...to my original post. I found the store that has lovely, modest, professional clothes (some for men as well) - StarSong. (Starts calculating how much L I will be spending there!)

I've noticed it's quite difficult for men to dress conservatively as well.

You generally see either:

a) Bronzed muscle hunk, covered in tattoos and no shirt
b) Gangsta/rapper style
c) Mafia/hardman style
d) Noob with prim genitalia hanging out flapping about like a fish out of water

There's a few 'jeans/t-shirt' combinations around but they tend to be rare.

Rogue has a very limited selection, but a few decent regular casual mens clothing.

Other than that, its actually a bit boring and frustrating to shop for a male avatar. It seems only the goths and suits have much of a selection.

Give me a good ol' hoodie and some dockers or jeans and some shoes without bling or barbed wire, thank you ;)

BTW: didn't torn men's jeans go out in like the 90s?

Just like in RL, the male has less choices.

Not sure if it's considered conservative or not, but I found some Dickies pants and Jacket at Hell Bop. And Artilleri has a decent shirt or two.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks! That's exactly what I was hoping for, although it looks like quite a few are still best for modern styles. I may occasionally wear modern styles but not often; I definitely prefer things with a historical touch (though when I get around to creating a business alt, she'll definitely appreciate all those professional recs).

From: Petronilla
The way people define "conservative" and "modest" varies, of course. For me, if an outfit leaves a gap between the top of my pants or skirt and my top, it is not modest and I won't wear it.

Definitely! No bare midriffs for me, in RL or SL, unless not showing belly would be inappropriate for the milieu. And my avatar defines modesty much more conservatively than I do. In RL, I wear ankle-length skirts whenever the environment permits, which isn't often enough, and since my av doesn't have to worry about hems dragging in the mud or getting run over by office chair wheels, I'm happy to give her all the ankle-length skirts she wants. But I'm not sure what this thing is she has about not showing bare shoulders, since I wear tank tops all the time in real life. But she's insistent, so I do what I can to satisfy her.

From: Arua Rotaru
it just takes looking around sl and using slexchange or slboutique to narrow down the search

Actually, I always shop on the websites first, and they're part of why I've found it so hard. You can't do a decent search on them with "cleavage" as an exclusion criteria; you pretty much have to page through dozens of pages of cleavage-down-to-here gowns to find just a few that have higher necklines -- and those few will still have bare shoulders! *g* Even searching on "Victorian" or "Freewoman" will get you heaving bosoms (though at first glance the Victorian search does look a lot more successful than the last time I tried it before my hiatus).

From: Nic Writer
For Victorian/historical, check out Skye Qi's Vintage Clothing Reproductions. Awesome, classy stuff!

The first dress I was willing to pay for, this time last year, was from Skye Qi, and I still love it. Glad to hear she's doing well!

From: Brenda Archer
Also: I wish all designers would include a mesh skirt with all prim gowns.

Can we repeat this? In bold? And all caps? Several dozen times?

Seriously. Not only would it hide glitches better (no pants-clad knees poking out), but a lot of the time, unless it's something with a huge bell and train, a system skirt wouldn't look or move all that much differently than a prim skirt. Some difference, sure, enough that I'd want the prim skirt if I'm wearing it to an "occasion", but not enough to be worth the prim and flexi lag for everyday wear. I hear about how horrible system skirts are for designers, and yeah, maybe if you're going for the modern look, it sucks, but I like a bit of bustle in my skirts. But the designers just don't include them -- or if they do, the skirts are either butt-length and no-mod or straight and no-mod, even though the gowns they're supposed to match are neither.

Plus, system skirts don't fly up and show everyone your bloomers when you fly, and it's a good bet that people are actually seeing the skirt the same way you see it. (I seriously doubt all the people I see wearing prim flexi miniskirts realize they're wearing ballerina tutus on my screen.)

I had to come back and mention a new favorite shop called "sf designs" since they do both mens and womens clothing. I've gotten some great corduroy slacks there in chocolate, tan and light tan. These are actually near the waistline and I don't have to worry about how much is showing in the backside. sf designs even carry some shoes that aren't 4 inch high heels. I love my hiking boots and winter boots I picked up. I gave a friend as a gift , the special "Xmas Executive Suit" and he loved it. I received compliments on wearing the "celestial gown" in red and I want the green one too, lol.

With spring coming, there will be fashion shows and some will be broadcast in-world. You can also pick up the new issues of some of the SL magazines, take a look at the articles or advertisements. Go take a look and see what the store/shop might have.

