Good post. FWIW, I am usually pretty quiet in stores. oftentimes just flying about, seeing what's there, and heading out. I'm not one for RPing in what I view as non-RP spaces.

You know Mari, I hope you know that I'm not referring to you (or Cody, where's he been?) in my posts. I've gotten to know you both a bit and don't find either you the least bit annoying. :D

I think Desmond scares the hell out of me more with his fruit interpretation than any child av ever did-

Personally I feel like meh whatever about kid avs- absolutely no concern of mine why people do what they do - I am sure someone somewhere would love to save me from myself for any one of a million reasons -thankfully so far they have failed :D

I see you didn't read all my post or can't understand it.

Also, my kid in RL is well behaved, smart and is well taken care of... So how do I have more issues?

Edit: I never said anything about them being offensive, I said they are annoying. Don't attempt to put words in my mouth.

and How do people get offended by my normal human female avatar that I am?

Don't worry, I could understand your contribution well enough. You ended with: Biased and narrow minded? Well, yes, very much so. And that is why I reacted to it.

I feel sorry for those who feel the need to play kid avatars.

Pep (Especially the ones who are 'prodigies' thereby rendering the whole rp ridiculous.)

PS See the 'Kidspeak and Customer Service' thread for a ludicrous example of the consequences.

with adults (at least over 18) mimicking pre-teen characterizations and social interaction.
Our younger over-18 residents were pre-teens only a few years ago.
So many of them will have stuck with the kind of online style they developed then, naturally.

It would be interesting to see what internet messaging looked like in the very early days of the net.

A lot of us are pretending to be something in SL.

... i dare to say that ALL of us are pretending, to some degree, even if it's just the hourglass figure / lack of belly / lack of male pattern baldness... ;)

How can pretending to be a child be of any use at all to an adult? We dont encourage that behaviour in the real world because it is against our principles of being adult, of undergoing the teen growth years, of becoming men and women. Without proper supervision, surely this is to be frowned upon. What do you think?

Yeah, well I was taking into account the types who insist that "I am in SL what I am in RL." You know, the ones M is hoping will come to SL when it becomes More Predictable (tm).

Dogs LOVE baby talk! They get off on the varying inflections/tones of your voice and it makes them look at you all cutesy as their ears move up and down and they tip their head to the side to look at you like you are crazy!

They are like forever 2 years old anyways!

How can pretending to own 100 evening gowns and 200 pairs of shoes be of any use? That would be frowned upon in RL as well.....especially in this economy.

Errr, Mickey, I currently own 85 pairs of REAL jeans ... ummm ... errr ... I am also addicted to shirts, boots, shoes and bags. Prople like me help keep the economy afloat. Okay, back to the discussion :)

Evidently you missed my point entirely.

The "Original" Discussion, which spawned this one, was on how to "Understand" respectfully.....not to Analyze and Judge and Condemn.

You missed that point as well.

I'm always missing points, Mick, that's what makes life so fascinating for me. :)
Anyway, I dont condemn - I just have opinions. That's different from condemnation.

Shhh..don't say that too loud. Not in this place where you have the largest group of rescuers-wannabes. They can't save themselves and they want to save others, save the kids, save the world.

My avatar is supposed to be sixteen. I don't advertise that fact in my profile and I don't "act" in any particular way. I don't do it for sexual reasons or for therapy.

My childhood was good. I didn't miss anything. I was popular and smart, I went to four proms... I ran for student council (didn't win), worked on the yearbook. I did everything but be a cheerleader, and I didn't want to do that.

Still, I never felt it was the "greatest time in my life" or that I wanted to stay. I couldn't wait to get out and grow up.

As far as I can tell, I'm a healthy, well-adjusted, responsible adult.

There isn't anything I need to get over or undo or heal or any of that crap. I just feel like being a kid when I come inworld.

One thing that's very different about using a teen avatar (as opposed to an adult avatar) is that I don't get hit on AT ALL. It's nice.

If someone was really using a child avi in SL as therapy, it seems to me a very poor choice. There is so much hostility and mistrust (and pity, as Pep pointed out) directed at child avatars, it seems quite the opposite of a therapeutic environment.

Still, SL is big enough that a child avatar can find places to have fun. If I end up finding out that it's just a big couch, I'm jumping off.

Well said, Julianne!

I don't understand why people look down upon anyone's choice of approach to SL, whether it be as a furry, a vampire, a child, a teen, a grandma, a dog, a cat, a crawdad...what difference does it make?

That is how someone chooses to approach and to experience and to filter the world of SL, and that is how they contribute to it. And I believe that each resident does contribute something unique to SL.
