for playing SL? I have tried to turn several people onto SL, but none have become the addict that I am. They all just make fun of me. Everyone telling me it's for people with no life. It doesn't bother me because I'm in my 30's and my friends are just razzing me, but I was just curious if anyone else catches crap for playing.

Yes.

My friends understand better than my family though. My daughter calls it "No Life".

I have told a few friends about SL and got a variety of responses, but them looking at me like I'm nuts is the most common one. I have to say that most of those friends rely on me when they have computer problems and would most likely think Pac-Man is high-tech.

However, this past Saturday night I had the oppurtunity to see an SL musician play in RL.
Between sets we were sitting at the bar talking about SL. Before long I noticed that several people at the bar were listening in. Then the bartender asked "what in the hell are you talking about". As you most likely know trying to explain SL is not that easy. Anyway, we tried our best to give them an idea of what SL was like. There must have been a dozen people hanging on our every word. I'm sure some of them thought we were full blown geeks but I'd be willing to bet that a few of them have a look for themselves.

Lastly, I've been called things that are a lot worse than dork. LOL

I've been very quiet in RL about my SL. Actually, my friends think I'm a complete dork for so many other reasons that I doubt SL would surprise them at all, but I'm certain I'd catch some grief for it. It's unfortunate, because I don't see Sl as being dorky at all, but a lot of people who haven't really experienced it, or who don't have the vision to see what it can do are awfully quick to judge.

All my friends give it a big yawn when I tell them about it. A couple of them have tried it but either didn't make it through OI or found it too difficult to manipulate afterwards. Most tend to think I'm a little crazy about it.

We get it from both sides.

The computer illiterates who never play anything more complex than Solitaire don't understand SL at all.

The dedicated computer gaming geeks think SL is a kiddieland and not worth the pixels it's made of.

We can't win. So...I guess I'll go log on and meet some friends for a good time.

Yes, Dorkette, here!!! But since everyone already knows this about me, they don't really comment if I tell them. Then again, not too many people would ever risk calling me names, (they politely wait until I'm out of earshot.) :o

I belong to a car forum with over 30,000 members. There is always between 1,000 to 2,500 people on at a time. Most of these people are in their early 20's and 30's. They are always talking about their video and pc games, and their high scores.

When I joined SL in August of 2006, I posted about it and how I thought that it would be cool to have online car meets, even including a picture of me in front of my mustang. Man was I heckled! :(

Recently I posted an updated picture of SL and was shot down again, because I must be a loser with no real life! Personally I find it hard to believe that out of all those people, nobody was interested.

LOL I BET you were heckled! hahaha You're a brave man. I'm sure some of them were interested but were too chicken to speak up, especially in a car forum.

I've never even mentioned it to my friends. SL is SL and RL is that place with loads of lag. Hey, I live in London.

All my friends are dorks, and I am the coolest of them all. I am super dork.

The few that I tell very much respect it, and are stunned and confounded and want to know HOW I've done so well.

Especially when I describe it as playing with dollies and dress-up and 'house' and building blocks and trains.

And when they invariably ask 'the question', and discover it financially pwns their RL occupations it is... well, confusing to them to say the least.

It also helps that I have done plenty of non-dorky stuff RL. Pretty hard for someone that has never left the country or done anything risky to give me any flak.

nope

the folks I have shown SL to using my laptop, were interested but not their cup of tea

they do not think I am a dork for doing this (or if they do they never indicated such)

then again they know the whole story about how I met my RL hubby via SL, and all that

(and these are ppl I met through him)

the friends I left behind never indicated that they thought I was a dork either

(shrug)

PS I am 43 if that makes a difference
my RL acquaintances range from teens to not sure (elderly I know)

my experience in SL is not one of financial gain (I WISH) but one of spiritual awakening and discovering myself and things I never knew about me

Yeah, but it has nothing to do with sl.. Now they just think I am a 'weird' dork...

Seriously.. my first sl month had my friends worried. Somehow they got the idea that I had taken up with a 19 year old and was too embarrassed to introduce her to them. They crashed my house one Friday night and turned it upside down looking for her... :)

They could not believe that a 'computer game' could suck me in so badly…

Most of my friends are not Computer worshipers, they spend enough time on them at work and don't go near them in off time, pretty much as I was before this mess, so I don't even mention it to them. One couple I know are avid gamers, but they aren't interested in SL at all. One co worker a few months back, saw the main web page up on my screen in the office, and said, "I heard about that. Isn't it some sort of cult?"

My friends have always thought I was a bit of a dork; I don't think SL has changed that much.

My son thinks it is cool that mom is on sort of an MMORPG, although to him it would be way more cool if I played WOW.

My husband spends all of his time laughing at "this strange little world I've found".
