Disturbing encounter in SL with racism and threats

After nearly 2 years in SL, I have seen a lot of things, and even had a few run ins with someone here or there (love you, BJ ). However, I have to admit my experience tonight unnerved me more than a little bit. I won't post the names and have already abuse reported this, but I had the following happen to me...

I went out to Inari to build for a little while, and I noticed someone on my land. As anyone with any large amount of land knows, it is a pain to keep up with all the stuff people leave on your land, and I don't like auto return because it can have disastrous results. I noticed someone way at the top of a skyscraper I have there, so I flew to the top. There was someone on top of it, doing a fairly elaborate build. I asked if I could help them, and they said no they were fine. I then asked why they were building there, and they called me a dick, then an asshole with an attitude problem, and that if I did not want him to build there too bad.

I then eject him from my land, but as you know the ban does not work above a certain height, so he comes right back and calls me a pussy. Fine, been there, done that before (again, love you BJ). I eject him from my land again and teleport home because I don't feel like dealing with him. Typical encounter.

A few minutes later, I got an IM from him saying "I live in Florida too, maybe I will come and see you and then you call talk shit to me". Fine, again, still par for the course, as I received the same threat from you know who. He then called me a nigger. When I pointed out that I was not black, he then called me a spic. He followed that up with telling me that it was the same thing anyway, that we both desecrate this nation, and that I should speak fucking English. When I pointed out that I was speaking better english than he was, he told me I should tell him what area I live in so he can come to see me. He then told me to run to the Lindens and report him, because that's what monkey niggers do.

Yes, I abuse reported the whole thing, that is not why I posted. It just makes me really sad that in 2004, that racism is still rampant. I now fully understand how horrible Kasandra Morgan felt being called a nigger, and Paolo Portocarrero being told his opinion did not matter because he was a fag. It is quite a slap in the face in SL to have such an ugly part of RL spill over here. Add in threats, however idle, and it leaves you feeling pretty shaken. It is actually only the second time I have been called a spic in my life, and I suppose coming from this idiot it is a compliment, but I can't help but wonder how many other people go through the same thing in SL and in RL.

You'd think someone in SL would have some courtesy. I know for one, that I, would never do that. If someone asked me to leave, I would simply select the whole thing, take it, then leave. But, I guess you have the choice few who are just downright jackasses, and don't have any respect for human dignity.

Cris, that is such an ugly encounter! I can only assume that LL will ban this creature. I agree - it is extremely sad. but then I am saddened and negatively amazed by alot that I see in this world of late. Sorry you had it in your face in SL - our little sanctuary.

I have noticed that Racism has increased since the Republicans have come to power.

Whoever it was thrives on reaction. Chris's post probably just got this guy all giddy with excitement.

Abuse report these people and mute them out of existence. LL will obviously ban their IP address out of existence. There are far far more worthwhile things to be thinking or talking about.

No, what I am talking about is an experience that was quite upsetting to me. Racism has a way of demeaning that can be quite unnerving. If I wanted to glorify him or validate him, I would have posted his name. I am sorry you don't feel it a valid topic, but I don't care. I am glad you think this is fun.

Actually .. I take that back. If you really want to do something about this, supeona his ass via the CC records that LindenLabs keep. You've got a pretty clear cut case here.

If I felt a sense of actual physical harm, I would take that kind of a step. If you think people do not go so far as to hurt or kill someone from an online game, there are plenty of examples to show that it does occur. In this case, I don't think the man could find his own dick to take a piss, but one never knows. I took precautions the last time this happened to remove my address and phone info from SLUniverse.com to be on the safe side.

I honestly wish the whole thing hadn't upset me, as it sucks to admit that he got to me. They always say words have no power unless you let someone have the power, right? I can take being called an asshole, a dick, whatever other lame things someone can come up with and be unphased (and in the case of certain people, flattered). At first I had no real reaction to it other than simply being annoyed. However, as I sat there, I found myself both really angry and surprisingly upset. I recognize you don't think any of that is valid, Blaze, but I posted because others have gone through it (and yet amazingly in one case the very person who repeatedly called someone a nigger and garbage is still in SL), and I am sure many haven't said anything about it, but others have before and will again. You may think it is ok to just let it pass in silence, I don't. I also don't have great faith in abuse reports.

LOL, since the republicans came into power? That's great lol. It never ceases to amaze me at what gets blamed on republicans. Anyways, that's besides the point. I just want to say I'm very sorry this happened to you. I'm quite the mix in RL, Italian/French/English lol. My whole life I've had people ask me "what are you?". I thought that would change when I got older because kids are kids. It actually got worse as an adult lol. When people ask me that I just say "I'm an American". Racism is rampant in the world today but it's not just one or two groups. You can look forward to being harrassed for so many reasons, be it that you're gay, black, asian, hispanic, "other"which I qualify for), overweight, underweight, poor, not attractive enough, too attractive, religious, etc. The list goes on for miles. I could even include white in that list. I've seen it with my own eyes many times unfortunately. One would hope we could avoid this behavior in SL but these are real people and now and then it's bound to happen. Hopefully this person will be delt with and that's at least one less idiot in SL .

While I certainly think intolerance has been rampant in the past 4 years on a lot of fronts, this has nothing to do with politics.

I cannot believe the stupidity of some people. I wish I had been around because I would have had a few choice words myself. Coming from a multi-cutural AND racist background, I know all too well what happens to each side. For someone to live with such hatred in their hearts is such a sad thing to witness. But they cease to be pittied by me when they turn their hatred onto others. I hope the Lindens take this seriously and we never have to see this person again in SL. PS: Magnum, that sort of blanket statement makes you *almost* no better than the person who did this to Cris. Remember to judge the individual, not an entire group based on their beliefs

PPS: Blaze, your lack of sympathy in this situation certainly caused you to raise some red flags in my eyes. I am sorry you cannot see the severity of this situation, nor understand the need for someone to share it with their friends and community. I seriously hope nothing drastic happens to you, but if it does, remember this incedent and ponder why some may hold no sympathy for you.

Thats the only part that sounds fishy to me here. I mean without posting logs of what was really said I imagine the exchange and circumstance was probably alot different than just that.

First assumtion I would have is the guy didn't know he was building on your land.
Second would be you pissed him off royally when you kicked him and whatever he was building was lost or he thought so anyway.

I think you pissed on a hornets nest probably. In any case though if the guy went so overboard as to threaten your RL person and make racial slurs he's probably gonna be looking at a fairly long suspension if not a ban.

This really sucks, Ano. Grrrrrr. Anyhoo, privacy couldn't protect anyone so openly blatant and threateningly racist in SL -- or the real world, for that matter. The heart comes out and the true ugly nature of a "person" spills out over time.

This angers me. What compounds it for me, and really gets to me, Cris, is that you were being helpful and kindly on your own land... and to be told off with generic, nondescript insults is one thing, but this is another.

Actually, perceived control of the police power of the state does give a signal to folks to act out on their impulses if the people in power agree with them.
