Higbee, thanks for coming by and for your insights.

Quick question, maybe I just missed this, is there a group I should join? If we have a park/wilderness owners' group, it'd be easy to communicate. Also, maybe we should get in touch with outdoors-associated groups and host some events in some of the parks?

Hide and seek, hadn't thought of that!

btw--about 70 percent of my sim is wilderness, albeit still under development. It's fantastic having that feeling of the outdoors!

Innit?

About 50% of Livingtree is woods/undeveloped, in order to preserve a natural setting. It really helps to provide a sense of space and a relaxed feeling.

I just recently moved my park and theater to Sailors Cove. 11,000 sqm of swings, cuddles, dance, beach, trees & flowers and a mountain to climb.

The Sailors Cove sims (7 of them now and more to come) are a beautiful New England style sailing community. Lots of things to explore and do including free sailboat rentals, hang gliding, parachuting, nature trails, light houses, beaches and really nice residents.

Shoot...sorry I missed these last couple posts. Klang I think we sorted out your question. Phoenix and Sweet, I think they both sound very nice. I would have to check out the places to be certain, but I don't see why not :) Go ahead and submit your locations to the website or ask the owners to do so, if they are not your places, and I will check them out!

So everyone is aware, from suggestions that have been made in the last couple of weeks, we will be making some changes to the guidelines and Activities in order to improve the listings. We will likely be moving to categories like GreenSpaces and Recreational Facilities, or something to that effect. Anymore suggestions of this time are more than welcome!

We also still need help finding new places and putting out more kiosks to spread the word, so keep em coming, please! :D And again I am still looking for some type of marketing longevity. Obviously posting in the forums and getting out kiosks helps, but what else can be done?

very cool, and kudos to you for organizing this!

when i get in-world, i will send some slurls. do you have a section for riding trails? i have a collection of landmarks for those.

and does anyone have news of the galapagos tour park? i went there yesterday and cried because it was all gone and full of condos :(

i hope the parks, wilderness, and open spaces people can get together and get some serious public awareness and fund-raising going so that things like that don't happen to all the great parks.

I'll definitely check out the SLURLS and contact the owners about submitting to the Registry. I would imagine if they have riding trails, they'll fit :)

I don't know the fate of Galapagos, but this problem is exactly the reason I am trying to make some changes and get the public involved.

overnight camping trips where stories are told, teaching newbs how to make plants, etc. What are some other types of events and community-wide happenings that we could make happen?

Dunno if this has already been posted (too lazy to read all pages of thread) but I saw that someone in the Wheelies group tells ghost stories around a campfire... not sure of the name but you could probably IM a member of The Wheelies and ask.

Hullo Higbee!
My first post in over two weeks here, back from holiday. Great to hear you're updating the guide - I have it in my picks way back from November I think and I've posted it here whenever folk ask for pretty landscapes. I shall watch developments and continue to 'spread the word' :)

have you considered a hud?
have a handful of buttons representing categories, when one clicks the button, the hud chatters some slurls into chat history (the newest or the best, or random or whatever).
the button categories could be the same ones located at the bottom of this page:

Or perhaps instead of slurls, it could just llMapDestination, to make it easy to get to in-world if a webbrowser isn't already launched.

yeah thats what i meant. not the link that launches the browser, but the one that opens the map, like the lucky chair helper does.

Welcome back, Bilbo!

Question for Mister Protagonist: would I be allowed to modify the kiosk at all? I've been tryin to find a good spot for it on the island, but it just ends up looking too bulky.

Welcome back Bilbo :D Glad to hear it!

-------------------

Oryx I will definitely look into that as we have been talking about doing some "overnight" camping with ghost stories and such. Thanks for the tip!

-------------------

A HUD!?! That's a great idea! I wish I could mess with it a little more dynamically. Making a HUD version of the kiosk for the general user would be fairly easy, but adding in the llMapDestination() and Search options will be a little more difficult. I'll put some thought into it! :D Thanks for the great ideas! Please keep them coming :)

-------------------

And to answer your question Marianne...yes you can modify the kiosk, just be sure the script stays inside it, and I would prefer the "Supporter logo and text" texture stay on it. Just helps folks to recognize it as one of our kiosks :D I will say though, any ideas for changes to the look and feel of the kiosks are also welcome! I want to make it as accessible to users and supporters as possible.

