https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-448This jira requests that LL appoint permanent moderators, resident OR Linden, for the forums. I fear that without more active moderation than we have had since Strife's stepping down, the forums will fall subject to 'griefing' and drift off focus. Aki Linden, Strife's pro tem replacement, has indeed been moderating (last action 1/4), but with a very light touch. And she is temporary. In fairly recent contentious threads on moderation, one thing that seemed clear is that a group of active moderators is required, to defuse the feelings that a single person is "ruling" arbitrarily. Having peers would also provide a venue for moderators to discuss threads before taking action, and could provide a meaningful "appeals" process. Qie and I are trying to work with the Lindens to make them see this Jira, and the forums, in a positive light. Aki, I sent you a message inworld about this a couple of weeks ago. If you want to chat, IM/PM or whatever always welcome!

Voting Instructions
01-08-2008 08:25
Since JIRA can be a pain, simple 4-step instructions on voting are below. *********************************************** 1. The JIRA login page is at https://jira.secondlife.com/cas/login?service=https%3A%2F%2Fjira.secondlife.com%2Fsecure%2FDashboard.jspa Use your regular SL login. 2. If you know the bug number (like WEB-44 then enter it in the "Quick Search" field in the upper right of the JIRA screen. 3. When the bug description comes up, look on the panel on the left side of the screen for the section called "Operations" (probably the last section) 4. The last item in that section should be "Voting". A single click there will register your vote. The page will change to indicate that you now have voted for this bug. ALL DONE! ************************************** The next time you log into Jira, you will see a set of links on the entry page like this: "My Unresolved Reported Issues | Votes " Click on the "Votes" part of the link and you will see the status of all issues you have voted for. Also, whenever you're looking at a bug description, in the far left panel you will see a line titled "Votes". This is the number of people who have voted for the issue, and if you click "View" there you can see their names. So you can IM your friends who haven't yet voted to do so

i'm afraid LL may just close down the fora if they find them too much of an overhead. We CAN learn to moderate ourselves better - just follow the Guidelines.

We aren't gonna be perfect, but we all can do a lot to keep things going and still manage to make it enjoyable as well as informative. the best testament to what a community this is would be to be able to self moderate. Nice job on the propsal and the instructions, Nika, but I'll pass.

when we had Strife, many people complained he was too strict. He really wasn't.
Now that we dont, people complain its too lenient. LOL trust me this is NOTHING compared to the old days of general.
While the topics might annoy some, there hasnt even been a flame war on the level that Strife would allow yet.
When we did have Strife those topics would have been moved or locked. So maybe this would have been what RA was like if he never moved or locked those "questions"
Sure the big concern is that they will shut the whole thing down!
But so far, its actually more civil than it was last year.

Great effort, Nika and Qie.
Despite all the current threads to the contrary, this forum is for Resident Answers. If you look at the recent threads through that prism, it takes only a few minutes of browsing to see we are veering off track. There are people who are posting here that other residents can't moderate and we need an official group to do it. Unless we want this to be General Discussion forum where people don't bother to follow the rules. In that case, I think we are fine as is.
I would love for this to be the new GD forum, but they shut down the last one we had and I would hate for that to happen to this forum, too.
I want this forum to be enjoyable and remain civil. But I think we need some threads to be occasionally locked or moved and for abusive posts to be brought up for Linden Review for that to happen.

From: Deira Llanfair i'm afraid LL may just close down the fora if they find them too much of an overhead. We CAN learn to moderate ourselves better - just follow the Guidelines. LL will close down the forums if they become a cesspool and a source of possible bad press. Self moderation works well if all the participants are well-intentioned. But if you have posters who are actively trying to be disruptive and, in some cases, destructive, I don't see how it will work. Forum moderators can do three very useful things that self-moderating cannot: receive AR reports, lock threads and recommend Linden review for possible suspension/banning. I think it is only a matter of time until non-well-intentioned residents arrive. And, if they choose to appoint new resmods, that will not cause LL more overhead.

I admire those that DO, instead of just complain. Also, nice voting instructions, Nika! I have to say, I just haven't noticed any of these disruptive people "taking over" the forums... A few jerks, maybe, but no one actively disrupting everyone else's threads. Unless you're all talking about me?! (sorry, not voting until I see bigger problems first)

I'd prefer very light moderation used only for housekeeping and extreme cases of bad behavior. You can deal with people when they act childish as opposed to treating everyone like children. Now I must go find my Blankie.

From: Colette Meiji But so far, its actually more civil than it was last year. Amen, but for how long will it stay that way? I voted. I feel we do need a moderator of some sort to keep an eye out for those occasional bouts of stupidity that crops up in every forum. Fortunately, we've only been seeing bouts of silliness, not stupidity.

Fortunately, we've only been seeing bouts of silliness, not stupidity. I actually thought Strife did a good job. I am fine with active moderation. I hope you all are right that it would be the way the forums end up that would be the factor to worry about. And not the "high maintenance" That would lead to LL shutting them down.

Yeppers... I voted as well... to have this resolved. I agree we need moderation to stem the (coming) tide of the 'free for all' greifing and trolling.
Stay sweet everyone! And Graph waves at Claire!!!

I'd say we need a bit of moderation here.

From: Brenda Connolly Not if we just don't take the bait. I think as a group we are better than we give ourselves credit for, despite a few weak links. Well, as tempted as I was, I did not reply. I totally agree, as a whole our group is fantastic. And I may be wrong about there being a chance that LL will shut this forum down if it becomes too much of a general discussion forum. But I think having a group of fair moderators is better than having us try to moderate ourselves, with no real authority to actually do anything other than post replies here. Especially when a thread turns ugly with names being named and personal attacks.

- When someone says something 'nasty', there usually is at least 10 people who will come around and 'defend' the poor soul, or give alternate advice. - Mute button - Aki Moderation is already happening, up to a point. I suppose, there's no harm in voting. It won't really change anything for me personally if there are more active moderators. I'm fairly new, so I have no experience with what the oldbies have described about the past problems... I saw one thread in here recently started by a 'problem' poster. Couldn't understand a word he said - nonsensical jabber it seemed to me. Didn't even consider muting, I just ignored the posts as there was no question being asked and no entertainment value for me. It's a shame that because of a VERY few boneheads, some will have to give up there FREE time moderating. Do you all really think LL to be so vindictive as to close a forum that is so very helpful to so many of their customers? Anyway, since most of you have been here longer than me, if you all think it is important, who am I to see it differently. I certainly don't think voting will do any harm... and not voting MIGHT, so I guess I'll vote. I don't know why this bugs me so much. I just always prefer taking care of things myself - not having someone else do it for me, you know? Stubborn, I guess

Think about it as if YOU were a Linden...

From: Usagi Musashi THey been talking about closing the forums for awhile now. But as of yet they havent. I doublt they close them. If you noticed yesterday, they were KIND enough to move the forums to a different server rather than delete them...I think they realise the forums are a retaining factor for many residents...think about it as if YOU were a Linden... they DONT want a mass exodus.
