Saying you're off-line should be seen as such

Back then you could be mapped by others and many people didn't like it as it brought complains. Now you can't be mapped unless you let someone do it which is an improvement.
You can also place yourself as being off-line to any other person you want. The problem with this is all they need to do is send you a message (IM) and now they know you're on-line as they'll see the IM going thru'. So what's the use?
I wish they made it that if you set yourself as being off-line to someone else then even if that person sends you an IM it would still appear to them that you're off-line since this is what you want them to think anyway. With you still getting whatever IM you was sent.
Don't you think this is better?

People can also see if you are online by looking at group info of a group where you are a member. They can also look at the map of your home sim and see if there is a green circle where you usually appear the most. There's no getting around it...if you are online, people will know it.

If someone goes to that much trouble to find out that I'm online and tries to call me on it, then they're more of a stalker, and I'd probably just take them off my friends list anyway. Adding the IM autoresponse will simply make the useful feature function as intended, and not send a totally obvious "I'M HIDING" signal. I don't use the feature specifically for this reason. What I would really like, is to be able to toggle all of them on and off at once! Thanks for pointing out the JIRA, Oryx.

Sure thing. You do know that you can select multiple people in your friends list using the usual Shift or Ctrl keys and then set permissions for those selected people, right?

Just so expectations are realistic here, even with the enhancement requested in the jira, this really doesn't go very far towards hiding one's online status, for reasons described in one of the jira comments. That isn't to say it's a bad change to make... although I have to say, I've found it kinda handy to know the person might be online to respond when IMing total strangers from their profiles. Not a big deal though.

This is one reason alts come in handy.
On the other hand, if we're trying to politely leave someone's company, can't we just excuse ourselves the same as in real life? "Whoa - look at the time! I've got a gourd decorating class in 10 minutes. . . See ya."
Like Avion says, anyone checking on you after that is stalking, or at least needs to get a life, Second or otherwise.

I asked for this feature in feature suggestions quite a while back. It's good to see that it is in JIRA. The group online and IM problems need to be addressed. I would love to have it like Yahoo Messenger. Click one box (invisible) and no one can see you online. Maybe I want to build; maybe I just want some peace and quiet. I think the privacy issue has lead to part of the alt population.

If it was serious possible to hide your online status completely, this would break a large number of products that need to know about online status. Definitely a bad idea.
If you really want to hide, use an alt, or just don't log on in the first place.

If you really want to hide, use an alt, or just don't log on in the first place. What? A large number of produts that need to know about online status? I don't understand what you're trying to say but NO ONE and NOTHING needs to know you're status on-line. NO one needs to tell anyone anything about if they're on-line or not as it's no ones business, products, people or otherwise. And people shouldn't have to get an alt or stay off-line because of this either. Why should they? They should just fix it the correct way.

I really can't see why anyone should worry about this. And yes, many products do require information on online status.
Here's the most simple example. At the front of my shop is an online status tracker for me. It means that if anyone comes into my shop, and has any questions, they can see if I'm online to give an immediate answer. I want it that way. If detection of online status in script were disabled, that tracker wouldn't work any longer.
In any case, the present situation works OK. "Hide my online status" still hides changes in your online status. Someone can find out if you are online, sure, if they really want to know. But they aren't informed every time you log on, and it's not apparent from a glance at their FL that you are online. They can only find out your status by making a specific enquiry, and frankly, if you have to hide from these people they shouldn't be on your FL in the first place.
If someone really wants no-one to be able to tell if they are online or not, period, I think that person is in the wrong game.

Oh, and remember that you can always set "busy" if you don't want to be disturbed. One friend of mine changed her "busy" message to mimic the "offline" message, which is a neat touch.

Yeah, and busy mode is great for trying to buy products, failing, and screaming at merchants about getting ripped off.

Actually, if you have gotten to the point of unchecking the box, then you probably should just remove them from your friends list. Frankly, if I feel the need to hide, I just go to my alt.. and since the alt is on Raudf's friends list and visa versa... I'll know whether it's broken or to do a password change and report!

I do think people should be able to be totally undetected online if that is their choice, no one should be forced to crate an alt to be left alone. . Personally I treat IM's like the phone, if I don't feel like answwering I don't. I think now that Sl is growing a lot of Uncle Phil's original utopian Community ideas have to be altered to accomodate the changing demographics. This isn't the little close knit community where everybody knows everyone, and are considerate of each other.

Did you know when you look in your Yahoo address book you can see the online status of everyone on your Yahoo messenger list even if they have their stealth settings set to "Offline" unless they've taken the time to hide thier online status by checking a little box in their profile page?
Just sayin'...
