What do we call This Thing Of Ours? (Or, desperately seeking alternatives to MMORPG)

Well, Second Life is not really a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (i.e., MMORPG), and it's not even a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (i.e. MMOG).
So what's the best term or acronym to describe SL?
"Online world"? "3D persistent world"? I'm not sure these come trippingly off the tongue. In trying to come up with a more evocative acronym for my SXSW talk, I called Second LIfe a MMOCA-- for Massively Multiplayer Online Creative Agora. On the plus side, that emphasizes the building/ scripting aspects of SL, and unlike MMORPG, it's pronouncable. ("Mocha"-- you know, like the frothy, chocolatey coffee drink! Yum!)
On the down side, we don't really have "players", let alone multiplayers-- we have residents. So that's not perfect either, I guess. But will it do, in a pinch?
Anyway, gimme your suggestions, for publication in NWN!

Unfortunately, it's also a euphemism for the Mafia!

I detest acronyms. I think "metaverse" is a fine category for this type of ga-- er... online environment.

I usually describe it as an "MMOE" -- Massively Multiplayer Online Environment.

From: someone Originally posted by Selador Cellardoor I've always used 'virtual world'. This is how I have started refering to Second Life also when talking to others. It truely is its own world, and that world just happens to be virtual. I'm also met with less blank stares and confused looks when I use this phrase. It seem to just click in their head what I mean.

While I idolize the term 'metaverse' I could see many reasons why not to use it. Is SL truely a metaverse anyways? Or more so, approaching a metaverse but hindered by todays technological limitations? Should metaverse be reserved for the real thing? Will we muddy the definiation of it by todays standards?
That aside, I'm going to pull one from the vault and propose 'GNORK'. This is a term several peers and I used many years ago to referer to the exact collection of concepts behind SL and SL-like envrioments. My memory is fuzzy, but I beleive it stood for something along the lines of Graphical Nexus of Ontological Rhetoric and 'K'reativity.

Gotta add my vote for simply "virtual world." Albeit, one that is definitely headed in the direction of eventually becoming a "Metaverse." Seems to click with people unfamiliar with SL. And the whole "massively multiplayer" thing always makes me think of distinct *games* like EverQuest.....which SL is definitely *not*.