Wear an undershirt, and all those deeply cleft gowns will look quite modest. I use these quite a bit:

And if you go to Last Call's sale, check the posters using edit, and you will see many outfits where the tops are provided on multiple layers. Since they're only L$100, you can buy an entire outfit just to get the top, and not be overspending.

I was walking along the SL Railroad and discovered a little place called The Closet, on Heterocera. Adorable turtle necks and plaid pants. And Marlys has loads of very cute stuff, mostly vintage 60's and 70's.

My first stop for any clothes shopping is BareRose, they range from very revealing (which I don't care for) to very professional but no matter what they are always beautiful. And their prices are a fraction of what most stores charge.

I have also found some lovely and modest things at Nyte'N'Day, including the mid-calf length Vestige skirts, which flow beautifully.

I also attempt to make things to your request. Some things just aren't possible in SL, but I'll give it a try :)

Rihanna, I recently put together a selection of outfits I can use for my business interests here in SL. I can highly recommend Indira Bekker's clothing, they aren't the cheapest but they are good quality, fashionably formal and very stylish. You'll find them in SLEx under 'Women's Business Attire'.

Desdpite the name, Suki's Silks has some nice fairly modest "historical" type dresses, in amongst the more revealing stuff.

I found some great sculpty shoes, low healed pumps F.O.C. In about 5 different styles and various colors and textures.

Just search for Ada Quinnell then look in her picks.

I couldn't believe it loads of good quality shoes free, and even a pair of calf length boots.

It's really _hard_ to dress modestly in Second Life.

Ive had no problems. One example is the top picture at

Your right I love Chips clothes - Only wear them now because they are tasteful
and they LOOK great - I love the seams he has done a wonderful job blending them.

Wear an undershirt, and all those deeply cleft gowns will look quite modest.

I usually spent hours fussing over undershirts when I do buy a new gown. The problem is finding/making one that matches the color and design of the gown properly without looking like you just threw on a turtleneck underneath it. (Those DeFleur ones you linked are probably going right on my shopping list, but still don't really class as modest by my standards. The sheer lace in particular is beautiful -- but not modest.) It just seems like such a needless hassle when the designer already has the fabric texture I need to match -- even a quick, collarless slider undershirt or jacket included with the gown would help immensely if it was just in the right fabric.

Thanks for this thread, it's been a nice find. I don't have a struggle to look right in SL. I don't want to be a fashion model to the 9's all the time, but looking classy is better. Some do call it conservative style, but thanks to Britney and Paris it's on the upswing with some younger girls. I have also seen a fascination with more vintage styles, both over and underwear, as the thrift shops and vintage stores seem to be selling out of them all the time. I guess I do the same in FL and SL, and why not? I look fat and short by SL standards, YAY!

I am NOT a clothing designer in SL, but I *have* discovered that some of the issues with clothes in SL have to do with the way the Lindens set the different layers. Underpants, (includes tights and hose) are a perfect example. Even "all the way up" in SL translates to "mid" or "Low" rise in FL. Blame the Lindens, haha Btw, I saw a discussion somewhere else on how hard it is to create full coverage underwear, but that's another thread. Would anyone care? My friends all do, but I have yet to really find any tops or bottoms I'd consider "coverage." Regardless, for true vintage styles (pre 1950's) there just _aren't enough_ basic layers on our avatar bodies. I LOVE the vendors who have had the creativity and forethought to make tops and so on in all possible layers (Pixeldolls does pretty good with this): *YAY FOR ALL OF THEM* To that notion, and as kinda addressed in this thread Blaze and others have gotten pretty creative, and have cheated the "at waist" thing by adding the extra bits on the shirt or jacket layer. But when you do that it loses yet another layer. I started layering, not for the vintage look, but to prevent the nasty Teleport from undressing me completely everytime I appeared somewhere and waited to rez.

Yay for this thread!

im gonna get a bop on the head for this..but sometimes a simple mix and match with in your wardrobe can produce the desired results as well. have a v neck sweater on a jacket layer? pair it with a turtle neck on a shirt layer, or go to nomines or torridwear and purchase thier shirt/tie combo and wear that under the sweater!

like oe have 1800-Betties girl friday outfit? wear the shirt and tie or just the shirt under a jacket, or v neck sweater with a skirt from Hex, Mischief etc. i do this a lot and have been asked many times where i got that particular outfit from. try it! :D

ps: and for soem really nice and ladylike shoes: Teslas...thanks to whomever mentioned this store on the forums, im in love!!!
