SL or RL? If you could choose?

Eh, I'm an escapist at heart. I'd probably just end up playing RL all the time. :p

THis implies that RL me could step into the SL world for a while. I might. It would be interesting to explore what the world would be like for flesh and blood being. In many ways, I think it would be a bit disappointing. And I'd probably end up very hungry. All that prim food is still just prims, after all.

Would you swap your RL for your SL if you could?

My RL includes sitting at my computer and logging into SL, so I think I'd have to keep with the former.

I see SL simply as a means to augment RL, I've met some wonderful people that I'd never meet in my day to day RL world, discovered new ideas, and had my world view changed sometimes quite drastically.

For me however, the main work in progress is my RL, the flesh and blood me. The one who can't fly or dance or pay £5 to build a whole new life.

Every hour I spend in RL getting fitter, learning a skill, building a relationship, building a business, even getting my haircut, is worth 20 in SL.

I know that everyone's situation is different and also know that sometimes I'm not very sympathetic to the whole "my life in RL is rubbish, so I escape to SL" perspective.

I truly believe that time in RL "leveling up" or "earning L$" or pursuing a goal is far better spent than any time spent in SL pursuing a similar agenda.

SL has its place as an adjunct, but would I swap?

As a boy (before the arrival of the playstation or xbox) I used to run around outside playing cowboys and indians, or pretending to be action man with my friends.

I believe that roleplaying with other people helped a lot in my development and I learned a lot from those simple childhood games.

However, even if you'd asked me back then, would I choose fantasy over reality I'd have laughed in your face.

Sometimes I hated my chores, school, the fact that I couldn't really fly like superman; but swap all of that and miss one cuddle from my mum, or a peck on the cheek from the girl in my class with chunky braces and dark pretty eyes? No chance.

I'd swap... but I don't think I could live with the texture glitches. *twitches*

Good answer Gillian...

There was a time when i would have said goodbye to my RL in a minute, and stepped into SL... I felt so much better in SL, more powerful, more beautiful, more in control... I guess its a measure of how much I have come back to the light, when I realise that I agree with you now!

/me smiles

Still interested to know about others' views though...

imogen

the thing is though you were not "in" SL, you merely were outside looking in. Sure you control the avatar and what the avatar does, but you are no more actually there, that you are in any other virtual game/world/existence.

Would I go into SL, nope... I like my not perfect life, my not perfect house, my not perfect body/hair/clothes, I like not being able to fly, and being able to touch, and smell things, to feel the wind, to taste the rain in the air...
Would I get those in SL... even if I could walk through the "looking glass"... I doubt it.
(and even if I could, I still would not step through that looking glass... think matrix)

Imogen

Everything I dedicated my real life to and achieved success with has been destroyed by people with real power and endless funds.

In Second Life I can still make stuff that makes a few people happy. I would keep SL at this point in time. SL could be made lots better too. So right now it is the age old question of when rich people decide to destroy the playground just because they can. That is when SL will no longer be worth participating in.

All good things in life are destroyed by rich people that like to torment poor people. Until the inevitable happens and the rich pay for their sins the hard way. Rich people in power should be required to watch the film of Mussolini's last day every morning when they wake up.

I would NOT want my RL peeps in SL. SL is a means of temporarily escaping RL for me, so I would swap it for a day or a month, but not longer. (It would be cheaper than a real vacation.)

But if forced to choose permanently, I would give up SL and read more books.

As much as I love imagination and always have - I choose reality every time. As painful, inconvenient, dull, and endless as it sometimes seems. If we lose reality what else matters?

If SL could become as fully realized as real life (visually and sensorally) then I would jump over in an instant. I don't know if I would stay permanently though. This sort of parallels all the sci-fi stories where the protagonist is transported to another dimension/world where his day to day worries are nil and he feels empowered and heroic. In the end though, he always returns from nirvana to take hold of his real life back on planet earth. I think that would be inevitable. I couldn't be lost in fantasy land eternally.

Hmmm most of my RL family is already in SL with me so thats a toss.

In the end I would have to say RL wins. I refuse to trust my existence to the whims of the SL servers OR the Lindens

Good point - what happens if we all went into the grid a la The Matrix, and someone pulled the plug? :p

I have a good real life, don't get me wrong... I am currently rebuilding a life, from a time when my RL wasn't so good, and I am proud of that, and it's interesting... I have two good kids, still on good terms with my ex, I do a job I care about, and I have enough money to give me the small things in life that I take great pleasure in, and many of the things I take pleasure in don't cost money.. like sunshine, smiles, and my first cup of coffee in the morning.

What I am asking is....

If the monitor became suddenly like Alice's Looking glass... and you could step through it into the world of SL... would you? For a day? a month? a year? forever?

Lets take it as read that you could take those you love with you, since that is one of the main things that would stop me...

The reason for my question is that recently I saw someone describe their RL.... which seemed pretty rich and full, and I wondered what drew them to the SL life when they had so much.... what made them work hard for that RL and yet still come to SL and work damn hard here too? My guess is, that they come for the people, and the creativity, more than anything more tangible... but what do you come for, that your real life doesn't give you? W

Would you swap your RL for your SL if you could?

interested to know..

Imogen

would I have to wait for someone to use the keys to move me once I got there or would I be stuck in a "away" mode?

Also, I seen to many horror movies where you can never leave..

Let's see, out here I'm a human with a bum leg, in there I'm an invulnerable shapeshifting ferret who can fly and teleport and make cool stuff happen just by thinking about it. AND I can give the same godlike powers to everyone I know? Decisions, decisions...

Um...

Why is this even a question? Monkey or demigod? I'll take the demigod, thanks.

But consider this, do you ever wake up and your alarm clock says "Too many people awake today, please try again later"
Every goddamn morning.

From: someone
Or go to the checkout counter and your wallet says "unable to process transaction, please try again later"
Yes, I was in Houston for Hurricane Ike.

From: someone
Or even, you're about to get lucky, you take of your pants, and your detachable pecker isn't rezzing? Please try again later?
Happens to everyone eventually.

Gosh, this is an oldie - but a goodie :)

It's very tempting, but I guess I'd miss the kids (eventually). A fortnight holiday in SL would be very nice though.
