Disturbing encounter in SL with racism and threats

I don't mean to dredge this up again, but I live in Florida, and locally, 22 hispanic males over the last few months have been attacked as they work as day laborers...

Not really into stirring up the shit stew but if certain offenders in RL must register with local law enforcement, and this individual is allowed to infect our mostly beautiful and peaceful existance here in SL without retribution from the Lindens, see nothing wrong with Power to the People, sound familiar?) you publicly notifying the rest of us so that we may avoid such an ignorant individual!!!!

I also believe in fair representation and apparently said individual has made no attempt to defend or even dispute these claims against them. Don't we have a negative rating system? We Pos those we like and let others know of thier exploit, should the Neg work the same way?

All kindsa shit bout trademarks, copyrights and such which pale in comparision, and I'm extremely dissapointed the Lindens apparently have not addressed this issue to the satifaction of it's "law abiding" and respectful citizen.

I don't think they would really like to read of such incidents in USA Today, get the drift?!!!

Well it seems that calling someone a nigger and a spic and threatening them is not a particularly serious offense in LL's eyes. I received the note about a week ago that they had investigated, if they found anything they would take action, blah blah. Since then, daily, that person has still been in SL and is there right now as I post this. I'm just so thrilled that LL is so lenient about their own policies.

Oh, as an added note, from an IM speaking with another friend in SL who is from Venezuela, about an experience she just had this morning - I removed her name:

Friend: we were in the newbie area chatting and some chic kept asking us to take it to IM because this was an *american game*
Friend: and since I ignored her, she just felt compelled to stand right next to me and say me and my tequila should go back to mexico

This is absolutely unnacceptable. I have so had it. How is it that the Lindens can run around locking extremely less severe forum threads everyday, but this person isnt booted within 5 minutes of the incident? Again, absolutely unnacceptable.

Well Cris i know someone who had the same problem.

It seems the ban only works at a certain level.

But you can solve that problem by buying on of those robots to guard your land..just add his name to the enemy list and the robot won't allow him to come near your land or he gets a major rocket shot up his ass.

(and believe me the robots never miss their targets...cause i've seen Leyla's Fat Cat Robot in action)

They start making noices when the target is near..and then they start to shoot at the target.

And there is NO WAY they can get passed the robot.

Unfortunately we can't use those bots in the welcome area, so we have to be tolerant of the racist assclowns that LL won't remove.

I guess what surprises me the most is they did nothing once again. It is really disappointing that they seem to take censoring threads more seriously.

I think it's time for another Ahern protest.

It's starting to almost mirror RL.

Many moons ago there was a blatant anti semitic build in Blue that I reported. The builder/creator removed it and that was as far as it went. That person is still here today with a very public profile, but seems to have put the bigotry back in the closet. I know the truth.

Yes, I agree. I, for one, would like to see some kind of public statement as to why the Lindens seem to be prepared to tolerate this kind of unacceptable behaviour (illegal in my country) which seems to have forced at least one valued resident out of second life.

Cris, I totally understand how you feel. You think that you would get used to it by now, but then sometimes it happens when you least expect it and it catches you off guard and it unnerves you. Most of the time, I am a fighter and I will speak up, but there are times when it makes me so sad that I feel like there is no use in saying anything. What makes me even sadder is when people deny what has happened because they have not experienced it themselves and even worse, suggest that you are a whiny oversensitive minority. People tend to deny other people's realities because it doesn't mirror their own and that really saddens me. What does it cost for you to suspend your judgement, give people the benefit of the doubt and believe? I am not being very articulate. I just don't have the energy. I am in one of those "I feel jaded" moods.

i was thinking, maybe LL gives people a few chances before banning them, just as they would for any other type of abusive behaviour. so perhaps this guy recieved a strict warning and is playing nice ever since. fortunately for us we are aware of his true character and know not to invest anytime at all in forming an acquantence or friendship.

i think bigotry is way worse than mistaking a non racial issue as one. that's a standard problem that and racial or ethnic minority faces, trying to determine if they have been discriminated against or not. if your name or skin colour give away your otherness immediately, you basically live your entire life under the threat of bigotry.

Agreed - it is a simple, excellent example of how that type of hatred escalates. With a few exceptions, most people seem to realize the seriousness of not speaking out against this and just turning a blind eye to it. Your post illustrates the best of all of them here why the argument that it is silly and doesn't matter will just result in history repeating itself over and over.
