Here's a question for those of you out there who should be working in offices, schools, labs, stores, corridors of power, universities, flying planes and green rooms, etc etc.
If you were allowed to have ONE more sensory function in sl, which one would you choose? and why would you pick that sense? We have sight already as an initial (and, probably, essential) ability. So pick from teh four remaining: SMELL, TASTE, TOUCH, HEARING.

At least 16 human senses have been identified, actually Pep (Some of which may or may not be relevant to SL)

We can hear sounds, hear music streams and video soundtracks, and hear voice chat, so I think one might say we already have a hearing sense implemented in SL, assuming that we can hear.

Hmmm tactile SL would be fascinating ...
The sex trade would also capitalise on this no doubt ...

we also have a 'touch' function, so we can already touch as well.

We have hearing, though some of us would just as soon not use that one, since it usually involves herating the real Player, and not a voice that fits the Avatar.
I'd say that touch, in terms of tactile feedback, would be the next most useful sensory input. Sure, it would be great to be able to feel the silky fur of my furry friends. But more importantly, tactile feedback could be a huge benefit to builders, and in a number of other ways.

Touch would be my first choice too, but *only* if it could be controlled on the client side, i.e. turned on and off or adjusted. I'd want it turned off in Damage Enabled areas, for one thing. I could also see some potential headaches on rough sim crossings. -Atashi

We have hearing already. How else do I hear a baby voice saying 'I love that tune lalalalala'?

From: Irene LeShelle Common sense ? Unfortunately, empirical data has proven that common sense is not common. I do like the idea of tactile sensations, within limits. Forget about it if somebody's shooting 300 RPG's at you for example, or when your body is bounced all over the place due to lag (go off sailing 40 meters, snap back 39 meters, just because you tried to move? I don't want to feel that, thank you!)

From: Lexi Moulliez "I offer nothing more than simple facts, plain arguments, and common sense..." Thomas Paine Quite! Now, swap every mention of England for the US, and every mention of the US for Iraq. Pep (it doesn't actually mention tea or taxes or you could swap that for oil)

wouldnt like touch, I live where we play with guns and such, so getting blown in the air would hurt and the landing would hurt what the explosion didnt lol, and I really dont want to feel all the butt spanking goin on thanks to the spank hud. The boots i slide my pixel toes into look like they really might hurt ;p. Smell would be good, there are so many places out there that smell would make them even more beautiful.

I want touch. Even in RL, I would rather lose the rest of my eyesight than lose my hearing or sense of touch. Those two senses tell me more about the world and the people around me than anything else.

I'd like to add touch, definitely. But not until we have physical avatars... I don't want to sit on a chair and feel it poking into me. ^^
And I'd like to take out a few senses. Outrage, perhaps.

A "Sale on clothes I like" sense would be nice, and perhaps even better, a "where are the shoes to match this outfit" sense.
