well if we are going to use acronyms, then might i suggest something that Datura Fairchild came up with, muvie (multi user virtual interactive environment) it can be found over in this thread scroll down about half way.

i LOVE adom... heh it is so cool. Anyone know angband?

It is in all essence as mentioned before, the Metaverse.

It is at least, the closest thing. The same language is used. There are notecards, there are avatars. It is not worldwide, public, yet...

What we WILL have in the future goes beyond the metaverse..... so.. this is our metaverse, our dark, strange, fantastic world.

I would say Virtual World - its been defines pretty consistently and seems to match up with a lot of the functionality SL has. Dr Richard Bartle, co-inventor of the original MUD, uses Virtual World almost exclusively to describe these worlds - and he is considered somewhat of an authority on the matter. He recently wrote a book 'Designing Virtual Worlds' which has a LOT of information on the subject - certainly worth a read!