Parks in SL
09-17-2007 09:37
Hi I haven't been checking in at the forums for a few weeks so I just saw this.

I have a park in Tupi (Southern California east counties terrain) next to my gallery, with hiking trails, waterfall, lake, caves. I get about 150 unique visitors a month, I think, with maybe 40 of those repeat visitors.

And another park in Embu; Cypress Groves, that I'm trying to develop as a place for people to live, with less success (it took me a little too long to figure out that renters like M sims, not PG, LOL).

Response from my neighbors has ranged from enthusiastic to deeply hostile. I have helped and collaborated with neighbors who also like waterfalls and trees. I have been perhaps tactless from time to time with avatars who put plywood giant prims out on their land and leave them there for months.

The Art Gallery Owners group (Sasun Steinbeck) has an excellent kiosk/HUD system that Sasun updates about once a month - gallery owners send her a notecard with specific location and name information, and maybe an image (the kiosk rotates those), and art lovers use it to tour the SL galleries. There are hundreds of artists and gallery owners signed up. Something like would be good for parks. After I put my gallery on her list, interest built slowly and steadily, so I have just enough visitors there, and not so many as to stress the sim.

Excellent Ada! I will be sure to track her down and check it out :D I'll also try and find your locations in those regions to wander through! Drop by the website and put in a submission for both of them if you have the chance :)

I haven't been in-world much this last week, as I was on vacation and am now working on the editable registry databasing, but I'll be popping in tonight for a bit to do some wandering :) Can't wait!

Oh, no worries on stuff remaining - all I did was make the kiosk a bit smaller, so it fit in better. It's next to eh information sign at Livingtree.

Wow...been a while since I read this thread....so many cool places!

I'd like to suggest Archipelago Wild. Most of the sim is land with pic nic areas, waterfalls and boats (free for public use on the island), with my little store in the center of it.

(I tried to add my place through the website but the page didn't load).

In the next month I will be redoing the island to give more land for residents to just relax on with riding trails and such. SL needs more pretty places to just go and hang out with friends or on a date :)

Thanks for all of your hard work Higbee! You're doing a great service for the community.

Oops, sorry for not answering the two 'welcome back's but I guess this thread got kinda buried!
Another place for the collection for anyone who didn't catch my post in the Forum Hangout III is the sim, Mystery.
Castle, riverboat dance hall, maze, sculptures, cafe, pub, bowling alley, romantic spots, church ... still under construction but a delight to behold. I've never found a sim before I needed to examine every square inch .. magnificent!

To improve the dynamics of the site, it might be worth investigating a scripted object you can give park owners to place on their land which automatically registers it with your site so you can generate SLurls to them.

I've been doing this with a simple advertising box to give to people that use my products, so they can just drop it on their land, toss in an image and a notecard and have their location advertised automatically. Note; this is just a simple ad in my own store where it's relevant for customers to see places using my stuff, no ad farms for me!

I'll try and dig it out of my messy inventory and see how complex it would be to integrate, as it's fairly neat.

I am going to check out the new places that you have all suggested today. I would have done it last night, but I am still in process of going through everything that is already listed and making sure that it still exists. I have found that places disappearing is one of the larger issues we do not get informed about, which in turn distresses people who try to use the service and go somewhere that doesn't exist anymore. This is all very excellent help thus far, and I appreciate the response. Again any suggestions about our methodology would be helpful as well, unless you think we are doing everything that can already be done.

Hi Higbee :)

Check out Crameri and Alcis - we have gardens and beach and water with skating and wind-surfing - most of these regions are completely open to the public. Some nice bulds too, in keeping with the semi-rural area.

If it helps at all I would be more than happy to have a kiosk.

Early on I bought land in Cayuga which was next to a Park. I remember at the time feeling absolutely thrilled that someone was prepared to make a nice place in SL.

Course that died not long after I'd been persuaded by someone else's inconsiderations to move out of the area (possibly due to be next to the same person as they bought the lot and made a big mess of it!).

So yes, I am happy to help a little bit there :) Might get seen by people beyond the usual target market also.
