Now that Conan's dragged me into the conversation....I think SL in and of itself is fine. LL as a business can't tell which end is up, and there are technical issues, but the world is what it is, what the residents make it to be. Yes, many do recreate the modern suburbia. So what? That's what they are looking for, who am I to look down on it?. Maybe they can't have that in RL. So they come here.
Since I've returned, I've wandered more than ever before, and have seen a lot of great places, some are astonishingly creative, some are edgy and unique. Some are recreations of RL comforts. Some are strange. Some make me laugh. Some frighten, and even annoy me. But they were all created by someone who had an idea, and made it happen. Whether their motivation was altrustic, or not, inspired or insipid, crass or creative is of no importance. Places I like, I return to. Those that I don't like, I stay away from. Just like Forum threads. It's not too difficult.
What I don't like about SL are the self righteous, elitist, judgemental , windbags who feel their vision is the right one, or the most important one, and all others be damned. Live your Second Life the way you wish to. Don't worry about how someone else is living theirs.

Certainly there are a large number of wonderful, creative, intelligent, engaging and original places in SL. If you can find them. Unfortunately, as Jig points out, the inane side of SL seems to be what's constantly shoved into our faces. I find it odd that, in a place where anything is possible, so many people are busy re-creating RL. Houses look like houses. With bathrooms! Shops look like shops. Why? I can understand that there is a desire to create here what we may lack in RL, such as expensive toys and beautiful bodies. It's a super feature of SL and I certainly make use of it. But there's got to be a moment when people realize that these things are also very boring. I applaud those who create unconventional sims such as Svarga or La Reve, for example, and creative malls such as Plunder. I wish there were more virtual experiences like the Van Gogh exhibit. But where is the incentive for the creators of such places? You can't seem to take two steps without some bipedal lizard in fetish gear demanding to crash whatever illusion a builder tried to create. I've seen some mind-blowing sims utterly deserted while any place that offers freebies or sex is crammed with people. And so what choices do builders have but to cater to a majority that seems mainly interested in sex beds and blingy shoes? Something's got to pay the rent. I just wish that we had a better search engine so that people can find the more interesting builds before the owners become frustrated and pull the plug due to lack of visitors. I know they're out there

From: Keira Wells As it is, I can say "I want to make a sex machine toaster that shoots buttered toast into my vagoo' and then DO IT! Not because I think it's hot, but because it's an idea (No idea where it came from btw). And that idea can be expressed better here than anywhere else I can think of, because it's possible to do it relatively easily. Hmm I always suspect whitegoods play wasn't far away as a theme for a sex sim............ As long as it's between consenting washing machine and fridge avatars.

Do I infer the meaning of this thread to be she wants everyone in SL to act more mature, stop virtually acting out various fetishes, and in general be responsible and straight-laced?
chyeah, right!

From: Jig Chippewa Even the forum has a thread that is totally inane - 11000 comments about nothingness. Please let that one die. I see you've been reading "How to Win Friends and Influence People" during your time away. How's it going there, Judge Jiggy?

From: Usagi Musashi Problem Keira is people send to much time in the forum and blog and not enough within the game........ Please tell me that was an ironic statement of self-deprecation. If it wasn't, I think you should switch off your PC and go and lie down.

Hey - I know what Jig is saying. It sounded more like a pep talk than finger pointing to me. This is a virtual world and I'd like to make my little piece of it something special, outre', someplace I've never been or seen before -- or even someplace I couldn't imagine before. But I can't. At least not right now. Real life, especially my job, has just about drained my focus. What I have on my land is sort of suburbia. The house is 600 meters up, and it looks like two mutated culverts stuck together, but it's still just a suburban house inside. But the reaL job is slowly getting better and I'm working toward being more creative. I'll get there someday.

From: Jig Chippewa the "experiment" is ours to make or break. So is RL From: Jig Chippewa We've been given the "place", we are human so we have the intelligence and "tools" - what can we do to make this place "sing" and be something people want to come to in order to exchange ideas? Again, we could say the same about RL. From: Jig Chippewa Nowadays I never tell anyone I am on sl - I am embarrassed to do so. Do YOU do the same thing? Child porn, low expectations, grasping and ineffective values systems, inept or ineffectual programs; let's get this place working. In SL - not on the forums. Ideas? Comments? (I expect the usual snide ones) Suggestions? You first. (I must not hang around the same places as you do) From: Jig Chippewa Even the forum has a thread that is totally inane - 11000 comments about nothingness. Please let that one die. Nothingness to you, maybe. Jealous?

I just want to know who is going to decide the proper value system for sl. The college professors that are still trying to relive the 60's? The politicians of the world that are only worried about lining their own pockets and getting their faces on the evening news? If these values suit the intellectually enlightened in the US, what about the fly-over states? What about the UK, France, Germany, Russia, China, Japan, etc. Should they have their own grid? If someone in sl is doing something that I don't think is right, I don't go there. It is not my place to try to enforce my value systems on them anymore than anyone has the right to enforce their beliefs on me. PS: Keep your hands off our "inane thread" /soapbox off

From: Damien1 Thorne I just want to know who is going to decide the proper value system for sl. We've thought long and hard about this and we have decided it will be none other than Dan Linden. Thats right he's coming out of retirement to resume his place as the Moral Singularity. Start collecting dirt on your neighbors now! Avoid the rush!

The same could be said of our "First Life". Why would you expect differently from "Second Life"?
