Is this REALLY the REAL WORLD Forum? What happened to the Nick Berg thread?

In the "Real World" people like Nick Berg are butchered to death by Islamic Radicals.

You can't edit or moderate that out of existence.

Where is the thread regarding the Nick Berg video?

If it was taken down, I have to say I'm happy it was. Sorry, Champie--trust me, no matter what curiosity you might have about something like that, in the end, it's something you'll regret looking at.

"The Real World" is not a mature forum, if that's any appropriate justification for why it was removed.

I'm not interested in seeing the video. I'm interested in reading peoples reactions to the video.

I'm not glad that threads about real world events are removed because some people think that our sensitivities will be provoked.

The "Real World" forum requires a log-in. Everyone who views this forum should be 18 or older, so the fact that this forum is not labeled as a mature forum should be irrelevent.

There are only two possible reactions: absolute disgust or morbid glee. The former is the default human reaction so I don't need to read them. The latter is useful only as a checklist of people whose opinions no longer matter to me so I don't need to read them.

My reaction was visciously hostile. So much so, apparently I was reported for it.

I was interested to see which liberal among us would be the first to try to defend it.

I don't see why a thread discussing this should be taken down, any more so than a thread discussing Iraqi prisoner abuse. This is an off topic forum. If it had a link to the video, then ok remove the link. Incendiary posts? Remove the posts or move the whole thing to Way Off Topic. However, don't delete the thread altogether. In situations like this, there are people who do need to discuss these type of events. It is a horrific tragedy and if we can't use an off topic forum to talk of something of this importance, what is the point? There is more to the real world than types of birds, C64 players and Bubble Bobble. It is a very scary world we are dealing with right now, and I would think as adults we could talk about it without being censored out of existence because the topic is uncomfortable.

Color me confused. Defend the beheading or defend the posting of the video?

-----

Cris, I agree with you.

He meant the defending of the beheading.

And once again censorship rears its ugly head.

Well said Cristiano. By the way, are you going to be doing regular blog articles like that on the SL Universe site?

Thank you - yes I am - I'm also trying to find some other people to contribute regularly - it's a feature I am working on for the launch of the site itself.

Champie,

What did you originally post? I am curious about the context of it.

Cristiano,

If I can recall, there were posts about how "this video was the worst thing I have ever seen."

then there was 1 post about how this was "about the 8th worst thing"

I asked what "the 8th worst" menat, and there was a reply by a different person "it means there were SEVEN other things worse"

My reply was : I dont accept such a literal and superficial interpretation of "8th worst". I stated that I believed that it was an attempt to minimize the impact of the video. I then suggested to the responder to not speak for the original poster (maybe was a little harsh). I also questioned whether or not we were now reeady to give up the dream of understanding and empathizing with our enemy.

I'll admit that my post was aggressive, but no way did it, in itself, warrant the threads removal. I did edit my post 2 times within the first few minutes, so I don't completely remember if all of that was still in the post after I was done editing.

When I came home from work I found no thread. I was dissappointed because I was interested to know if others thought similarly to me.

I don't know why the thread was deleted, but if it was because of what I said...well...

then maybe I shouldn't be here.

I was the one who responded for Siggy, about the '8th worst' thing he had ever seen. I only idi this because I know that Siggy is a cameraman for a major news network, and that as a result he has seen some horrific things. I myself have NOT seen the video, and don't intend to. My imagination paints a bad enough picture. Sorry didn't see your post on the previous thread, Champie, so I can't respond to that. But, just because this is the worst thing you have ever seen, doesn't mean that others haven't seen far worse.

Champie, you're posts were downright warm and fuzzy compared to mine. Personally I think they removed it because of the video link. If I'm wrong about that and it was removed because of anyone's posts, it was removed because of mine.

Jellin, if you gave me a hint at what you posted, I would probably remember. Help me remember what you posted, please.

And now that you mention it Devlin, you did make that suggestion! I took it as outrageous sarcasm (meaning that you were intentionally exaggerating our potential response to the video). Correct me if I was wrong.

While it was not meant to be sarcastic of what anyone else had posted, neither was it meant to be a serious post. Just wishful thinking. :)

I said (and still say) that after seeing that I have lost any feeling I had for them as a people and advocate unleashing total war on them.

Total war, not this mamby pamby playing-by-the-rules crap. Drag out the B-52's and carpet bomb them all them move in and shoot anything still twitching.

I also said I've never hated an entire group of people before, but after this, I do now. None of them desearve to be treated like people.

And other things to that effect.

Seeing how I posted it was the 8th worst thing I saw on video, and the thread was deleted before I got to see what was said - I'm more than happy to put it in context for you:

It is the 8th worst thing I have seen -- as in there are 7 other things I have seen that are worse..

To put this in context for everyone (although most people know this already) in RL I am a News Photojournalist / Video Editor for NBC. Before that I was a soldier with the Australian Army.

Across my plate any given day of the week is a wide selection of mayhem, depravity, hate , and destruction.. I get to see mankind at his absolute worst every single day of the week, 3 shows a day.

I see things on a daily basis that would make a lot of people squeemish - I see things weekly what would make people retch... Or to put it as bluntly as I can - car ejections, murder victims, and smoldering corpses in the Nevada desert are, for me, 'par for the course' ... things I see with such regularity that they no longer register a response mentally or physically.

And even still, dealing with that year in and year out over my career there are things that make me feel so sick that I have to throw up.

There are probably 10 of these... this peice of video ranks 8th on that list.

Minimalizing it? No -- and when taken in context of my first post 'I had to watch this all day long -- people be thankfull for the jobs you work' It kinda takes on a new meaning.

Siggy.
