2. Actually ... most of us on the forums do NOT use GOM (am I right here? Back me up?)

I have only used GOM to purchase $L when I was buying land, never to sell

OK I sincerly appologize to anyone I may have offended. It was not my intention to do so. I've decided to not quit this game or whatever you want to call it simply because the people are in general very friendly. My arguements go nowhere because of 3 reasons. 1 there is only a very small percentage of SL users that actually use these forums. 2 Of that small percentage most are the ones that use SL for income via GOM. And 3 because LL probably don't pay much attention to what the masses want. It's more about their pocket books which I guess I can understand. And by making the GOM sellers happy they have more land fees coming in. Only way to keep those people happy is to make the L worth more on GOM.

So I'm done. I'm sad now. I won't leave Sl though there are to many nice people for me to give it up yet.

Corey I read this and it made me sad as well as you have an ingrained perception of everything which unfortunately doesnt hold water. Im sorry Im not trying to be mean or even argumentive as that was my new years resolution.

I do understand that your suffering from this but so is every other player that depends on Stipend to survive. So whats a new player to do?

1. Seek advice from those that are making money.
Not everyone is a creative banshee and can make unique stuff to sell. Thus creative elements come into play. My grandfather told me to survive in life there is only two things a person has to sell their knowledge or their physical skills. In todays world some have both some have one and some have none.

2. Entertain, this can be done through networking and getting to know people and setting up a $1 cover charge on a persons Land. If you get 10 attendies thats 10 more lindens than you had. If they enjoy your show then you may get tips.

3. Develop a service that would be unique to have in SL and market it. IE be a Taxi Cab Driver with a Hover Craft where people can call on you to come pick them up and take them where they want to go...its the novelty that would sell on it and yes it has been done before.

These are just a few Ideas but Im sure there are manymore. The ones that you are "Labeling" being rich learned a long time ago when we dumped the 3500 a week and having to pay taxes for this system that this system was just a bridge to eventually making everyone self suffecient.

For now a Base Stipend has to exist until SL grows to Toddler stage of the Metaverse.

Right now the only"Employees" in SL are generally Club oriented except for like what I have with my placement manager and another seller has with his Sales force.

I try to look at the big picture. LL is taking a step in the right direction but like a toddler its to short and will fall on its face and get back up again when it realises the step needs to be bigger.

Yes for some established citizens its not going to hurt as much but people like me are hermits anyway and that socialization factor never really played any rolles for us except to anger us when we see a 2 week old Newb with 800 rates in Build and they haven't even come Close to what Starax or Lordfly or any of the big builders do. Still yet none of those that I have mentioned have ratings in building that amount to much. Why because they are like me they enjoy creating and not tracking down the next drama in SL.

So dont give up Corey, Just dont over think it either. Like you said there are a lot of nice people in SL. But please do understand that some of the older members have a slightly bigger finger on the whole picture as we have been here long enough to see what has transpired through various changes.

This is why I can say what I say and make an educated guess as to whats next because I have the historical knowledge to back it up.

Trust me in 3 weeks when things settle down it will be back to business as usual.

Ooh good, I like a good conspiracy theory. Is it about a feted inner core of green cheese oldbies controling Linden employees to leverage the economy so that newbies go broke?

HMMMM! Could it be the Lindenati?

Mr. Midnight prices were NOT going up!

Yes, they were.

Ok, Mr. Corey Craven... I've been in SL for over a year. I have never sold a single L$ for USD$ or any other real-world currency. Ever.

I make stuff, and usually try to give it away for free. Sometimes people pay me anyway, because they like my work.

With those disclaimers out of the way, let me explain why prices wouldn't have automatically come down again.

First, prices have been going up slowly over time. It wasn't some massive sudden spike where it would have dropped back down in a few days, prices were slowly and steadily rising because people were willing to pay more and more. Why were people willing to pay more and more, you ask? Because the amount of L$ in the world was increasing faster than it should, and people were basically getting so much that it wasn't worth as much to them.

"Hell yeah, I can afford that L$200 t-shirt! I've got money to buuuuuuuurn, baby!" was the cry of nearly everyone in SL, creator or not.

