Hi, Cody. *hands you a cookie*

First, let me say that outbreaks of nudity at the Hangout are fairly rare. I believe they are not welcome before 8 PM SLT, is that right? However, there have been parties and events where nudity occurred as part of the event. It IS a bar, after all! But it is not generally the case that one TPs into the hangout and sees nude people. To all things, moderation.

Yes - certainly, I'm sorry if I lent the impression that people are naked a lot at the Hangout. I've been there lots of times, and I've only ever heard about such incidents and events; I've never seen one.

I don't know if I would feel this way about all SL kids, though. I first met you in the forums, so always think of both you and Mari as the "adult" voice you speak with here. You, in particular, have a "I'm wearing this kid" feel about you, as opposed to Mari, who has a more consistently precocious child kinda feel. I still give you cookies, though, 'cause I like to. But, if conversation wandered into risque territory around either you or Mari, I wouldn't bat an eye. Which I would around other SL kids.

I would also like to point out that cookies are always welcome and in fact encouraged.

I can assure you I wouldn't give a cookie to a child - it encourages zits and they hang around your heels like dalmations.

Now we're into why people have kid AVs?

Try it. For me, one unexpected effect of being a kid onscreen was to heighten my sense of wonder and fun while exploring. And, since part of my pleasure in SL is the wonder of encountering over-the-top bizarre stuff, it's somehow very *right* to be a kid sometimes.

I wish the RFL builds were still up. Going to Babbage's Mars build and machine exposition as a kid woulda been killer.

And if their childhood were so awful why try and go for another turn on the roundabout?
Because this time they're in charge and can make it "not awful". And if we eliminated everyone who's using SL for escapist fantasies, well, it'd be pretty damn boring. No ferrets, for one thing.

Honestly answering this one. I seriously don't think sl is going to be their answer. I know what you mean. I was really trying to understand WHY anyone would want to be a child again. But, I really believe anyone who does, needs to speak to a therapist or a counsellor. It's a serious issue and we can't help them here BECAUSE it's a REAL issue that will impact their interactions with REAL WORLD people and relationships.

And if their childhood were so awful why try and go for another turn on the roundabout? I hated boarding school but that doesnt mean I wanna go back. I hated being an alcoholic but that doesnt mean I wanna try it again.

Well Jig sweetness this same logic could be applied to anybody who chooses to do anything that is not as boring and ordinary as looking and acting exactly the same way that they do all the time in real life... which would beg the question: Why play SL?

I think it's way to easy to claim that people who (INSERT IMAGINARY ACTIVITY HERE) have mental issues.

Understood. But why can't you have a sense of wonder as an adult? I had a sense of wonder when I saw the Pyramids at Giza. I was adult. I had a sense of wonder when I saw Rio de Janeiro. Adult again.

In terms of sl - can we really have a sense of wonder of what is - in effect - pixil pictures?

Children dont have the monopoly on a sense of wonder.

I think you're just going to have to accept that some people find it easier to access that through use of a child avi. I don't "get it" myself, but then there are plenty of people who don't "get" why I like to read books in SL, or dance by myself, or whatever . . .

But you are Dakota. You are a child. I can't "like" you. I dont want to interact with child avs in sl. An adult who plays at being a child worries me because I see some sadness there (whether that is true or not).

Sadness because you don't like me. :(

But that's okay - I still think you're cool. Sort of. Anyway, you don't have to like everybody in the world, so that's fine.

God, you guys! I gotta get going here! I think one of the weird ones is wanting to be a child - I dunno - it's so Peter Pan Syndrome. It just gets me.

*smiles* All I can say is, try it. Have some fun with it.

This is my attitude with everything in SL. If I don't understand the appeal of something, I try it. And often, I LEARN why people find it appealing ... by doing it.

The beauty of SL is that there is absolutely no downside to trying something that, in RL, is impossible or distasteful.

I do - DO - like you! I am sad I CAN'T like you. That is the conflict I have with child avs. You are cool - but you are a kid. It's just too too bad. I think you are really funny and kind. You really are. But ... I cant cross the mental bridge ... I'm just a human.

There are. There are kid "quad" (actual animals), and kid "anthro" avies. And no, they aren't tinies! *laughs*

There's people who start with hyper-cute avs like this one and make them "cubs":

I just play 'em short and cute and keep my eyes out for aliens.

Okay now I gotta go - I really do - this is very interesting and I wish we were in a Yorkville cafe in Toronto right now or at The Compleat Angler in Bimini. But I gotta work. Please pile it on me if I have said anything wrong here.
But Dakota - I DO like you.

Okay, I have a sealskin coat. What's the big deal? LOL, I love my coat but I hate sealing. I am so conflicted.

Why is an illusion. Do or do not. There is no why.

(my apologies to Lucas for the misquote. :p )

This song speaks to me, regarding "kid" avatars.

I haven't done it yet, but I think it would be a blast to hop on your new two-wheeler, plastic badge all shiny on your chest, and ride around the neighborhood shootin' bad guys. You know. For old time's sake. :)

"Cubs" are a baseball team from Chicago. "Bears" are the football team.

And no, I do NOT have a pair of shorts hanging from a wire in the Compleat Angler, but at least two of my friends do.

Never seen pictures of cute little seal cubs being clubbed to death?

It's a REALLY complex issue, involving everything from animal rights to the preservation of first nations heritage. It's a subject I usually avoid like the plague.
