From: Trout Recreant This is going in my profile:
If anyone here has a problem with me, please take it up with Madhu. She's not my boss or anything, but the time you waste bugging her is time I can spend creating more trouble for you, and it's not like taking it up with me would do you any good. She's very kind. Maybe she'll be sympathetic. Ha! Mine says "Take it up with Trout. He'll probably pass it off to Madhu or Lindal, in which case, you're probably SOL because they have way more important stuff to do." Edit: Now it says "Take it up with Trout. He'll probably pass it off to Madhu or Lindal, in which case, you're probably SOL because they have way more important stuff to do, and will probably pass it on to Max. You're pretty low on the food chain here, buddy."

From: Dakota Tebaldi I love profiles like that.
"I spend my days having fun, building, scripting, and protecting my cousin JJeek93. If you mess with him, you're gonna have to go through ME first!"
/me snickers. So the person with that profile has first rights to beating JJeek93? Then when they are done, you get to beat JJeek93? Well . . . seems fair.

From: Max Herzog Mess with me and I'll hunt you down like a dog. Dogs are good hunting animals. Loyal, tough, eager. Yes, it is good to hunt with a dog. It is good that you include your dog when you are out hunting people. Gives a friendly air to the activities. And if you are lucky, the dog will rip out their throat before you are able to get into range of their whining (the hunted, not the whining of the dog, whiny beasts though they may be).

((I remember inventing my nickname really early on when I was getting rather tired of the "You're cute, come get on this poseball." IMs. I had a rather brutal GTFO profile at the time with the final line saying "Please, call me **** so that I know you've read my profile. (^_^)y". As time passed, the IMs became much more friendly, I've made some pretty good friends, and I've established a good general role play. (^_^) In my current state, my RP has a history of abuse and home-imprisonment. Now that she's escaped from being locked up, she resides in her own underground hide-out and randomly wanders from place to place just trying to get by. (^_^) This is mentioned briefly in my profile, and it has shocked a few people. But, while it's been disturbing for some people to see child abuse in my RP character, I've never had anyone express any level of intimidation from it. If anyone has, they've been very quiet about it. (^_^) That said... The profile is just that... A profile. Sure, it's your un-spoken first impression along with your avatar appearance. But, still, Wait for the chat response before you decide if this is a person you want to deal with. Someone could have an angelic profile, wind up being a diva beyond belief, and dragging you through the mud with every word. (>_< ))

From: Sid Runningbear So the person with that profile has first rights to beating JJeek93? Then when they are done, you get to beat JJeek93? Well . . . seems fair. These sorts of profiles crack me up to no end. Aside of my doing something that could get me AR'd, what are you going to do if I mess with JJeek93, really? Tell him to mute me? Whee ... I suppose I can appreciate the sentiment, but, wow.

From: 2k Suisei They'd probably reply "Moist". LOL Well it's a nice, quiet, less laggy region, with nice builds and no adfarms anywhere nearby. Just one person with banlines repelling me from taking land closer to a view. There's nothing "out there" with the existing resident's property. Dakota, it's funny you brought that up. I do NOT think most behavior in SL is mature, and I think maturity and adult content can be two different things. One is just legal -- sometimes. That profile pic was explicit but not mature. Maturity IMHO means knowing when there's a time and a place and having some reign on libido in mixed company with regard to sexual content (had to add the last bit because maturity applies to so many levels). Of course being inworld - and being online - adult content in general doesnt phase me, and I have plenty of inworld friends with group affiliations and Picks I don't share. I drew underground comics in the 80s too . But these were just exceptionally immersed profiles. It's a good point that they'd outright put "dont contact me unless..." and I'll see where my IMs take me this evening LOL. I won't be ARing that profile since she builds nice stuff lol. Thanks for the advice. LOL PS Runningbear: Yes! One of them had picks like that. It was very amusing to read. Edit: LOL your posts were great - thanks for cheering me up (had a helltime with the company's site upgrade the past two days) - except someone who posted after me ASSuming something I'm so not. I hope they humble out reading the above info on the profile.

