@Emily

Certainly you are right from a standpoint of a shop/business owner. You want to make money and you want to avoid anything that may have an impact on your business.

You however misunderstood the issue here. If I look for hair or shoes or god knows what, and I am properly dressed, and I am prepared to go for this shopping trip into PG areas, I certainly will enable PG as this gives me a wider choice.

BUT. If I'm in an adult area and mood, and I'm nicely dressed in skintight latex, and I want some cool new boots or latex skin then I certainly will not enable PG. That's about being responsible, that's not to disturb people in PG areas and this will in no way disturb yours or any of the other PG businesses.

It's about choice, and a proper implementation of an adult policy. People are willing to act responsible. The technical implementation is the tool to enable them to.

I've grabbed the latest sources from SVN and built a test viewer to see what is there already and what not.

The search feature in the 3 categories [ ] PG [ ] Mature [ ] Adult is already implemented.

However one needs to enable it in the Advanced settings.

I see this as a good option that gives more choice to the user.

Missing are a protection feature that prevents one from accidentally login in a PG location like a Welcome area after a crash or sim downtime. Missing is also a feature that provides a warning if someone tries to tp from an adult into a PG area.

Boy, "toggle PG" has been in the program forever. I think as long as I have been in Second Life, at least. Surprised you didnt see it till now.

It is for the Teen grid, it forces underwear.

/me smiles...you are fast :).

Yes, I know it was there before, but now it is used to enable/disable the Mature and Adult checkboxes too.

Just checked, it does actually the same in the current viewer with the Mature checkbox in search.

yeah, it prevents you from having access to mature, that's correct. Old feature though.

It actually could be a positive feature, for child safety stuff. Sort of like NetNanny. Kinda has no use on the Main Grid.

Maybe it could have a use, in PG zones. But outside PG... doesn't.

Emilly really has a point. Those of us with mixed content biz are really under threat. Either we "clean up" to be PG, or we go fully adult and have to leave our mature sims and communities.

This whole stuff is terribly polarising and bad for the communities. I wish I wasn't witnessing it. And deep in the pit of me, I know I will walk away from Second Life before I will allow myself to be part of that kind of social dualism.

Yes, it is. I agree. We have some overlapping issues here and the comments in the Jira thread about "Disneyland" were not helpful either.

1) Content: LL will flag you automatically as adult when you sell anything that fits their key's listed. So this is nothing really related to the search feature discussed here. Better search gives the user better control and should also help store owners to avoid trouble.

2) Teleporting: This is the core of the discussion, to avoid accidentally to teleport into a place I don't want to and face possible consequences. Search in this regard means search for places and not search for content. Surely overlapping but again this goes into both directions. Someone PG certainly doesn't want to land in a sex place when looking for hair. And I don't want to land in a Welcome area when I search for Orgy ;).

If someone destroys your businesses you should blame LL and their inconsequent and incomplete implementation of an adult policy for it. Not people who try to fix loopholes and make a better and safer place for all in the end.

Quoted from http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-12977

"Please add the ability to view ONLY adult content, ONLY mature content, and Adult and Mature content. so we can view our rp, sims, the clubs, events, stores, roleplays, malls and other parcels that have only the content we want, and not have to feel forced to view "Disneyland" type content the way the Lindens want.
There are really allot of good reasons such a feature would be useful, some of which are marked in the comments section."

I completely support that, it is just so simple to implement a filtering mechanism for PG too as all the code is already in the viewer. And it would really help all of us not to possibly receive an AR (or worse) for incidentally TP'ing into a PG / teen area wearing an outfit (or worse again) that is not suitable.

Please vote for that issue!
Boy

Umm so won't the world look a bit bare without plants, walls, hair and non-BDSM furniture? :)
I believe the option to view only adult content or mostly anyway is coming soon, it is called Ursula or something similar.

In the 1.23.0 RC client, you can toggle the three ratings choices independantly, if you have your own preference for maturity ratings set to Adult, and are either paymet info on file or Aristotle Verified.

I just did an "All" search, with only "adult" checked.

The three seperate checkboxes are on all the search options other than "Showcase" and "People" and are independantly selectable in each.

Interesting note: Did a search for "BDSM" with all three checked, and with only Adult checked, and search worked. But with "Adult" unchecked, I got an error saying I was using a banned search term.

"Some terms in your search query were excluded due to content restrictions as clarified in the Community Standards."

Im at Arapaima now with RC 1.23.0.118378 Is quite good the way it works.

I like that I can set in one place where I can go and what I can find.

Edit / Preferences / General / Rating : I want to access content:
PG, Mature and Adult
PG and Mature
PG Only

So if I choose PG Only then I not able to goto any Higher rated sims. So people never have to worry about going anywhere that might makes them faint =) PG is the default so should never be a problem for anyone to do this accidentally on purpose because you have to choose to opt-in to a higher rating. Also, I have my Home set to Arapaima (At) and when I log in the 1st time because of the PG default setting then I got logged in at Shelter Infohub (PG). Now that I have changed my rating to PG+M+A then I able to go Home and log into Arapaima (A)

Also in Search if set my General Rating to PG, Mature and Adult then in Search All, I get 3 checkboxes, PG, Mature and Adult and I can search on any combination and I get different results for HAIR when I do.Just like Boy, lots of others and me wanted. What keywords end up in what categories I let others sort that out.

