Is there any precedent for Linden Labs ever listening to any suggestions from their subscribers, at all?

OOOH, also, I hate when it does that if I sit down on something too!

OMG, they've rolled back the forums several hours. All my more recent posts of today here are gone, darn thorough ones too, and no longer appear in my posting history either. Must have been many hundreds or thousands of people's posts lost in all.
If it's all lost for good, that's pretty damn incompetent. Where is the backup data? [Update: -- Hint for those who lost lengthy postings in the forums crash: plow through the files in your browser cache, listed by date, until you find the most recent screen containing your POST data. Copy your text from the data window, then click "reply" or "quote" again on the appropriate forum message, and paste your text in again. It's a pain, yes, I could face reposting only a couple. Hopefully the forums won't crash again any time soon.] |

Hehe, I guess plain bumps are nice and honest.
![]() If they're making zero effort to bring SL camera handling out of the Stone Age, we also can make an equivalent zero effort when keeping the issue on the front page. Bump! ![]() _____________________

I mean, this comes close to gross incompetence in UI design, whereas SL likes to portray itself as the ultimate online world with extremely advanced features. Which indeed it is, except for its handling of cameras and a few other issues. It's Second Life alright ... with a Second Rate camera. _____________________

I'm beginning to think we should start submitting bug reports everytime this happens while we're playing. I think that might convice them this is not a feature we want in any way shape or form, but is a bug that causes us no amount of grief.

I've been submitting bug reports on various aspects of the camera nightmare every now and then. It hasn't been as a regular thing on principle, but only when I've been working with others (eg. in a class) and the camera idiocy hampers our ability to work efficiently. The first few dozen times one just grumbles, then the hair starts being pulled out, and then I and others shout our pain at the nearest thing to an official presence (often a hapless instructor or mentor), and then I write a heated bug report. But it doesn't help, coz they're deaf to it. _____________________

ctrl-3 then click the object you want to edit. The camera won't move. Repeat it over and over again until it sticks. |

For those who haven't gotten the word:
Philip Linden: Someone asked whether the shift in camera position on entering edit mode can be fixed. Philip Linden: The answer is yes, we have fixed it - will be in near release. Philip Linden: Agree that was a problem. |

That was the second-best piece of news I got from Philip's speech, after the news about the Linux client being projected for Q1 2005.
I wonder if their fix will go further than just the exit-from-Edit point, since undesireable camera repositioning is more widespread than that. The exit-from-Mouselook point is particularly annoying to me. I'm used to more modern 3D UIs with multiple camera modes, so I use Mouselook a lot despite no menus or editting being available. That restriction would be bad enough, but it's worsened further by the break in camera continuity when you use your mousewheel to scroll "smoothly" from 1st person to 3rd person camera mode. Well, it should be smooth, and I expect that the original designer intended it to be. It would smooth be if some hypercaffeinated programmer hadn't sprayed camera repositioning calls at that point too, totally destroying zoom continuity. I've had a pretty detailed thread on loss of camera continuity around for a while, but I won't bump it up because the fix that Philip mentioned might address the camera problem in that area too._____________________

The whole auto-move thing is handy for newbie builders. |

Far be it from me to beat a dead horse, but this one is still twitching...

Look, I don't really mind DLing a new client every 3 days, even if it is a bit excessive. But perhaps one of those new versions can include a fix to remove the edit-window-closing-camera-snap-back (possibly with a pref setting for those who are sufficiently unhinged to want the feature, but if that holds it up, leave the insane to their own devices).
Seriously, the nonsense must come to an end. No offense to whoever came up with the idea in the first place. ![]() |

I was just thinking about this today when doing some photographs in which I had to be in Edit mode due to my usage and manuevering of a Positioning Sphere.
I too, wholeheartedly agree. ![]() (Besides, if I wanted to snapback, I could always hit ESC.) _____________________
