Hi all,

I think that what you're trying to do is such a wonderful idea. I had a fair sized plot of land that also served as a shop, but I tried to make it as 'organic' as possible, planting trees, fountains, a nice seating area, no flashing signs etc. In the end I gave up, all around me were the most awful ugly buildings with no though in them at all. the last straw for me was the most horrible looking club was put up right next to me, bright red!!

I now just have a 512 plot, and rather than have a workshop on the ground, I've moved it skyward so it's out of sight... and on the ground I have the most wonderful weeping willow tree that I got from Straylight. I'd have a lot more trees and plants but prims allowance is a bit of a problem on such a small plot.

If there's anything I can do, please let me know

I dont know if you already heard about it, but Desmond has recently opened some new sims in the middle of the Caledon group with a lovely mountain range running through them (and more to come i believe) and my partner and i spend a wonderful morning on Sunday riding our horses over them. the views are lovely and you can see for miles without coming too close to residences, while still admiring them. This is lovely now, and will be lovelier when its fully made. I think it should be registered as an area of natural beauty,if it isnt already and nobody objects in Caledon

Good luck.. will be checking out more of the places listed here and in your list soon.

love
Imogen

I was thinking of quoting this and making some facetious remark about it being pixels here representing a 3d virtual world, but then decided it would be facile and might be considered rude so perhaps better not to.

Umm .. I *think* I just shot myself in the foot. :o

WOW! Fantastic new feedback folks! :D

Haravik, I definitely want to take a look at that script if you find it! I'll drop you an IM in-world :D

Cherry I will drop you a kiosk this morning for sure! Every little bit helps

Arikinui, I'm not sure why the page didn't load for you :( That's wierd. It seems to be working fine for me this morning, so maybe it was just a little burp in my server or something.

I would love to have all of you that have made suggestions stop by the website and put in submissions for your locations! There are 3 reasons I stopped doing submissions myself: #1 I just couldn't keep up with the size and scope of SL on my own anymore, #2 I wanted to make sure that all locations were properly represented in description and information, which I can't always discover everything in one visit, and #3 I am going to be releasing an editable version of the registry in the next week (I hope) and I need owners to have emails linked with their locations for log in purposes.

I don't think you have NCI's Ginny Gremlin park in Kuula in your list. It's about 3000m2 and features a waterfall, a small Linden bay, fountains, and places to relax. It's right next to NCI Kuula. I'm sorry but I don't have a SLURL available where I'm posting from.

A very nice project indeed! I really hope it will inspire people to do more with their land than put up the umpteenth prefab shopping mall. So there's one more kiosk in place out there, Higbee. And I'll contact you inworld later on today with a somewhat cunning plan that might help promote the project.

My post centred entirely on your use of the word 'natural' Imogen. Sorry, I get too pedantic at times for my own good!
Sorry also for not saying hi to you at the hangout last night before I had to rush off. I shall remedy that next time ... if you haven't decided to ignore/mute/AR me. :o

PS even further off topic

IT will be interesting to see how meeting people face to face (oops.. virtual face to virtual face :) ) will effect the vehemence of some posts and posters here. Like.. its easier to fire a missile from a great distance than to hit someone over the head with a rock.

Know what i mean?

Just found this thread and i think this a great idea.

I have around 47000 square meters with park/garden, with lots of romantic spots, Dont know if that would be suitable for this list. Please check out Romantic Joy in Joy Isle

To everyone,

As I have been busy on set iRL this last couple of weeks, I have gotten a little bit behind on checking out some of these places, and I am working diligently to get up the editable registry asap. I will be visiting all of the places I haven't yet gotten to when I get in-world later today. I apologize for the delay, but that's RL for ya heh. There will be some promotions in the SLPRS this week in order to facilitate some of these services a little bit better, but I mainly wanted you all to know that I haven't forgotten you in the least ;)

Also for anyone that has a location they think may fit the registry, I encourage you to to go ahead and submit your location through the website. All of the places mentiones in this thread appear to fit very nicely, and I visit each submission to confirm its validity before approving it. If for some reason the location does not fit, I will get in touch with you personally :) I won't just leave you hanging, I promise.

I am so pleased with how the registry and support has grown exponentially in the last couple of months, but it's getting more and more difficult to handle all of the bits and pieces on my own. That's part of the reason for some of the recent changes, and the items currently in progress. This thread has been immeasurably helpful and I cannot thank the folks who have helped in-world enough. Ultimately this is all going to mean bigger and better services and vast improvements on those we already offer, so my hats off to everyone that is helping to keep SL beautiful.

This is what community is all about, and I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart :)

Hello SL Community!!!

I know it has been a while since I posted in this thread, and that's because we have been busy busy busy!

For those who don't keep up with the Organization, we have rebranded ourselves into the "Virtual Parks and Recreation Service". We now have a branded URL, and we have a Google group for discussion and updates about what we're doing as an organization.