Just from a using point of view, I think is great =)

PS: I notice my eyelashes a whole lot darker, like lots more mascara, with my same settings but I read other place has something to with meshes so I not to worried about this, and I think more mascara is better anyways =)

That is a bug they know about and will soon fix. They screwed up the sort order of the layers when baking an avatar, and the makeup layer is now above the skin tattoos, instead of below them!

LL has already said they WILL revert that change to the skin baking order.

no idea what JIRA thread you are talking about - point me to it? I only have been commenting on the skin texture 1.23 JIRA in the last days, no disneyland there :) (edit, never mind, I found it now)

I agree in the search, that you should have the ability to filter out what you want, but the problem is that the definitions are now very vague.

what I am talking about is not PG, but the *Mature* biz, of which MOST are mature content and PG content mixed together like a cake. Have you ever tried to unbake a cake? You can't separate the eggs from the butter and flour after its beaten together and baked.

Anyway, some issues that are impacting the Mature biz.

Most sellers of hair also sell skins, the skin issue is what has a lot of us mobilised. Most sellers of hair, shoes, clothes and skin do not want to buy a whole second piece of land just to sell skin related items, or lingerie. Most women are not looking for "orgy" when out shopping for hair and skin, and are looking for a wide variety of items housed in one place to outfit their avatars. Trouble is, that the hair and skin seller now has to look at buying two sets of classifieds and land to sell what they used to be able to do under one roof in one sim.

Most land barons understand that their customers are often going to have sex on their land. So while they might be searching for "orgy furniture" in the classifieds for that kinky sexbed, they generally are dragging their purchase to their land, hidden away in some skybox.

So the issue is this:

shop owners having to decide whether to stay on their mature sims or stay on land they are renting on mature sims.

Can they afford to rate themselves adult and lose the mature business, which is arguably the *MAJORITY* of their biz?

Probably not. They will just "PG" ify their skin offerings to skate their stuff all under one mature roof. That's going to lead to polarization, and less choice for you.

Communities are threatened because land baron rentals are a sizable amount of content creators combined with a sizable amount of people who just do SL for pleasure, and drag an occasional partner to that sexbed in the sky.

So for me, it feels like LL just wants a piece of the customers we have in our communities, to make us buy their land and force us to buy more classifieds, making our costs go up, with nothing positive in return. Our choice is to become Disneyfied or to suffer Adult, or put our feet in both camps and bite the bullet, when we would prefer something more moderately inbetween, which is far more realistic of most people who enjoy SL.

I don't like polarities in choices, and that's how I feel this is going. And I dont think it's going to be profitable in the long term - which is going to impact all of us, including LL. But as always, the impact of big mistakes are usually not felt right away - they work their effect out over months or even years.

I guess I will snicker when one day there is not always "another one to buy the island".

The more I think about it, the more I see the genius of Amazon.com.

All they have is two ratings.

Porn and Everything else.

And that's why they'll be here 50 years from now...

Create a content ratings system
04-30-2009 13:18
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-4181

as I have written on the JIRA --

What we really need in SL is a content ratings system.

It is clear to many of us that a land and search rating system, though well intentioned, is not sufficient in any way. The main issue for sim owners both individual and corporate was the inability to prevent the rezzing of adult and offensive content on sims meant for general audiences only.

Some of these corporations wanted to both keep their local content in, and only allow screened content from the outside in.

It is still impossible in Second Life to truly block offensive and/or adult content before it is rezzed in inappropriate circumstances.

My general idea is as follows:

Second Life allowing avatars to move from grid to grid, and have access to a filtered inventory - according to the filters set by the sim owners.

Create an OPT IN system, allowing content creators to prescreen content into PG, M and AO ratings. This content would be available to the Main Grid as usual, and the option would be to allow this screened and rated content to flow across grids. Say PG could flow into other grids like the Teen Grid, and PG content could flow back from TG back into Main Grid.

Avatars wearing rated content can be filtered. Avs wearing unscreened/adult content will be unable to rez into a sim that bars unscreened and/or adult content.

This should be a system that content creators would have to pay a small fee for - perhaps a percentage of money from each transaction, but open to other monetization methods.

PG content should be tightly screened under this system, so that it can be bought and allowed across grids and sims without fear, especially to those educational and corporate customers who need strong controls on inflowing content.

Unscreened content should be treated as it is right now, allowed on the Mainland, but unable to be ported from grid to grid, or to sims that bar unscreened content. This is a solution that would restore some greatly needed confidence to the inventory system. It will also lower the costs of Second Life content for standalone corporate and educational customers, who will be able to choose from a competitive market of individual content creators, making Second Life a more attractive platform.

I understand it will not be easy. A big issue will be the permissions system. I believe the permissions system can be handled via the licensing of the standalone platform to customers. (that it will have to be enforced to have access to Second Life inventory services)

*groan* Why should we pay?

Standalone platforms? That connect to the main grid?

And somehow content creators are supposed to trust that the scripts that power their products will be safe in these standalone sims?

I am vary wary of that. What is to stop a standalone sim owner from copying all the scripts that come across the sim and then using them in conjunction with partners to reuse them on the main grid as a new product?

No..

I remember in 1999, I went to Everquest because my friend was a GM. Oh boy was that crazy corruption. Needless to say, he funneled EVERYTHING TO ME and i do mean EVERYTHING, even epic quest items that were not released. And everything i could i sold on Ebay! Kunark Paladin Breast Plate for $3000USD, and the list goes on. Oh, and when i got caught, ANOTHER GM did the same thing with me - for TWO YEARS!

I would trust a standalone sim about as much as i would trust a GM in a game where you can sell your treasure items for money on Ebay.