That is a bad thing. Prices were rising because shop owners saw that they could actually charge more for their products without their sales going down. -That- is why prices were rising. And you know what that's called? Inflation.

So LL had to find some way of reducing the amount of L$ in the system. First, they slowed down the amount going into it. Second, they sped up the amount coming out. In addition, they tossed in a minor side effect of making ratings actually WORTH something. That L$25 per rate is going to actually make you THINK about rating someone now, rather than just saying "Oh, it's just a single L$, I can afford to triple rate everyone in existence," which is how it was SUPPOSED to be all the time.

Triple rating someone to boost their score, rather than because you think they're really nice, look nice, and build nice is fundamentally wrong. It is going against the "rules" of the rating system. Now we just have something a bit more noticeable enforcing those rules.

So basically blake what your saying is sort of in line with what had been saying take away the tie to weekly earned income and put it so that if people want to play the rate game the money goes to funding events basically? Am I wrong in this assumption?

Yes. The Savings created alone would be staggering and surely would help fund Events, but also giving a gradual bonus to players for longevity taking into consideration also of taking out Basic Accounts and make Premium Accounts manditory after a one month Free Trial then both would begin. This would also provide incentive to retain accounts and account holders to refer new account holders to the game rather than stifling Social Events as Social Events promote enjoyment at least to alot of new account holders rather than herding them through a work line to start and once settled in, they will learn the basics of creation because they will have probably met a Partner and want to build a house and then even a business with their Partner. This way everyone wins.

Just one more note:

Hurting the economy: not

Major Inflation : not

Closed Economy: Not... Just talk to the successful lobbyist the Money Exchangers and you too will see we do not have a closed economy. Why right now, the Money Exchangers are getting fat rich off the higher exchange rates caused by this action from the Lindens.

Well said. Anyone who disagrees is nothing more than a Money Exchanger, or an apologist for them. Either way, thier opinion does not count.

wow and people like you must obviously be close-minded and ignorant or perhaps a genius since you know how every single player in the game conducts their business.

everyones opinions count no matter how off the wall they are.... saying someones opinion doesn't count because they are in direct contradiction to what you believe to be true is utter crap and totally ignorant.

Earning Cash due to # of ratings points is purly unfair as the onlything it reflects in some cases is they are good clubbers or beggars. Points brought up time and again about people with high rates is some of them have no clue what a texture or a script or a prim is for that matter but they got rated tops in all fields. Which unfortunately can still happen now even with the higher cost because those people can still afford to pay people to keep their rates up.

How is this as you so succinctly put it "Welfair" if you yourself say Earning cash by doing a "Good job"? Ie Good Clubber/begger.. You,"Earn cash" by being a "Good scripter/builder" That means A. you like what you do and B. you put in the time required to do a good job..Ok. I'm not bashing you for this.. I recently was opposed to this and have since changed my toon..I got off my "Lazy clubbing behind" and actually made somthing i'm proud of and will soon place on the market to sink or swim at the whim of the consumer..Now In my own defense My next statement was in the spirit of giving over the holidays and I would like you to keep that im mind as I was in one spot for way to short of a time to reap many rewards for my actions. Over the Holiday two day blowout (X-mas eve/day) I gave out approximately 1150 total rates. Mostly at clubs but also just randomly to builds, passers by, clothing designers and the whatnot. To say it was welfare is ludicrous. Even at "Events" there are usually only 20-40 some odd people anyways. Add in latency, movement,my crappy pc, fatigue from RL and some other odd variables and that turns into a rather substancial investment of Time, energy and Lindens. Ie:work. Now in defense of you and your valid opinion on "Rate parties" Well? what can i say? I have not actually been to one so therefore my opinion of one would be based on hearsay and conjecture. I do however admit that I Amy Faddoul did and for sometime most likely will glean a portion my income from my rating bonuses and the odd club contest. Because Lindens aside. many of the ones I choose to go to are in my opinion..Entertaining things to do..And I will compete in contests because I am a competitive person and well to be honest. I dont see to many of you super builders/uberscripters making anything to replace them. I have some ideas and the beginings of some projects and once I learn how, That may change..(Can we say Pro bowlers/dart players/Race car/t(Golf whatever)..You think 9.95ers were bad before..Now we just have a whole lotta time on our hands..I for one shall endeavour to use mine wisely. I cannot speak for others.. A bored/oppressed "Peasent"..Tends to turn into a revolutionary..Or a terrorist/griefer. lets hope it does not come to that...

