Can't We Change?

I haven't been on for a while. I just came from a discussion group in my real life about virtual realities, computer worlds, robotic relationships. I defended secondlife but I look at our world and I am sorely disappointed. We've done nothing with what we have been given (or paid for). Please don't blame anyone at Linden Labs - the "experiment" is ours to make or break. I am no saint here so I am not pointing fingers, but surely we can do something with this place apart from turning it into a pornographic or anti-intellectual free-for-all? It is becoming a thoroughly boring extension of suburban life as we know it. We've been given the "place", we are human so we have the intelligence and "tools" - what can we do to make this place "sing" and be something people want to come to in order to exchange ideas? Nowadays I never tell anyone I am on sl - I am embarrassed to do so. Do YOU do the same thing? Child porn, low expectations, grasping and ineffective values systems, inept or ineffectual programs; let's get this place working. In SL - not on the forums. Ideas? Comments? (I expect the usual snide ones) Suggestions?
Even the forum has a thread that is totally inane - 11000 comments about nothingness. Please let that one die.

Have you actually looked?

There are plenty of wonderful sites in world.

The role-play communities are large and growing.

You have places that are themed and wonderful in the build designs and people



Of course there will be the 'morally ambiguous' areas due to human nature.

Thats is because LLAB is letting the kids play their games. because if they don`t they start crying "UNFAIR". LLAB feels they can use the web traffic to post to the Compnaies buying commerial Islamds to say WE HAVER THIS MUCH web traffic going into our website......and this many people in the game......Start business really LLAB is doing........But its not healthy for the people seeing all this .

Just because the vast, most visible majority of SL strikes you as inane and uninspired doesn't mean there aren't people doing beautiful, inspired, creative things here.

(Not me - I sell cuddly poseballs for beer money. Guess I'm part of the problem, not part of the solution. )

Hon, without that thread, the rest of the forum would be worse off. Yeah, there are still other posts and threads that are really truly pointless, but quite a few less than there would be without that thread. It has a purpose, and it's serving it well, I think..



And honestly, I must say I disagree with you. Much of SL is lovely and wonderful, and put to very good use. Just happens to be (as with everything) that the 'bad' or 'icky' points of it are shown to the general public more than the good.

There are places that are wonderful to you and horrid to others, and vice versa. Don't push your own ideals on others, but instead help those who share those ideals get the word out that such a place DOES exist in SL. That it's not all about sex and porn and stupidity.

SL is not meant to be a serious place. It's not meant to be casual. It's meant to be whatever you want your little slice of it to be. That goes for everyone who owns a sim, or even a 16m plot. That little space is theirs to do with as they please.

I suggest you search a little harder, and find the good places, the places that you think you can be proud of, and get the word out to the world.

I know that I'm proud of most of what I do in SL, and I know my little slice is always something I like and feel I can rightfully be proud of. If yours isn't, then change it. If you don't like all the sex, turn off mature in search and go exploring. If you don't like the stupidity, quite frankly, SL is not the place for you. SL is a place many come to be less than serious, to have fun.

Honestly I wish there was more random stupidity and fun in the real world. Sure, plenty of serious, real conversations, but balance it with fun. Far too many people take their lives too seriously, in my opinion. SL happens to be a place where a lot of people come to stop being serious for a while.

Personally, I'm fine with that.

Actually, according to many country's laws that is not quite true.

The rest of us took it as read that Keira mean't "within the confines of applicable US Federal and local laws". That was a given.

You know I didn't mean it completely literally.

You're right, no child porn galleries, no child avs probably according to some countries.. doesn't matter. You know what I meant.

Read that again, but insert "the internet" in the blank instead of "SL". What's the difference? Would you be afraid to let your friends know that you looked at the internet in your spare time? If you aren't finding the worthwhile places in SL to visit, you may have to examine your search methods.

You maybe but to some others they have concern over the issues like theses. They just think its a game.

Keira, this whole thread is a prime example of the arrogance of a small number of SL residents - those that Brenda and I sometimes refer to as "metaversians" (because they can use the word "metaverse" without even a hint of irony). In their eyes SL is a place to be creative and let your imagination run wild, so long as what you create is something they approve of. God forbid we should use SL simply for having a bit of fun.

One of the few times (I think this is the second time I can remember) but I agree with you to some extent.

SL is not my world to control how every bit of it is used. And it's not yours to do that either. Hell, it's not even the Lindens'. They could try to censor it to that degree, but it wouldn't work, and I think that's obvious.

SL is not for one kind of person, it's for every kind of person. For every kind of idea (Barring illegal ones, for those people taking things literally)

SL IS a place to be creative. That much is clear, considering if it weren't the Lindens would've given us a predefined world and nothing else. But those creations cannot be censored nor moderated by any one kind of person.

There are Lindens that like how SL is, believe it or not. And there are ones who have similar mindsets to Jig. And there are ones who think on a whole different set of ideas. This is why SL is free to be so creative, because the Lindens are balanced in their ideas and power, and no one mindset has say over all of SL.

Start moderating it as you suggest, Jig, and you'll see SL not only lose those 'pervy members' but a lot of the 'vanilla' ones as well. Because SL won't be the same. It won't have the same creativity, the same quirkyness, nor the same freedom. It will become just another MMO, with the added bonus of being able to create some stuff. But uses would be limited, and creativity would be stifled.

As it is, I can say "I want to make a sex machine toaster that shoots buttered toast into my vagoo' and then DO IT! Not because I think it's hot, but because it's an idea (No idea where it came from btw). And that idea can be expressed better here than anywhere else I can think of, because it's possible to do it relatively easily.

I am against censorship of SL. I am against a unified system of 'this is the kind of SL we like'. I am against stifling creativity.

I am still against the illegal stuff (Mostly )

If you don't, I will be extremely disappointed.

There are tightly monitored and controlled virtual worlds with user content... have to search for them but they are out there... but you don't hear about them often and the numbers using them are a lot lower
