From: Colette Meiji Is there something wrong with the idea of the Residents of Second Life deciding for themselves what they want? There is absolutely nothing wrong with that provided we follow decent "rules" and act responsibly. I really feel that SL is losing some of its "magic' because we have acted like spoilt kids in a playground. Sure, there's nothing wrong in that per se BUT I do think SL could be used to better benefit the world community in reality. I think the Linden philosophy is focussed on that. The forums are a joke - we all know that - as soon as someone raises a question that requires some consideration (my questions are stupid compared to many key debates) it gets "flamed" or diminished by a minority of people who bully their views to the top. I am rarely into SL now because I found supporting the artistic movement was becoming frustrating as people insisted that SL was a means to make money with mediocre art. I am not sure where SL is going. I am concerned with real artistic projects and I do try and be as thoughtful as possible within the confines of my computer. I just shake my head at wasted opportunities. I guess I'll back out again now and lbecome the recluse I have been in sl and ead my private life with my partner in-world when I am on. I just felt a need to question some of what was happening because I am involved in issues (in my real life) that I am seeing here. I dont mean to offend anyone; I just feel I have a right to suggest we are making a neat "invention" a mediocre pavement game.

You have some validity to your statements, but why don't you start it off. What issues trouble you, and what do you suggest be done to improve SL?

you can still turn off show mature in search, and find the good spots.
you'll miss some that are in mature areas, but you can limit the contact to the bad.
think of it as google's sage search, it's your choice to turn it off and see the dark recesses of the internet when you click google it.

From: Jig Chippewa I suggest that the Forum "players" take a trip INTO the Secondlife world and actually engage themselves in "living" there more then just simply occasionally - not returning back to the forum but interacting with the thousands that have never heard of the forums and dont care about them. It's a very different vision that the Lindens promote actually IN the virtual world than is being discussed by apparent "experts" in the forums. I think that is essential to understanding what I was discussing. Fun is fine, silliness is fine, but I am really concerned that we are wasting an opportunity to make a good idea REALLY work for us as a meeting place and a shared environment. The Forums are NOT secondlife. If you really care deeply about this virtuality then you will apply yourselves to in-world issues that are serious ones whether we like them or not. Excuse me? Since when does participating in these forums mean that a person doesn't use Second Life? Jig, I myself am in world four hours a day, minimum. I see a great many of the people from these forums there, too. That argument doesn't hold water.

You come back to Artistic pursuits, which is fine, that apparently is one of the things you are interested in in SL. But not everyone is an artist. Not everyone even cares about art. you talk about SL being a place to exchange ideas, and intellectual pursuits. again, fine, that is possible. But..not everyone is an intellectual, the meaning of which I don't even know anymore as that term is thrown about so capriciously nowadays. You want to carry your serious RL issues to SL, which is fine, but a lot of people don't. We leave them in RL. many people do just ant to come and relax and let their hair down and play. And idf that's all they want to do, they aren't wasting any opportunities. They are using SL to the fullest based upon their needs and desires. If you feel there are wasted opportunities, perhaps they are your opportunities being wasted, not anyone else's. You can't make assumptions on someone else's motivations for being here, and you don't have a right to suggest "We" are making anything. Your judgements can go no further than you.

From: Brenda Connolly Your judgements can go no further than you. Someone asked me today about what I had seen in a certain place last month in reality - it was a refugee camp. I said I couldnt explain it, they would have to see it for themselves. I just love the idea of this world being so pure. I can't help it. I want the best for everyone. I don't judge anyone. You wanna know the truth? Don't waste an opportunity to exchange values and ideas like SL offers. There ar epeople willing to go to the extremes of human existence to communicate like me and you have just done. Jig is going offline. No I'm not - If I did I wouldnt be who I am in reality. F's sake! This is a bloody important opportunity to expand our human knowledge. I dont know the immediate people who built this thing personally (but I know people involved in other ways) and I KNOW that this was an idealistic way of bring us together and causing a change. And ofcourse it makes money - everything does. I got riled up last nigth when I got back coz of this bloody thing about child avatars and porn and that awful stuff. I just think that we can interact on a higher level than throwing effing pies and sneering at each other. Make a change? I won't open myself to snide remarks. WE can make changes. That is the problem with sites like this - there's no commitment and only applause for snark and sulk.

I am going to disengge from the conversation by just saying we have different reasons for coming here, different visions and different goals. We are traveling different roads, perhaps yours leads to a loftier place than mine. So be it. I wish you a happy journey.

Think about it. Really think about it. I do. I promise you. SL grants solace. A world of people who can afford computers and who are literate. Aren't we lucky?

From: Jig Chippewa I do. I promise you. SL grants solace. A world of people who can afford computers and who are literate. Aren't we lucky? Yes but your dream for what it can be used for is not the same dream as others. There are many out there that can find the dreams here that they can't share with those in the real world. To you they may be a nightmare, but to them anything but. A person may consider reliving their childhood a nightmare, others see it as a return to a more innocent and carefree time A person may consider being an humanoid animal a nightmare, others see it as a way to be part of an totem animal and see the world differently A person may see a monster and consider them a freak, said monster can see it as a safe release of the pent up feelings inside. A person can feel a need to be controlled due to being always in control in RL, another can see it as a despicable deviancy One is a dream, the other a nightmare... yet both are one thing

Hello all,
I have been watching this thread and trying to figure out how to best say my peace, or views.
A little background I came in world five months today. I came in kicking and screaming let me tell you that. But I had a few friends here that wanted me to try it out so I did. And decided to give it a chance, and boy I am darn glad I did!
Since being in world I have learned many things and seen many things, been to many places I would never have been able to go to in FL, and I have met many people, that I am proud to call my friends. None of which turned me off of SL, if anything it confirmed my belief that there is a place for everyone.
Now I must hang with the wrong crowd cause I havent seen any child porn and the such. But then I dont go looking for the stuff. Yes many call me LIttle Pollyanna, cause I believe in the good in people. This person may have made that cause it is beautiful in their eyes that is fine by me I appreciate that they were able to do it and see their idea form and that I could see it.
Yes I spend many hours a day or nite in SL. Yes it is a release from my FL. I can come in and be. For many.... they dont get that concept of just being, and that is sad in a way, but if you do then it is a wonderous experience.
And I will end this with that I have actually have come out of my shell in FL due to SL. My boss has noticed it. So am I happy to tell others that I come in world.

Jig- I don't understand... Why would you complain about content and lack of creativity? Creativity here is where ever you turn. You yourself have beautiful art galleries - we do wonderful things here everyday- The Cancer donations thing going on right now, the social interaction, the building - the chance to meet people (hello!!! Introspective now- ) people you would never have had the opportunity to encounter. The personal growth enabled by SL is monumental - yes there is tons of inanities - but it is part of the human equation. Laughs at people that needs to say such things because they think it they are above others. Gesh. Lovey how people just think they know everything and nobody knows nothing......Experts? No......know-alls yes.......

There are dreams and nightmares a plenty in second life. There are people from all over the world you'd never have met if it wasn't for SL There are creations in SL that are not possible to see in RL The tools are there for anyone to use to create their dreams and nightmares

I can't do much "living" there...the crap performance won't allow it. But thank you for telling me what my priorities should be in SL. I'm also looking for guidance as to how to live my real life if you'd like to offer any directives. I also find it ironic that the person who once started over 20 threads in the course of about a week is telling us to stay away from this forum.

I'm going to keep asserting my right to make points and defend myself when deemed necessary. Sorry that it appears your Ignore feature is broken.
