I thought the optimized was supposed to run faster... >.< Okay, I'll go back to the normal one and give that a shot. I was using the prop pack with the opti one.

the normal one is made for older cpu's..One of my friends had gotten the optimized and was crashing a lot..they went to the normal and seem to be doing better now..
I'm not sure what is considered older cpu's these days..
I ran the optimized on the last version and had terrible rezz times and bad frames. So i figure i must be close to the older cpu crowd hehehehe

Apparently, my quad core is considered "older."

Okay, the regular Emerald is better, but doesn't come close to Snowglobe's rezzing times for speed. I realize my network sucks at the moment, because the ground is so saturated that my phone lines could almost float to the surface, but... I'm only comparing it to how Snowglobe behaves NOW, not in the past ;)

Snowglobe is in general rezzing both objects and textures in a timely enough manner, given my connection. But Emerald can take twice as long to rezz an object and three times as long to give it a texture. What can I do to "optimize" the viewer to make it faster than a snail during a freeze?

But I LOVE the Emerald's tools.. as long as I don't TP anywhere.

ya i had downloaded the new snowglobe or the latest version of it the other night as well..
i started it up but hadn't really tested it out much..i was just looking at the tools and other things it had..

if it runs even better i may use it for when i am down on the ground shopping and exploring and clubbing..where emerald i'll use for building and the extras it has..
i'm getting spoild on the double click to a spot and you are there but it would be nice to walk there too hehehehe :) the only reason i use the double click is because walking is such a pain with lag at times..so maybe the snowglobe will help ;)

Sheesh peoples really don't deserve a thing, even for free stuffs they manage to complain...

It seemed to work fine, then they broke it, but didn't warn anyone - and put in what appear to be hacking attempts at my password.

Its all fine and well to put out a beta test version and label it as such, but this came with a big red warning on my screen telling me to go get it... so I did, and ended up running around changing passwords and trying to figure out what was going on on my screen...

So yeah, I am complaining.

You put out product, free or not, that's your reputation on the line.

I figure that there is a LOT to know about this viewer, and that the people coding it don't have a lot of time to write about it, so we can help out on that end.
I notice that in preferences for Emerald, the little ? button on the upper right actually brings up a page on at least some of the tabs with 1-liners telling you what each item on the tab does (these look familiar, I think they may be from the release notes).

I'm puzzled by the LSL bridge; it seems to be too much overhead just to get online indicators in profiles ... anyone know what the full functionality of the 'bridge' is eventually going to be?

I wish they'd go back to having just the rez distance slider on the bottom right, not the windlight presets and quickset menu, bleah. Plus this version seems to me to be slower, both in rezzing and in frame speed, than the previous. I think I'll uninstall this one.

Maybe Emerald will evolve to be an excellent viewer for expert users with high-end equipment. To me, it seems like LGG is losing sight of the fact that most of us want to spend our time playing in SL, not playing with the viewer ;)

Isn't that why one would just use LL's viewer? More configurability necessarily means more complexity.

I use the Linux version, and so far have NO issues, double click tp's work, and I love the login screen where you can choose an alt from a drop down and simply click login, the enhancements are are definite move forward, this viewer is amazing, simply put.

Likewise here. In fact, the new version fixed the viewer FPS issue that had been plaguing the previous version. I am once again averaging around 30 FPS, which is nearly double the 17-20 FPS I was getting before, and the framerate is consistent again - not dropping off after a couple of hours.

aha! If those one-liners were enough, you wouldn't have asked about the bridge!

There's a lot of little stuff that you won't find without poking around, like: what do the radar icons mean? how do you get your sim on the logon page? (I'm not asking those questions, just giving examples.)

Oooh, second attachment points? Missed that one.

Was trying to figure out the built in AO system but it won't accept my notecard.
I haven't tried it yet, but as I understand it, the built-in AO is ZHAO-II based. According to a post in their forums, you have to create a folder in your inventory which contains your animations and notecard, and point the AO to that folder.

Before you detach it, go to Edit/Preferences/Emerald/Tab 1/Misc and uncheck the box for it (on the right of the dialog box).

Then you can detach it.

Oh, I think the wiki is a great idea. Even better if you can get Modular to put a link to it in their Documentation pulldown. I just thought those help tidbits might have escaped some readers' attention.

Thats right, not saving preferences at all... I turn OFF things like "remember avatar name" and the built-in AO every time, and every time I restart they're right back to full-on. Seriouosly, in terms of force-feeding me unwanted dysfunctional bells and whistles this viewer is behaving way worse than any Windows OS or Microsoft app yet.

I uninstalled the "optimized" version and tried the standard one. This is an improvement to the point where logins only fail about half the time, but it still over-rules me on the trinkets and flashy stuff.

Not sure it would work, but it has solved other preferences-related issues, so it's worth trying. Have you completely deleted the SecondLife folder in your AppData folder and restarted? This forces the viewer to completely rebuild your configuration settings. You'll have to go through and set everything all over again, but it resolves any compatibility issues between viewer brands and versions.

One note about the bridge: if you have the true online status thing enabled, it will broadcast whose profiles you are looking to any objects/attachments within chat range. Turn off true online status feature if you like to do your profile stalking on the sly =)

There's a little chart of the icons at http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/alternative-sl-clients/29293-greenlife-emerald-viewer-17.html#post790733 and I think to get your sim on the logon page, you just take some nice pictures and ask LordGregGreg or one of the other developers to put them there.

People might like to know there's the start of a wiki, with instructions and a video about the AO, at http://code.google.com/p/greenlifeemeraldviewer/wiki/AnimationOverride

ETA -- i see all this information, and more, is to be found on the wiki announced at /327/4d/345385/1.html

I also notice that every new avatar I use with the new emerald -ALWAYS- fails to login in the first try with a password error...

thank you.

I have, though, decided that IF I am willing to allow the damned thing to record all my login names, with the lack of local security THAT implies, then perhaps the other problems:

- constantly having to log on twice
- having to turn off voice each and every time I log in
- having to reset my inventory display to my liking each and every time I log in
- having to turn on my mini map and reset its position and size each and every time I log in
- having to turn off the built-in AO each and every time I log in (until i get it set up for each alt)

might be worth it in order to try all those bells and whistles...

but there is still the principle involved. We should have passed this point in software user convenience a long time ago.

I suggest to all that if you found your seat, radio, climate control, tilt wheel, and mirrors maladjusted each and every time you started your car, you might find the inconvenience a little frustrating even if it was a REALLY awesome car in every other respect.

I feel as if Emerald viewer was not broken but they fixed it until it WAS - all for the sake of some interesting fringe features. I hope those features develop into something really wonderful, but for now this viewer seems to me like a beta release at best. I will probably let my curiosity get the best of me and try it again soon. I promise not to come here and bitch about it any more though (as soon as I get done playing catch-up-and-reply).

I've started an unofficial wiki for Emerald documentation:

Is anyone else experiencing seriously long load times for textures and such?

Not I. Once I actually get logged in and get my personal space readjusted, things load rather quickly in fact. MUCH faster than Meerkat.

Yes, but then it all comes back again at the next login.

I tried manually deleting cache, user settings, and viewer settings but not this.

the question remains as to why this would be the only viewer out of 5 having difficulty, nevertheless when/if I tackle the viewer again I shall try your recommendation - thanks!

Wow.. Like you said it seems pretty quick on general stuff once you get loaded up and running, but for me getting to the login screen and TP's take a lot longer than the standard viewer, and nowhere near as fast as Meerkat. Wierd..
