as 20 L pr. jacket in the pack. Their ballgowns often has different tops and layers, and can be both worn as ordinary deep cleveage or modest tops.
Same with Milady's fancy, different tops included.
Evie's closet has packs of undershirts free that match the ballgowns.
And when it comes to other clothing...hard to find pants that isn't so low that all the tummy shows. Pixel Dolls has wide belts on jacket layer that can be matched with a lot of outfits. They gave a set free to their group, not sure if it's still in the subscribe-o-matic. Pixel Dolls sell all their clothing in different layers, so a top with modest cleveage from them can be worn under ordinary shirt layers.
I've mentioned Persona in the other thread.....can say it again. Ivalde has some clothing that cover shoulders. Sets with pants also.
My #1 favourite item must be the jeans jacket from Bare Rose in their "Nora" set....can cover shoulders and arms in a more tough way than other stuff.
Artilleri and Tuli has some high-waist pants too... no more naked midriffs.

Armid has some nice classic looking styles in their shops.... They are very 'Gap'ish and clean looking. I can't stand the whorish look either...and lets face it, sexy is in the eye of the beholder. If my fiance could dictate style...he'd have all the girls in very spartan yet feminine looking business attire with understated jewelery and makeup. There's two kinds of sexy....trash or class baby. *wink*

I've noticed it's quite difficult for men to dress conservatively as well.
You generally see either:
a) Bronzed muscle hunk, covered in tattoos and no shirt b) Gangsta/rapper style c) Mafia/hardman style d) Noob with prim genitalia hanging out flapping about like a fish out of water
There's a few 'jeans/t-shirt' combinations around but they tend to be rare.

I have clothing from a number of places in SL. Dresses from True North Designs , whose owner Dellybean North very kindly made some custom order truly modest bathing suits for me last summer. First swimming suits I've seen without the tushy hanging all the way out in view. I have quite a few outfits from Ivalde and [Back and Forth]. I've also picked up clothing from Rebel Hope, Pixel Dolls, Nyte 'N Day, ETD, and others. For those of us who prefer a more conservative clothing look, we just have to keep our eyes open and take the time to check out shops where we happed to be. We'll never find a complete one-stop store with everything to our liking. I just have a folder in my inventory for my favorite clothing store LM's and I check at least one a month to see if there is anything new.

Just a few names from stuff in my inventory...
bossa nova DiamonX Studios Ingenue Q Branch Total Betty Tuli
For Victorian/historical, check out Skye Qi's Vintage Clothing Reproductions. Awesome, classy stuff!
I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting...
(Of course, everyone's idea of "conservative" is different, but I hope at least some of these will work for you.)

The need for FW clothes that are seriously modest (but not frumpy) may eventually push me into trying to make my own clothes. I have two left thumbs so we'll see how it goes! Also: I wish all designers would include a mesh skirt with all prim gowns. Even though some people will not wear them because they're afraid to look "fat," I want to still appear to be in a skirt if I sit or kneel. I plan to check out all the suggestions the next time I can be in world

Wouldn't "Creative Conservative" be an oxymoron??
Ok, women get more choice in conservative clothes. Men get....um... suits & ties.

I second that vote for Skye Qi's! she's blooming brilliant, and she has a fantastic Scarlett O'Hara gown. Also Suki Syakumi has some lovely pieces, nearly any of the folks in Caledon, as Ordinal mentioned, Virrginia Tombola, Terry Lightfoot and Fuschia Begonia particularly leap to mind. *think think think* I'll have to post again later with the others. You might want to check out SLEX, it's a bit easier to do the searches there, then you can visit the shops in world
