Wow I cannot believe I am weighing in on the FIC. I have avoided it, but after reading Prok's first post I understand.
I have always maintained that humans establish their social pecking order in High School. Every organization from religion to library boards functions just like high school. There are the in crowds, the out crowds, the wanna be in crowds, and the loners who just do what ever. Sometimes the incrowd is the cheerleaders and jocks, sometimes its the drama geeks and the jazz band. People can't help them selves it seems, they defaultt to high school in group socialization.
Prok's slam book analogy is well taken, the recent shunning on the boards could have been right out of the movie "Mean Girls."
So yes there is an FIC. There is always an FIC. They are the "Cool Kids." The ones who sit at a lunch table and hold court with other cool kids, surrounded by the Kids who want to be cool, who want to accepted, and fawn. In FIC the cool kids aren't necessaruly the cheerleaders and Jocks (as they were in my HS) they are the builders, the scripters, the designers who influence SL. They are the arbitrators of what is hot, and what is not. Largely I would expect they are like, most of us, misfits from their local environment whoi have found a new way to be cool. I suspect they would not want to be pidgeonholed, so thats why there is vehemence whenever FIC is brought up. But hey, I saw bring it on and clueless, and the stuck up elitist cheerleader types felt they were doing the fawning masses a FAVOR by showing them what cool is. Like people should feel luckm and honored they speak to them. But if you call them on being a bitch, they will deny it and talk about thier habitat for humanity volunteer work they did for the college accpetance process.
Most people are Fawning Masses. We admire the cool kids, like hanging out with the cool kids, and enjoy those moments when we feel cool. We are starstruck, copying but not leading, always telling out freinds about the time we had coffee in the same starbucks as Brad Pitt. The danger of the Fawning Masses is that in their worship of the FIC, the develop a pecking order: the people who are more like the FIC shun those who are less like the FIC. In my own life Goths were outcasts, just like us punk and industrial types. We were all connected by liking similar music, and we would go to the Goth/Punk/Industrial/ batcave clubs and hang out. However, at some point Goth became acceptable and then suddenly ther ewas an influx of new people on the scene. Suddenly who was more goth than who became a matter of status. Same thing happend to the punk scene. The very people who should have known better, whose ethos despises favoritism, were suddenly playing favorites.
Prokofy is incorrect in thinking its the FIC that is the source of most of the forum Vitriol. It is the Fawning masses screaming for acceptance and not wanting to be branded less FIC than you. Since the fashion of the FIC is to deny the FIC, then the fawning masses must deny it twice as loud cause they are afraind of been lower on the "I'm more FIC than you" scale. These are the people who alienate the newbies and clamor that everone should have a job and make content or own land to get rich like the FIC.
Then there are the out crowds. They are not part of the FIC, they are often leaders iin thier own way. They have skills and ability, but somehow do not quite cross the line, eith cause they can't or won't. The thing about the out crowd this that they are aware they are the out crowd. Some of us are accepting of this, and others resent the fact that the in crowd exists at all. Prokofy is the example, par excellence of the out crowd. He challenges and attacks the FIC because he sees the damage that elitism does. He is unconcerend about how he is recieved and this angers people who feel a need to be accepted. Yet in his own way Prok is FIC, he has the skills, sets a trend, and attracts a following. Dichotomies dichotomies dichontomies.
Finally there are the lone wolfs. We just do what we want and march to our own drum, truly not giving a rats ass what everyone else thinks. We piss some off, we make others adore us. Sometimes we get sucked up inot the FIC, and other times spit out. We like Aimee Weber because the she is cool enough not to know that she is the FIC (when your picture is all over the linden website hun, you are FIC.) And we like Prok because he is right and has courage to fight even a hopless battle (also cause he is cool enough not to know he is FIC). The lone wolves just do what they want, indifferent to the goings on of everyone else either from indifference or disdain or ingnorance. Everyone would liek to have the courage to be the lone wolf, but its hard, cause you never have the security of knowing where you stand. The lone wolves are the people that everyone respects, but noone is quite ready to join.
What does any of this matter? Not much, as long as you like the person you are, and not just the person you think you are.

Good post Jake, I agree with you totally there. But I don't think anyone denies that there's a pecking order in SL, and that there are SL "celebrities" and people who could be considered on the top.
The difference between the cool kids FIC you describe and the Prokofy FIC, is that Prokofy's is much more malicious. Yours sets trends and acts high and mighty, but Prokofy's puts down people and controls the lindens, he makes numerous references to the FIC stopping him from getting billboard space, or stopping him and other newbies from getting something or other.
I think you're dead on about what you said, and whether some people realize it or not they're in one of those groups. But Prokofy's FIC is more like the illuminati (something he also references too), the Free Masons, or maybe even Big Brother.
Really his ideas just seem like a more paranoid form of what you said.

