Self fulfilling? You mean that people are sure to look at something because you expect them to? That doesn't seem right..

Because I can't back out of the island split deal without leaving the other people involved high and dry.

you asked me "why pay for tier". i said it was because it is self fulfilling. i never said anything about anyone visiting my land, expected or otherwise.

so why did you buy land, at all? i mean, in the beginning?

What is the prophecy that is self fulfilling

Well, because I hoped I'd be able to make something other people would find interesting. But as it turned out, people made it pretty clear they weren't interested in anything.

hmmm I make art in SL, usually large 1000+ prim size installations, never had to buy land, I get asked to put my art on other peoples land, maybe your mixing with the wrong people?

Thank you for reconfirming my earlier point - that SL is in desperate risk of alienating the people who pay money into it and keep the product alive, by deeming them inferior in the society.

And I don't really see myself as ever being a great artist.

that's because you don't do anything. do something, then invite people and let them decide.

we've been through this before, Yumi. you agreed with me. then you accused me of stopping you from building because we were conversing. remember?

SL doesn't do that. people do that to themselves.

Um, at least 3 or 4 people on this thread have referred to people who do not pay in US$ as being "successful". Dekka suggests that if people want your art, they'll pay for the land - so don't pay for your own land, it flags you as untalented.

If people wanted me to do things, they would be getting me to do them. And saying I should just build something random and hope is putting me back to square one after the months of work I did before.

YOU said SL deems people (who pay money) inferior. i said SL does not do that. people do that to themselves.

what has inferiority to do with success and talent and paying for land?

no one should get YOU to do anything. that is your job. but as you explained to me once a long time ago now, you do not wish to make the choice because you don't want the responsibility. you want to be able to blame someone else for your own laziness, selfishness and insecurities.

Do something that you think is cool. If you really do think it's cool, so will other people.

If you can't think of anything cool, anything in SL that would be cool for you to have, then that's a different problem, and one I can't help you with.

Well, success and talent are recognitions of superiority and so the opposite is...

There is no laziness nor selfishness; if a choice is unmade there is no motivation behind it. Oh, and I thought you were trying to be my friend...

I can't think of it, because:
a) in the situation of silence and emptiness there is no reason I'd be in SL at all, and thud no way I can even begin considering opinions in that situation;
b) because of the emptiness and the unwillingness to engage, I have to see SL in purely technical terms (it is the only way anyone has ever seen me) which limits that a lot too.

This is an interesting point. Who decides who is what? Is it the platform? Is it us?

Whose opinions matter? I'm not sure the service provider has much leverage to influence.

I guess a parallel question would be this: "Does Rupert Murdoch or Ted Turner strongly influence what we think is cool in their media empires?"

I honestly don't know. Somebody or something is sending droves of photographers to snap piccies and write articles about people with fame or success or whatever... but how did these people get there?

WoW does an excellent job of ensuring that the people respected most in the world society have paid most. The mechanisms that drive that are there by the choice of the service provider. So, yes, the service provider can influence it strongly. There would be a tradeoff, of course, but if shutdown were the alternative...

we both agreed that not making a choice is still a choice. and i am talking to you the way i always have. you like debate, so i am debating. what would you rather? me be a yes man? :eek:

but this is a different platform. this one is aimed at allowing the end user to create the world THEY want to inhabit. it is up to the end user to make their world what they have in their own imagination. it is not SL'd responsibility to influence you. they simply provide the venue. how you choose to use the tools provided is entirely up to you, the end user.

True. But on the other hand, there is a limit to how much an individual can differ from the commonly accepted point of view before they are considered delusional.

Choosing to stop choosing isn't done out of laziness or selfishness, though. And no, not a yes man, but a friend like others describe who inspired them..

Desmond was talking about to what extent LL can influence the SL society to ensure paying customers are rewarded so that they carry on paying. If they do not pay, SL sinks, so LL would have to take any action necessary to achieve this, including redefining the nature of the world. (SL has yet to succeed as a platform!)

but who cares. it is still someone else's opinion. one needs only to worry about their own.

i don't know how to inspire you, Yumi. i am a friend, not a mentor. i would never claim to be someone's mentor. and since i can't physically take your hand and control your mouse and keyboard for you, i'm not sure what else i can do.... i've invited you to build, offered to come help you, show you, do it for you... whatever you want... and you always tell me no.

i think their lame efforts with things like Bay City and Zindra are intended to do exactly that. but you have to realize SL is a corporation... run by individuals who probably don't communicate well. i agree those attempts are a fail, but t,they did at least try. and that is just my opinion.

I don't think SL would do well to count on the Walter Mitties for funding.

Because ultimately it would be a lot of work building for one person who I don't see often and who isn't interested in the subject matter but just in sympathy for me. And offering to do. It for me felt like a vote of no confidence..

The first would be nice, but what I want is the third option.. someone who actually cares about the things that exist in SL, instead of just being the same as talking to them on a talker.

I'm not sure I grasp what you're saying, Yumi.

Do you want a perfect combination of both?

Don't we all. :)

Not really - it's that I have some very good friends in SL, but we know each other so well that we can just IM. All the need to build anything or create avatars is gone because we already know what we're really like. Which sounds good except.. well, it means that if I did make anything cool, there is no-one interested.

Argent, I like the plane you sent me, but the thing is I suffer from magic show syndrome a lot. The plane is cool, but only because you made it; if I made it, I'd know every prim and exactly how the script worked and probably only see the flaws.

From: Don McLean's Vincent.. if you do not recognize this you are missing out!

Starry, starry night.
Click the button, start to fly,
Soar and touch the unreal sky,
And see below you, thoughts that people had.
It really isn't bad,
The houses tall and castles wide,
The patchwork dreamers, side-by-side,
Lie sprawling on the varigated land.

And now I understand,
What you wanted this to be;
How you suffered for this fantasy;
How you tried to set us free,
We could not follow,
could not reach that star;
That's just how people are.

Starry, starry night;
Can rising standards taint the land?
The newbies sigh and understand,
And find they have nothing to do but pay;
They solve it their own way:
The paired-off poseballs laugh at love;
They box it, hide it far above;
As that way there is always someone there.

And that is what I fear:
That this is just how it must be;
That we all must have no unity;
That only a few are free,
we cannot follow,
cannot reach that star;
That's just how people are.

For they don't think of you,
Just themselves to be free;
So be a princess, build a throne
But on your hundredth night alone,
You'll burn your crown and turn on the TV;
And I could have told you, Philip,
This world you made is changeable but people cannot be.

Starry, starry night.
Below destroying spheroid rain,
The plywood towers scream in pain,
Frustrated at the flaws we can't correct;
But what did they expect?
The broken dancers form the stage;
Pareto wipes them off the page,
And leaves them to fall if they dare object.

And while I can respect,
What you wanted this to be;
How you suffered for this fantasy.
How you tried to set us free,
We could not follow,
It was out of range;
I think we'll never change.

All I can say is the plane is *still* cool to me, and one of the things that makes it cool is that I know every part of the script and can fix it and make it work better. It's like having a sports car where I built the engine and transmission and frame and everything myself, and I have an infinite toolbox to work on it with, and an ideal workshop to work on it in.

I see the flaws, but to me they're opportunities to improve it.

So Yumi.....

When Argent was making the plane.....were you there every step of the way to encourage him, and to tell him that he had a great idea, and to support his building efforts?

Looks like he might want to do some improvements to it.....so you will be there at every step, again, to encourage him?