From: Holocluck Henly I am totally intimidated. They both seem thoroughly consumed by their lifestyles than anyone I've interacted with before in SL. I don't want these folks to think I'm after them from seeing their profile. While this is THEIR lifestyle, I don't need it in my face just because I want to ask about the land and what the region is like to consider for settling. Wow, you sound like one of those straight guys who thinks that gay fellas are always lookin' at yer butt. The simple fact that someone has a certain lifestyle doesn't mean they're not capable of discussing other topics. Mistresses have mundane interests too!

From: Max Herzog Mess with me and I'll hunt you down like a dog. No, no...pass the blighter on to someone else, Max. This is great...we could have a big Profile Ring. Anybody who tries to get some satisfaction gets passed from one to the next to the next... Lois McMaster Bujold had a system like this in her Miles Vorkosigan novels. It's how the Barrayarans handle diplomatic complaints. Just keep passing them from one department to another so the complainer feels like something is actually being done.

I was at an infohub the other day and there and was idly browsing some profiles. One blue furry had in his/her info that they are a griefer, SL is a game and griefing is part of that game and basically was saying yaa-boo-sucks to anyone who couldn't live with that. They also had an indecent shot of themselves as the profile, if it's possible to have an indecent shot of a furry avatar, that is! I'd never put bad stuff in my profile because I want to be liked, not disliked.

Meh. I figure the more "extreme" the profile, the more likely they're nothing like that in RL.

One thing that SL is lacking is- for lack of a better way of putting it- dynamic profiles. That is, profiles that will display different information to different kinds of people. Maybe the information changes based on time of day, whether the person is on your friends list or not, shares a group with you, is in the same sim with you.
In RL, it is much easier for us to adopt different personas based upon the setting. One can dress professionally and conservatively for the office, loose and slutty for the bar, yuppie casual for dinner with the family, and keep all the different looks for all the different groups reasonably separate. There's no fear of someone unexpected popping in on you via instant teleportation, or casually looking up one's after-dark activities via profile.
It's a little more reasonable to expect in RL that people have an appearance appropriate to setting, because people can more easily keep settings separate by time and geography. The technology of SL doesn't allow keeping settings separate by time and geography, so it's really a lot more difficult In SL, activities are not divided up around a 9-to-5 work schedule; time for work and time for play are mixed.
Besides, standing out, rather than fitting is, is the culture of Second Life anyway. Torley Linden does official work- such as the instructional videos- as some sort of winged creature.
The nude profile pic may be in poor taste. Otherwise, it doesn't seem to me to be particularly helpful to get overly concerned about the personal information of a person with whom one just wants to do business. That the personal and professional cannot be neatly separated from each other is just a fact of Second Life. Some residents of Second Life might have personal interests that do not appeal to me, but I don't see any reason why that should prevent me from saving money or obtaining a product that I want.

There is lots of areas for sale. Tons and tons actually. Send her polite note card telling her you inquirying about her land and the region, rest is irrelevant if she isn't interested in interacting with you or your money she won't write back.

Yeah, but I think I'd be good at the hunting people down like a dog bit. If I offload that responsibility to Brann, and she does the same to someone else, I lose that element of quality control, see?

The profiles that intimidate me are the ones that tell you not to IM them for any reason ever. For instance, I wanted to IM a builder once to tell her how much I enjoyed her work, but when I checked her profile, it said something like, 'if you're not on my friends list IM's are automatically muted,' so I kept quiet. I can understand having rules about contacting you during business hours, but I don't get the reasoning behind the ones that don't want to be contacted at all, period.

Darn, no pictures or av names. I think I'll put this in MY profile: From: someone If you can't get any satisfaction from Madhu, call Lindal Kidd. She wears a .45 on her hip and isn't afraid to use it to put troublemakers in their place. I am sure that she will solve all your problems quickly. However, I strongly suggest you have your affairs in order first. Have a nice day! But that leaves me wondering what kind of satisfaction can be obtained from Ms Blue in Hue...
