Taking liberty with the English language...

With tongue firmly in cheek and English word order rules suspended from the yardarm, I suggest: PERV (Persistent Enhanced Reality Virtual).

Maybe "virtual world" or "virtual space"? At least not a "game" :-)

I don't very much like using words such as MMORPG or MMORPAFIAOJT or MUSDIAERJMMMPAERPAERNANFEN ;-) They just make my head tired and my tongue sour *giggles*

I just call it a game.

But if you're one of the people who froths at the mouth when you hear that, parse it as "Generic Application for Multiuser Experiences".

Thanks for the link -- fun read! I remember playing Rogue when I was a wee babychild and rediscovering Nethack (fondly known as Gradewrecker by some) at uni. :D

*waxes nostalgic*

------------

In a side note, where are all the lynch mobs when I call SL a game?

Game game game... no mob yet? game game game. :D

You can refer to it as "game" all you want. but not "hey, it's just a game".

The Political significance of computer mediated communication lies in its capacity to challenge the existing political hierarchy's monopoly on powerful communications media, and perhaps thus revitalize citizen based democracy…

The vision of a citizen-designed, citizen controlled worldwide communications Network is a version of technological utopianism that could be called the vision of “the electronic agora.”

Whoa, good catch! Didn't know Howard used "agora"
to describe this first, but guess I should be surprised.

if you want to follow the traditional acroynmic template, just tack "world" on and call it a mmow.

or would that offend the people who don't have cats as pets?

okay then let's call it a mmog. we can all refer to it as a massively multiplayer online grid; and siggy can call it a mmo game. then everyone will be happy.

Betaverse
04-25-2004 17:37
I like Betaverse as well.

Sure, anyone who's read Snow Crash wants the Metaverse, really wants to be a part of it, but the truth is that SL is far, far from the Metaverse. Not to hijack the thread, but a few major differences:

- Metaverse is like the Internet, universally accessable - not privately owned like SL
- Metaverse is worldwide used, SL is still in its infancy
- Metaverse is fully immersive 3D. SL is on PC monitorss.
- Metaverse can handle a much higher amount of people than SL
- Metaverse has the bugs worked out ;)

Though many of us have Metaverse fever, I think calling SL the Metaverse would be like having a half-acre backyard and calling it the the Amazon jungle.

However, this is certainly a precursor to the eventual Metaverse. SL is a great experiment, a great community, a great game, a great leap forward from your very-restrictive MMOGames...

... in that spirit, I like Betaverse. Okay, it's still a bit presumptive to call it that, and the Beta part of it indicates its infant stage. Alphaverse may even be more accurate, but that just don't sound catchy.

One day we will have a Metaverse, and we will look back and laugh at calling SL the Metaverse... but Betaverse works. let's do it.

I won't be happy because I want MMOCA. You don't want me throwing myself on the ground in the park next to your house and kicking and screaming do you? It might frighten you and Siggy.
