A week ago last Sunday I got banned from a parcel. This is a time when I wish I could name and shame the owners; for it is the only remedy I have besides blowing off steam. Yes, the parcel is private property. Everything except Linden Land is private property in SL.

That said, this was NOT somebody's home. It was a restaurant/cafe in a Japanese speaking sim. I use a Simbolic translator which does an awful job but is better than nothing.

Until a week ago Sunday, Iyoba always found the restaurant empty except for a cat sofa, a rabbit sofa, and an otter sofa on the front lawn. The otter and bunny were fine creatures and Iyoba liked them well enough, but the black cat, SBE Kitty (stands for sweet brown eyed Kitty) soon become another of Iyoba's good kitty friends.

Well a week ago Sunday morning there were actual avatarim in the cafe. They asked Iyoba if she knew that this was Japanese sim. Of course she knew. They also asked her if she knew what [NAME WITHHELD] was. Iyoba replied that there was a very famous rabbi martyred by the Romans in the first Century C.E, but she doubted the sim was named for him. Instead, she said it was probably named for somewhere in Japan. Iyoba shares my view that naming sims for places in the real world shows zero imagination.

I then went to the bathroom in real life and when I came out, Iyoba was on the street banned. The ban lines extend up 800 m. Iyoba protested. She was hardly griefing. Yes, her Japanese is awful (machine translation) but she can't do anything about it. They offered to let Iyoba back in if she joined a group. She refused because it was a store update group and Iyoba is full up on groups. We also both figured that Iyoba would be able to get back inside after what appeared to be a private meeting was over, though I thought it strange that the avatarim didn't just ask her to leave. I was not in the bathroom that long.

By Sunday night, Iyoba learned that the ban is permanent. If you have ever heard your avatar cry, I heard Iyoba have a class one melt down. The thought of it still hurts. Last night, Iyoba learned she had been banned from the store next door to the cafe where she has been once or twice. Don't ask me why? Someone is just ban happy. Iyoba can stand outside the ban lines and cam in and look at SBE Kitty, and yse she still talks to her kitty friend through the fence.

I also made Iyoba a cat sofa (a kitty friend) of her own. His name is Goofy Boy and he is a chinchilla which is good because replacing a kitty friend is not a great idea.

I realize there is nothing I can do. Iyoba tried complaining to others on the sim to see if they knew a way to negotiate Iyoba out of the ban. I don't believe this is AR able because a restaurant may be a public accomodation but it is still private property. That said, I very much believe the cafe owners acted in bad faith. Worse yet, I doubt I will ever respond in kind even though I have the opportunity. There are Japanese stores and cafes all over Hartley and Steponyvich where I have land. Be careful whom you ban. They could some day be your neighbors.

I agree that sometimes people ban without considering the person and behind the avatar. I'm sorry this happened to you.

On another question, why are you speaking in third person half the time?

I'm getting deja-vu here. I remember reading a very similar post on this forum about someone else getting banned from a Japanese sim because they weren't Japanese. I wonder if it's the same place?

People have been banned for all kinds of silly reasons
08-18-2009 12:08
Like:

* Accidentally walked or flew into range of a security device

* Owner clicked wrong button

Dont get bent out of shape by it. If you had a friend in there, invite them to go with you to someplace else. There are 29,000 map regions to choose from, surely you can find something nice.

Consider that SL is a very big place and there are a LOT of Japanese sims. I'm sure you could find a nice new cafe for your av to call home which will have nicer people.

Apparently working on RL/SL character separation.

IMO, the vast majority of bans in SL are stupid.

My advice is to move on, find a nicer place to hangout and don't fret about it. Getting banned from some places is inevitable just because there are so many ban-happy idiots who want a sense of power. Take solace from knowing that you didn't do anything wrong and them banning you will not affect your standing with LL in anyway :)

If you want kitties, hang out at Lusk, they just released a whole new set of big cat avatars.

Okay, sorry, but the talking about your av as if she had actual feelings that were real is a bit scary. It couldn't have been something like that for the reason, could it?

Or an unnatural attachment to their "soft brown eyed" cat sofa?

Ew.

"Unnatural attachment to kitty sofa" then, I guess, was the winner. Lol

(To the OP, "Pssst you can buy one, and they're not expensive." 'cept this reeks of troll post.)

Being banned is no big deal. It gives you an excuse to see the rest of SL and meet far nicer people.

It takes a lot to get banned from my parcel. Some people ban for no reason at all. Some people go ban happy because it gives them a sense of power. Some people get banned by accident. It's not worth worrying about.

Old method vs new fashion
08-18-2009 21:09
There are several methods to chose from. The oldest is, to open a new anger-account in yourself and paying a relevant amount of anger into it. As soon you think your new anger-account is filled enough with anger and is able to bear an interest you can open your own cafe and paying out your stored anger-interests to people from that specific area of the world, means: to ban them arbitrarily too. This sort of anger-economy is able to lower your anger-storage on one side and to increase the anger-storage in anger-accounts of other people on the other side. The common vocable for that is: war.

This was old fashion.

New fashion is, to play railway-station. Open a new railway-station in yourself and declare it to an end-station. As soon a train with the information that you are banned is moving in, you stop the train in yourself and let it go rotten and rusty and worthless. (known as: getting over it)

This is called: "to let grow grass over something" - which means to let the information die in yourself. This works relatively good too and prevents to fill yourself up with too much anger-accounts which are hard to administrate - and it also prevents to fill other peoples anger-accounts. (known as: stress)

These people had no obligation to deliver something emotional or financial to you and vice versa.

it makes - so seen - not much sense to put energy into resident-resident "conflicts".

I would recommend to store anger for the hard deals (with LL, for example) - but to put too much emotions or intellectual athletic into whatever ideas or actions of other residents is mostly wasted time.

In hippie words: take it easy and with a smile.

I have an ottoman named Frank, who is actually female with bi tendencies. Although she has no eyes or any other parts, with the exception of four legs, she does compose beautiful haiku. She has been known to slum in low prim furniture stores though and does seem to have a fetish for Lazy Boy recliners. If you are interested I am sure I can arrange a meeting.

To quote my teen kids " build a bridge and get over it" there are many more places to hang out or get your own land build what you want and ban them

In a private parcel you do not have automatic rights to be there, its not required for anyone to allow you entrance.
I hope you feel better now after whining about it. But move on go to another sim and realize no one owes you entrance to their private sim.

Ask a little more of land barons and merchants, such as a written, coherent policy regarding bans. Make one of your own for your areas, and stick to it.

If you don't like the ridiculous, arbitrary nature of this sort of banning, don't support it, and back up the others.

I have a rights document posted. Nobody gets banned because "we didn't like your face" or any such nonsense ~ there has to be a very good reason. I've removed powers from volunteers in the past for being unable to keep their personal issues out of such things.

Finally, *please* don't fall into the "they did it to me so I shall retaliate" mentality ~ that just makes things worse. Class is always quietly recognised, and even if the perpetrators won't admit it, they will feel it and learn from your example. And be a bit ashamed.

Admittedly, sometimes this process is quite slow.

There was another thread, months back, about a Japanese sim discriminating against non-Japanese. This may be more of the same.

I love Japanese culture, but there is a deep distrust of the gaijin that runs through it.
