I use the ignore function built into the wetware. So far, that's been enough to get me through...

I haven't (yet) put anyone on ignore because so far no one's really bothered me *that* much. If someone's consistently an ass or just plain annoying, I can manually skip their posts. Or stop to read what kind of stupid nonsense they're posting and just laugh/shrug it off because they lost my respect. Often times someone is sometimes an ass and other times fairly normal. I generally don't want to miss the normal posts. Other times ignore is useless because it's just a one-off troll.

Sometimes I'd like a easily accessible (and undoable) ignore-in-this-thread or ignore-for-the-day button for when I'm having one of those days where I'm not in the mood to even see for a moment people's stupid bullshit.

I used it only once and removed the person from ignore a few weeks later.

With the amount of quoting going on, it's a pretty useless feature anyways.

I just think that ignoring by not responding to people that annoy me, is the easiest way to silence them.

They have the right to remain ignorant. Anything they say can, and will be interpert by us in any way we see fit. :D

I find Ignore on the forums best used when you run across someone who really pushes your buttons and it is probably in your best interest to not respond to them lest others find it hard to distinguish who is the bigger xxxxxxxxx.

^^This... When you argue with idiots on the internet, you become one of those idiots.
Keeping that in mind is why I've never had to use ignore, or even felt the desire to use it. It's just as easy for me to scroll past a post I'd rather not read, or one I think might piss me off, and just move on.

Lastly, I emphatically disagree that everyone has something of value to contribute. Everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, but they are not entitled to an audience.

One thing for sure, saying someone "has nothing of value to contribute" reads like an insinuation about someones intellect and worthiness, with quite a different meaning than saying someone "hasn't contributed anything of value".

Technically they ARE entitled to an audience, as well as their opinion. There's no guarantee it'll be a *receptive* or *supportive* audience, but the audience does come with the posting rights we all get. People are also free to *not* read something as much as they want.. another entitlement everyone has, but many seem to forget about during the bouts of jackassery that tend to flare up from time to time.

I know I have been "ignored" and probably still am but I have NEVER ignored anyone in forums or in sl itself. When I leave forums for a while its because I have to concentrate on what I do in real and I can't walk and chew gum at same time.

I have ignored a couple of people, only because I sometimes can't control my own big mouth and would rather not spend the day arguing with the person. They are no longer on ignore now though.

Hmmm, entitlement, ignore, receptive, supporter. It's all getting a bit like a Senate Hearing. :)

I said "I don't use ignore because everyone has value, experience, expertise and knowledge to share. "

I never said anything about what they are sharing necessarily being valuable. :p But I do think people are valuable.

No, nobody can force you to come to the forums and partake in someones annoying stuff, but by coming here at all you have already volunteered to be in the audience. The fact that you skip, ignore, or otherwise pay no heed to them means you're one among the attending crowd who prefers to pay no attention to them, and instead tune them out and sit there jamming to your iPod during their 5 minutes... just like the husband who listens to the game during the opera, or that guy watching his mini TV near the back of the court room... but you're still a part of the audience ;)

Agreed. I think that everyone has something, SOME kind of thing to contribute that's valuable to others in one way or another. It's the fact some choose to leave that at home and only bring the ugly when they post that helps foster more of the soured opinions of people. Although it'd be a pretty arrogant assumption IMO to think there's nothing more to the idiots than what they show here, it's still a good thing that you can *not* listen to them.

Nah, I didn't "come here" because the SL forums aren't a "place" like SL itself is. There's no active presence. It's as if the guy who plugs in his iPod just plumb vanishes from the crowd.

So, no, if I put you on ignore, I'm not in your audience.

You can't see them. They can still see you. They are still in your audience.

I never use ignore as I like to read the posts even if I think the person is being a dickhead, I just don't answer them if it wastes my time :)

I have my own internal system for ignoring/assigning weight to the outside world and that works pretty well most of the time. Thus I never considered putting anyone on ignore in the forums. I did have to *mute* in-world a grand total of 1 person in however many years because they wouldn't shut up (and they followed me from the forums, incidentally, which is just rude to begin with).
