New Island Project

I would like to start a project to assist new people coming into SL. I would need assistance from the SL community to make it work. I am starting this thread to see if any of you are interested in helping.

The basic idea is a private island that could be a base for newcomers to SL to get their bearings. It would provide free housing/land to people coming in, as well as have regularly scheduled introductory classes. I would also like to see classes that would help enable newcomers to create content so as they will not have to rely on stipends or subsidies.

The island would also have land available for the more commited instructors/helpers. Ideally some of the people who had stayed for free would decide to stay and help others, taking instructor positions. We could also have a board that gives landmarks to all of the other instructional events in SL.

It would be really easy to fill up the instructional classes if just some of you commit to just 1 or 2 classes a month here. Or perhaps volunteer for a general SL question and answer event. Maybe this could even evolve into having some of SL's finest content creators come out and give a class on their area of expertise.

I have alot of other ideas for this but first wanted to guage interest from you, the community. If it's good I'll order the sim this week and we'll get started.

Anybody wanna help some poor newbs?

If you want to donate Numkumbella, you can have it all.

Haha, the time I worry about dwell is the time I leave. Well, unless I leave for another reason sooner, which is the more likely.

Hey Schwan, I'd love to help out with an instructor position, or any other position you might need. Feel free to fire an IM my way, and I should be able to get back to you soon.

ROFL you mean does anybody want to help Schwanson make a business for himself an a steerage engine to funnel all the newbs to FIC-land and FIC-products? This is hilarious.

But at least it is unabashedly what it is -- an institutionalized FIC-land.

The problem is -- why do YOU get to have the newbie traffic flow if you can't get it on your own?

Look how one player already answered you:

Ugh, always the fake altruism! set up so that if you criticize this idea you look like an Enemy of Newbs! (Tripe of course because I spend hours of my days helping newbs without any steerage or reward.) As if there is something so tender and sacred about newbs, anyway? A fair number of them are griefers and alts LOL. And they are grownups savvy enough to have credit cards and computer training -- they're not delicate woodland creatures or children.

Are you suggesting that Linden Labs should funnel all their newbs to you??? Or are you just hoping to compete with the Linden Labs Welcome Areas by hoping you'll get some of the clueless newbs flying your way? And how will they do that? Will they get a reference from LL? Will you stand in the WA with palm cards?

Well, whatever you do, Schwanson, I'm sure you'll do it with the usual elan. More power to you. But I'm here to point out that like public transit, the welcoming of new citizens to this world should not be franchised off to FIC players, but be something handled by "the federal government" without favouring any one player.

If players themselves set up institutions to compete with the Lindens own flawed welcoming system, more power to them. But don't let them ask for Linden touts, secret recommendations and general endorsements promoting one product over another.

Schwanson,

Until Prokofy's post, I had no idea you were offering blow jobs. I am totally on board for this project now :)

Geez, Cristiano, you're quick. I took that phrase out of my post after re-reading it, thinking it was a bit snarky, and in any event, the blow-job I referred to wasn't Schwanson's but TO Schwanson so Schwanson wasn't the one handing them out LOL.

Definately sheep. After all, they are the ones who keep me company while I am in my ficky-tekkie-wiki dungeon lab, in the dead of night, crafting abominations unfit for the eyes of Tringo players... they just don't understand that simply gazing upon such wonders would render them invalid.

:D

There are already player-organized groups in SL set up to help noobs. And there will always be room for more. Considering that most new players to SL find people to help them totally by accident (whoever happens to be at the welcome area), I think each group will contribute to the larger good, and each group is needed.

LL doesn't officially endorse any of them, by the way, and I see no reason they would start now just because Schwanson is getting his benevolency on. I'd save the favoritism freakout post for something a little more firmly rooted in the realm of possibility, Prok.

This is a great idea.

I'd like to see very important additions by LL to support this:

1. You can set the initial welcome area to people who you refer
2. You can automatically put people in a group who you refer
