About forty-eight hours ago, I had an in character moment. We were on Hakata which is a Japanese sim when Iyoba found Kitty, the big black cat. He is an object. He is not an avatar. He has one blue eye and one black eye and the softest black coat. He does not get up and walk around. He lays there in a half lay-down hunch with front paws extended like the sphinx. He blinks, flicks his ear, and twitches his big, kitty tail. Iyoba can lie next to him or top of him. When she lies on top of him, she can caress his black, furry shoulders. Iyoba is in love with Kitty. She lavishes him with compliments. She tells him all her secrets. It does not matter that Kitty is an object, and yes I did see if I could buy Iyoba a Kitty of her own, but he is not for sale. It does not matter that Kitty can not say a word. Iyoba wants to be by Kitty's side or on his back. She is utterly and completely smitten.
I'm not sure where this is coming from or how to break the spell or even if I should. It could just wear off. I know when I went to bed last night, even though I have two wonderful real life cats whom I love, I wished I had a big, black, stuffed cat to sleep snuggled against in my own bed and thought about buying one this weekend. Part of me probably craves Kitty's warmth and presence which is why Iyoba is in love.
Something I could do besides go cold turkey or wait for all this to wear off if it ever does, is to find Kitty's owner and see if we can become friends. Finding the person behind Kitty can help make this more rational. This is not so easily done since Kitty's owner is Japanese which puts her twelve hours ahead of my time zone.
I'm also afraid of the kind of an IM or notecard I would write Kitty's creator. Iyoba couldn't love Kitty if I did not share her passion for the big, black cat. Face it, rational human beings and their avatarim are not supposed to fall in love with other peoples' creations, yet Second Life feeds an irrational side in us all.
There is also a good chance that Kitty's creator made him with a note of irony, to be ugly and a little weird. This is nothing ironic in what either Iyoba or I feel for Kitty. He is a beautiful creature. He is kind, patient, gentle, loving, an all around good friend. When Iyoba is snuggled up with Kitty, she feels safe and protected, and yes, loved back. I don't think Kitty's creator intended for this to happen, but it has.