The registry entries are also 100% editable now and each location can have up to 5 pictures, for those unaware. Many more things have happened and are coming down the pike in order to make this the best service that we can provide.

I want to thank everyone who has helped in making these things possible, and I want to thank everyone who has made suggestions thus far. Please keep them coming! I will always check back on this thread for suggestions and comments that don't make it to the Google group. We still need marketing ideas and so much more, so please take a moment to check out the new website and google group :)

Web URL: http://www.virtualparksandrec.com

Google Group URL: http://groups.google.com/group/VPRS

Thanks for helping to keep our Virtual World beautiful and fun! :D

H and thanks for what you people do!
Question though: what makes a place qualify?

Is my property appropriate for this project? While the location of the LM that I give out (see sig) is on the decking out the front of my store (the only part of my build that is on or above the water surface other than the seadock), I'm building a marine park beneath it. It's currently at 4096 m2 in area (and about to expand shortly); and I've put a bit of time into terraforming and populating it with plants and critters such to make it look somewhat naturalistic, and interesting to explore.

Well Nimbus, it sounds like your place would indeed qualify, but it would be required that residents would tp in to the park itself.

We certainly understand that folks need to create and sell content in order to help afford tier and usage fees (I do so myself), but in order for the listing to be fully approved it would need to go to a non-commercial spot and have no reference to the commercial aspects in the listing.

We do recognize that some of our older locations on the registry are violating this ideal, but we are working on getting them fixed as we speak :)

To get the full list of requirements for a location, you can visit our Guidelines page:

No probs; I just mentioned that tp point for convenience. The marine park is a work-in-progress; it'd be easy enough to make a new tp point for the purposes of your project that went down to the airlock in the underwater section of my build which leads to the Great Wet Outdoors, or perhaps to build an annex to the base specifically for the purpose, with signs saying "this way to the marine park" or some such. (TPing straight into the middle of the ocean seems a bit graceless, I think.) Anyway, I'll have another look at the website and see what would need to be done. This sounds like a cool project, and I'd like to be part of it!

lol I can certainly dig that Nimbus :) Well I just want everyone to know that our guidelines are always under review. We want them to be just right, but that is always a difficult thing to achieve.

After a very difficult but eye-opening discussion and multiple discussions with group members, we are going to discuss commercialization in depth.

None of us want this group to live in a vacuum and all of us want to see it succeed to it's fullest and frankly commercialzation is a part of SL, so where do we draw the line?

A big part of the guideines being what they are was to avoid the registry just becoming another classified listing, however I think it has more to offer than the normal SL search, especially since we hope to expand into other virtual worlds.

If anyone has constructive suggestions about what types of things we should think about for the guidelines, please suggest them either here or on our google group.

Thanks everyone :)

I discovered SL parks and rec recently and did some exploring, I think it's a great service! My little garden is too small to be registered but maybe I will put one of your kiosks up. :)

I was looking into putting a Virtual Parks and Recreation Service kiosk up at the Forum Hangout, and discovered that VPRS is shutting down this month. Sadness!

Anyway, thot I'd post to let folks who have kiosks know that, according to Higbee, they will stop working soon, if they haven't already.

http://www.virtualparksandrec.com/ read the press release (PDF) in the link at the top of the page.

Many thanks to Higbee and friends for this wonderful service, which I'm sure brought joy to many since its start in 2004.

Wow.

Yes, thanks to Higbee and the many contributors to the VPRS effort.

As it happens, one didn't have far to walk from the Hangout to a kiosk: I put one on the Dallows tip of the four sim corners, near the playground end of the Cartel Hangout beach. (I also used it as a base for the Mainland maps from Carl Metropolitan.)

Maybe I'm being nostalgic for times I never knew, but it's sad to see it go. It seems to me that there's a lot of unknown and therefore under-appreciated wonder to be had in SL, particularly the Mainland, that isn't readily found by the new Search, at least not in a way that facilitates exploration.

Perhaps some organized expedition--like the fabled "walking tours" from before my time--would make such places more than just another thing we always meant to do.

ROMA is an ancient Roman themed land built by the avatar Torin Golding. Torin serves as the Prefect of the sim. The sim's Emperor is Julian Augustus. ROMA is not a reconstruction of any specific part of the ancient world. Instead, Torin decided to create unique architecture based on canonical Roman architectural forms while allowing for a great deal of reinterpretation. This created a hybrid build that is at once instantly recognizable as ancient Roman, but also fresh and absorbing. For further info on ROMA, please visit http://toringolding.blogspot.com/

Events?
10-28-2008 21:55
How about hosting some regular events? TOurs of the parks with someone who can speak on topics relating to nature and wildlife.

I am in the procss of rebuilding our space which will be a wildlife sanctuary to mirror the one I manage in RL. We did an earth day tour and preseation and we had a good turnout.

When we were geting set up I contacted the parks service to try and get affiliated and got no response so I think trying to be responsive to people goes helps too. Once no one responded I sort of just forgot there was a parks service.