And one last thing..thank you to all you "Old-Timers" who patiently and with grace did not make me feel as unwelcome as I should perhaps be.

Actually, I will respond more closely to what you said. As far as your job being cut in RL, your employer is paying you that money, not the government. There are places in SL that bring in all kinds of money through rent, dwell, and item sales, yet pay their employees just a small amount and have them submit for the support from LL for an event so that they keep more profits for themselves to cash out at GOM. God forbid that they actually spend money to make money, one of the first rules of business and pay their employees for their work. If you want to treat this like a business, claim it is job income, etc.., then everyone has to play along with that.

The free money being dumped into the economy at the levels it was happening ends up diluting the economy, so the L$ you have would be worth less and less, and prices would rise. It is hard to see beyond personal needs and fears to recognize when something, even something painful, is being done for the good of us all. I know that doesn't make it any easier to bear, but it is not without reason.

That's why I respect you, Cristiano. Your posts always are factual and make a lot of sense.

getting shareware
01-13-2005 16:49
Perhaps someone can find a way for me to get the effectual equivalent to poser, photoshop and a scanner via free shareware that ISN'T going to infect my computer with viruses or make me liable for breaking the law? People who respond to the criticism that it is a huge outlay of costs to begin building don't often enough address that argument successfully with any factual information. Usually their phrases are qualified by ...there used to be a program... or this is almost as good as... or i borrowed my neighbour's... and that just isn't strong argument I am afraid. What I am asking is does it cost more to be a builder than to host events? and yes. it does. it costs a considerable amount of real money to do it at the same level of competence as currently successful builders. If i throw $2000 of real money at this problem will I be a builder with a good income? no. i won't. that is not where my talent lies. I never will be a builder that can compete with someone who, in their professional life, is a computer programmer or architect or clothing manufacturer. What I could do (arts management is my field) is only supported now by me begging for money to do it. Am I happy. Sure! Despite all this I'm having fun. But it means that (and it is fair to acknowledge this) that one group is being privileged over another group and (as we see in society) it is the group that is from the start the most powerful and the least marginalized. I'd be happy to do an official study of this if anyone would like to pay me! (another rl skill of mine that doesn't equal bucks in sl.) hehe. *hugs generally. no one be mad please? especially not you rich powerful people i'm gonna be begging soon. hehe.) ~Persephone

It's hurting the economy of Second Life. We have a closed economy and if things were left alone we would have major inflation

As for software you can get everything you need via shareware and do the same as the people that spend hundreds.

Validity of Opinions
01-13-2005 16:51
I too believe that all opinions count. I think, however, that it is also fair to indicate personal bias where it exists. As an events organizer I declare my bias in my posts. I wish that those who made money from money trading would do the same so that we can see where they are coming from when they accuse others (non-sequitorially, btw) of being whiners. tyvm. :-*

Partial fact can be fallacy. Is it a fact? let's examine it further.
01-13-2005 16:57
Actually, most or all rl jobs are supported by the government, so in fact, you are paid by the government. If you have running plumbing, the government has provided a benefit to your employer (for which you and it pays through taxes). If your company has gotten tax cuts or breaks (and many get those breaks through state or federal incentive programs) then it has gotten a free benefit for no pay in. Therefore it has been subsidized. Therefore, even if you are working in a for-profit agency, your job may well be at least in part paid for by the government. This entirely ignores a significant section of the RL economy that is not for profit.

What? Now we have to buy virus software for you too?

These freeware programs not only are just as good as photoshop and the likes you might be surprised that a lot of the top designers in sl use this very same freeware. Gimp doesn't come with a virus either which is a plus because it sounds like you don't have a protected computer....Download Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy....both freeware virus and ad killers that come heavily armed.

You can build without spending anymore than your weekly stipend . Your statement only stands to hold you back because what you say can't be done has been done.....and by some of the most successful people in world.
