Hi everyone,
we are students of social anthropology and we're working on a research project concerning nettiquette in SL.
We would like to ask you, if you consciously follow certain rules or specific manners or etiquettes in SL?
We are especially interested in rules, which are not written in the terms of agreement of Linden Labs.
Thank you for your inputs!

Yes, it is common practice for researchers to pay anyone who posts to their thread the sum of 100,000 Lindens.

Oh dear.

Irie, I don't know how long you and your fellow students have actually been in SL, but I need to warn you that residents generally don't take well to people who have spent very little time in-world to discover it for themselves asking questions like the ones you ask. Have you done any actual in-world research on this? Are you interacting as much as possible, doing "field work" rather than merely coming here with a request that we do your work for you?

We longer-term residents do tend to feel a bit like lab rats sometimes, and sometimes respond accordingly. So while I appreciate your earnestness, honesty, and good intentions, I have to warn you that you will probably get a negative response here. Personally, I blame the profs, who are sending students here like so much cannon-fodder, without ever having visited it themselves.

If you have done anything like extensive field work in-world, I strongly suggest that you indicate it here now, or you will be badly flamed.

ETA: You might consider joining the SL Educators (SLED) list, and asking your questions there. They tend to be more tolerant of this sort of thing:

I've spent two years trying to figure this place out and, like Chris, wish to get paid for my hard-won knowledge for those who can't or won't do the time.

So, pony up a decent consultant fee. I will also want the name of your institution, the purpose for this research (my price doubles if it is of a commercial nature), what you plan to do with the results, and where they will be published.

Let us know if you need to find out how to contact people inworld and transfer funds to them. That advice is free and the actual purpose of this forum.

:D :D

Thanks a freakin' lot, Connolly. I was going to make money from this and there you go, giving it up for free.
Why not just yell "42" real loud and that'll really mess it up for Chris and me.

I also charge for my time if this is a genuine study. I prefer to separate my real from my sl identity but I can assure you my professional fees follow the standard accounting expectations based upon Central London, UK. I also will require a per diem.

Common Courtesies, manners, rules of etiquette should generally be followed inside and outside of virtual worlds, no different than real life.

Of course i wouldn't expect a girl hanging in a ghetto trash sex sim to be reading from Emily Post on how she should be acting however.

When in Rome, act in Roman kind, but do try to maintain some semblance of decorum when possible.

Surely SL is the same as RL and anywhere else on the web. Everyone has their own values and behaviour as all individuals. Maybe more so than RL as well due to the huge variety of cultures here.

I can't believe there are so many people who do research in SL, nearly every time I log onto these forums there is a new research thread. The thread started has always got one post and new. Surely if you wish to research SL, then you get inworld and research for yourself as opposed to take a handful of people's views that just happen to use these forums.

Personally I act the same here as anywhere else, am polite and respectful of people I meet until they behave in a way that doesn't warrent it.

Also, some residents think if you take a screenshot of their AV, you steal their soul. This leads into the debate on if Canadians have souls or not.

Chock, I agree. I act the same as anywhere else. And am poilte and respectful of people I meet. But I should warn all of you that this thread will be monitored by the prof who is teaching their course (I learnt this from a student who was here a year ago). He or she will be quizzically reading all this and wondering if they can take an early retirement.

That's the prof's fault - he/she should come here first before sending the students in as cannon fodder.

Good thing you're family, or I'd have my lawyers on to right now. Content theft . . . plagiarism . . .

That's just 'cause I've worked my way OUT of the ghetto by dint of effort and brains. And charm.

This is PURE provocation!!!!!

Unfortunately, you're right. We sold our souls to the US years ago. Now we just have branch plant souls . . . :(

(Brann, we need to form a collective of Canucks; you, me, Josh, Love, a few others . . . for self-protection if nothing else!)

Kind of a huge question.

Shouldn't a research project be a bit more detailed?

Speaking of that little ball of yarn, when is your computer arriving? And where were Syclla and Deira today?! I had to shoot the family portraits for the Christmas cards all by myself, ended up in Jig's tarty little outfit and accidentally melted the snowman. Have a look and tell me when you think the lot of you can turn up on time and all of us properly attired because there is no way today's photos can be sent to 'Uncle' Des.

Should a research project of how things work in a virtual world consist of researcher actually entering virtual world and observing how folks interact. That will tell far more than various comments made here -- especially since probably far less than 5% of the SL population knows about the forums, much less actually comes to the forums.
