No my friends don't think I am a dork for playing SL, they think I am a dork for my love of Astrophysics, Quantum Mechanics, and Nanotechnology LOL. "You do that for...fun?!?"

I've given up trying to explain SL to my friends, they just don't get it.

None of my RL friends have joined or want to join SL... I once met a friend from SL in RL, we are RL friends now too... It's weird, but nice

But nope, my friends don't think I'm a dork, just that I like something they don't.

MOST of my RL friends understand me well enough to know that I'm a geek first, a nerd second and, well, somewhat dorky... but they're too polite to point that out.

A FEW of my friends, (one in particular) has no qualms about calling me a dork for being so into Second Life. But then again, I'm not trying to change his mind, his idea of online fun is anything-goes PvP (to the point it sounds like griefing to me).

Anyway. Having looked up the word in http://www.urbandictionary.com, I will proudly admit that definition #1 applies to me in spades:

"Someone who has odd interests, and is often silly at times. A dork is also someone who can be themselves and not care what anyone thinks."

That is so me.

Pretty much. My 19 y/o daughter thinks I'm weird. My 21 y/o son thinks it very cool and said my Avi was cute. He's a big gamer and is a super mega whatever in WOW. I have told a few friends, they weren't interested, but they don't like computers either.

The biggest disapointment for me has been my partner, whom I made an alt for and tried to bring into SL. I did all the Orient Island stuff for her so when she logged in she was already on the mainland. But, she never got into it. Which would be ok if she didn't make comments that show how clearly she doesn't "get" it.

She says things like, "You're going to a virtual wedding? Okaaaay hun." Or, "How do you know the Linden money you give for those charities in SL is actually going to the charity?" Or, "Riiiiiiiiiiiiight hon. That building is really something.... even if it's pretend."

*SIGH*

But a nice balance to the above is my 67 y/o RL Mom who I brought in 6 mos ago. She then brought in her 72 y/o best friend and they are having the time of their lives! The bought land together, have a uber cool house and they like to dance in the goth and metal clubs. LMAO.

I am a dork...there's nothing to think about.

I'm having fun. Something that my RL friends don't seem to be having.

WhooooHooooo! I love a good wake! Can I come? I mean...we'll miss you terribly. Apparently you can still talk to us from beyond the grave by using your Ouijakeyboard, or whatever you're working on, but in light of your demise, I declare a party in your honor! A geek party!


Oh, and I can't imagine tryind to get my Mom involved in SL. I love her and all, but how would I ever explain it to her...

AHHHHahahahahahahah... Oh, my friends think I'm a dork, don't get me wrong, but the SL addiction is probably the least of it in their eyes...

I've sent mass emails explaining the marvels of mitochondrial DNA, openly admitted to dancing around the kitchen to ABBA, and list my idols and personal influences as: Egon Spengler, Sherlock Holmes, Tom Lehrer, and Alton Brown... in roughly that order.

I'm a biotech geek. I long to justify purchasing my own microscope (my partner refuses to let me so far, fearing--correctly--the inevitable day when his morning glass of OJ turns out to be a stored batch of E Coli), and I collect really interesting equations for figuring biochemical reactions.

And... I'm a girl. ;P ...So no, my friends are not likely to disapprove of my involvement in SL. I think they view it as an acceptable form of semi-socialization for someone who is generally too absorbed by textbooks and nerdery to actually talk to other human beings. It's good for me... kind of. I actually notice when my socks don't match, these days. ^^

Does this mean that there are no pervy dorks?

I actually worked with a girl who was eager to try SL on recommendation from her Sociology Professor, but her "Wal-Mart Special" PC wouldnt even let it start.

I even gave her a video card so she could get on, but there wasnt even an AGP slot!!!

My fiancee tried SL with me. She hates it. She's more into the RP Group Chat on Yahoo.

my friends offline gave up calling me a dork a long time ago, they still occasionally roll their eyes, and give me funny looks... most of my online friends are already here, several before I arrived

I have always done PC stuff. I was the first guy to own a PC back in 1978.
I ran a BBS from my home on a 286PC with a 2400 baud modem.
I had the 3rd Internet account from my local ISP.
I currenty have five websites and run two forums, while I am moderator on a third (RL).
I just joined SL five days ago and I already have a chunk of land.

Back in 1989 there wasn't much interest in the internet, either. SL is still niche - maybe it always will be. A lot of people need structure and there just isn't any in SL. SL is a classroom full of 3rd graders at Free Play Time. Most people get that ability to do Free Play kicked out of them by the need to conform to societal norms as they grow into young adults, after which they need structure in order to make sense of the world.

Though, I have always wondered if some of the people I've sent links to or told actually ended up joining and are somewhere in SL but doing things they'd rather not share with me?
