Disturbing encounter in SL with racism and threats

Yeah, Foster, I brought it on myself, what was I thinking? I certainly deserved to be called a nigger and a spic. You know nothing at all about the situation, so whether you think it is "fishy" or not does not matter to me in the slightest.

For the record, I said two things to him before he called me an asshole and a dick. I asked if I could help him, and why he was building on top of my building. After being called a dick and an asshole for asking why he was building on top of my building (my exact phrase), I then ejected and banned him. He called me a pussy after being banned. Nice theory though.

I hate to do a "me too" reply, but Cris I just wanted to say that I think you're great and an asset to our community and I am so so sorry that you had to deal with a moron like that. I sure hope LL bans this person and any alt or main acounts associated with that address or credit card number (since obviously this person seemed to know more aobut you than some random newbie would).

Thank you, Tina. I am not sure he did actually know me - the fact that I live in Florida is in my profile, so he may have just looked at that, and based his racial slurs on my avatar. He isn't a newbie, the account is a few months old. Nonetheless, I do hope something is done about it, though it seems in the past hate speech has been met with suspensions but not bans.

As much as I dislike you, I would not wish you being called a nigger or a spic (or whatever racial slur applies to you) for anything, or make light of it. For you to do so shows that you have the sensitivity of a rock, but that is not particularly shocking.

I don't. I bet Cris said exactly that: "Um..can I help you?" and the person escalated it from there. I've found Cris to be a very straighforward and forthright..yet polite guy. I can't imagine that he 'started it'.

And even if he DID..(which he didn't)..the racial slurs back were beyond the pale. I would hope if Linden's don't show Zero Tolerance for this, that the rest of the SL community will.

Catherine was offering support, please don't misread her post and attack her unfairly.She isn't minimizing the effect, she is trying to encourage me to not let some idiot's words hurt or affect me, and in the end she's right. We give each other way too much power. My reaction surprised even me, because honestly most of the time I just shrug it off and recognize that the other person has to go through life being who they are. I'm not bitter, Pendari. I just have a problem with self indulgent blowhards who start threads saying "someone called me a doodyhead in game but I'm not gonna tell you who, oh and BigJohn is an asshole".

Good thing we've only got one who is so self absorbed that he thinks his few minutes interaction with some unnamed doofus is newsworthy and should garner him oodles of sympathy. Incidentally, I had deleted the post for fear that people would misread it; alas, Christano quoted it before I did.

Racism is bad, but it is merely one way that humans have of being jerky; and there's certainly enough of that to go around. In my opinion playing the race card as the original poster did only amplifies our natural tendency toward xenophobia. Following that line, Christano did nothing but fan the flames of racism because his indignancy was aroused.

And I do have to say, that the world being as it is, if Christano lives in Miami and is going to get so flustered about being called a spic, then he is a bit of a nancy boy.

I suggest that if anyone says the word "spic" in Miami, they won't say it more than once. You are more likely to hear it in Seminole County or Gainsville, which are chock full of ignorant cracker white trash hillbillies. Anytime that anyone uses Second Life to do some loathesome thing that they are too cowardly to do in person, they ought to be called on it.
I'm sure that seeing the word "nigger" typed out on a screen hurts just as much as hearing it yelled out the window of a passing truck.

I wonder if you're just slow or have a reading / comprehension problem. Do you really think the epithets *doodyhead* and *spic* are in the same category? Do a racial slur and a moniker have the same meaning to you? Do you really take racism so lightly? Or are you so dense that you can't separate the poster from the topic?

It had nothing to do with semantics. Malachi's statement that I should not be offended by being called a spic (and nigger and a monkey, by proxy) is no different than him telling a black person from Detroit or Atlanta that they should not be offended by nigger, or that being offended by it makes them a sissy. Apparently where you are from determines whether or not you should be offended. In fact, he went so far to use a slur against gay people to make his point even better. At least he is offensive across the board.