From: Prokofy Neva Coco knows me, and knows I'm not being snotty, but just truthful. There is a difference. Coco knows all too well that her public contortions about this kind of bear being "OK" and that kind of bear being "too far" can only make me pity someone who has to go through that process to get initiated -- but then, she has a genuine affinity most likely for the types like Aimee, and that's fine, she's free to do and be whatever she wants on the "blank canvas"
Because before her bearz suck-ups, or during, she was IM'ng me quite a bit trying to explain why she was doing the bearz, and struggling to explain why it wasn't really going along with the crowd or ganging up on me or anything of the kind. I do know you are just being truthful, and yes, it DID require contortions, but not because of anything I did, or any justification I am having to do of myself. I joined in on the bears when it was "Feted Inner Bear," which was cute. It was only after I had my bear made and there and saw the big-headed bear being made that I im'd you, after I went home. I wanted it clear to you that I didn't care for that aspect. You know, that seems to happen a lot around here. Something starts off as light-hearted then gets, to some degree, mean-spirited. Take, for example the thread about the imaginary poll. That I thought was something where we parody our own selves, and I parodied myself in it, but it turned out to be also full of people taking jibes at each other by parodying each other. So this isn't the first time I've taken part in something in this game I considered fun and light, only to find something being added (in this case, the big-headed bear), which is not what I signed on for in the first place. From: Prokofy Neva It means engaging in that endless 6th grade stuff of IMing all kinds of girls endlessly and saying "Hi, hon...wow, is that ever cute...I love your jeans...I love your bug decal...wow...that's sweet...buh-bye" and stuff like that endlessly all day long. It's a job, you have to have grim determination to do it, but I know Coco possesses the right amount of gritty determination, pluck, and elan to get jobs like that done and advance to the next game square. Well . . . what you get with me is actually ME. If I gush on about a bug decal, I'm doing it sincerely. If I get excited about a bear thing, it is because the bears are so adorable and the whole idea is such terrific fun. Yes, I do like to advance to the next game square, but never by being dishonest or insincere. (And I spend hardly any time in IM's.) If I tell you something, you can be sure that it is, to the best of my ability, the total honest truth as I know and feel it. From: Prokofy Neva Sometimes though, friends have trouble crossing that Rubicon of leaving you behind, and stepping into the radiant future. Then you have to help them make that transition. . .Sometimes as you step your way up to the new world, you don't have anybody to step on to get ahead, and you need to use your formerly-equal friend to do that stepping. No intention of ever doing any things of the kind. From: Prokofy Neva When Coco faces that Rubicon of deciding what is "too much" and what is "OK' on the Prok-lampooning scale, she's in trouble. She's pausing, when she needs to make the leap. Either you leap over the entire bear thing and make, I dunno, antelopes, or those kind of really freaky half-giraffe, half-Pegasus, half-I dunno creatures that Satu Moreau makes, or you stay with the bears as long as you need to collect the points for that level. No I don't need to make any leap. It's not ever required that I choose between you and them. It is only ever required that I choose between behaviors I want to be a part of and those I don't want to be a part of. The bear thing, as I explained earlier, is cute, just by itself, and also vis-a-vis the nod to the term you coined. So I did that. THEN something else goes in I don't approve of, so I say so. They know it, you know it, everybody knows it - there is nothing vague about how I feel about that inflated head bear. But that doesn't mean the rest of it isn't good and fun and cute. From: Prokofy Neva To dither over whether "a bear with an inflated head but not named Prok but named Angry Bear is OK" or "a bear with a stickpin that has a name sorta sounding like Prok but isn't goes too far" -- well, when you find that sort of thing happening, you need to grit your teeth, and make the right choice. And the choice for Coco in this situation is to hold the cloak and wait for the road to Damascas to come later -- let them stone away. Join in teh bearz frenzy, if it means dumping on me, dump away, the point is, collect as many bears as you need to beat this level and *keep on playing the game*. You and I just have different approaches. There is no need for me to grit my teeth and make the right choice and take a stand in this situation and drag my bear out of the display. I have certainly done my share of yelling and stand-taking around here about shunning and attempts to stifle free speech. One wrong bear with a pin just doesn't reach that bar for me. I can see how you would view it as either/or and/or taking a stand, but, you know, I think people can just start acting nicer, and as far as I could see, they did, by not naming it pork. That was reaching out a bit, so I reach out a bit, too. That is how progress gets made. And I am not sucking up to anybody. Sometimes I get furious at a poster and hate everything that poster ever says and wish NEVER EVER to speak to them again, but those are exceptions. They're easily avoided, really. There were one or two like that in TSO, too, but I managed to exist in the same game with them, and to partake in game things they partook of - I just never talked to them, lol. From: Prokofy Neva Coco has always come to my defense, on "the Professor's" website and here, just because she has a lot of common sense and isn't part of that whole tekkie wiki culture. I have a lot of respect for what she's accomplished. I'm going to keep on giving her all I can in the game -- free land to build on, any little money-making jobs I can come up with, posrates, game help -- whatever, as I do with all my TSO friends and acquaintances. And I'm definitely going to respect her more if she does the suck-up here at this crucial juncture, and leaves me behind, because for her to go on defending me will only cripple her in the game and I don't wish that on her. I don't need her to come on all angry at me or all angry at you and indignant that you subjected her to such hazing like claiming she's my alt. The best thing for Coco to do right now is to not reply to this post and keep making and bears and stick in the pins in the right places.
I do want her to know that she is absolutely free to laugh at the bear with the big head called Prok, and even stick a pin in it if that's what it takes (can't wait to see the scripting genius at work making *that* animation, just hope it doesn't lag the sim). Get a screenshot even. Well, obviously I didn't laugh about the bear with the big head. Nothing is funny that singles out another player in front of a crowd and paints him in such a way. If a person puts himself in that place, and asks, "Would I think this were funny if it were me?" and the answer is "no," then the thing shouldn't be made and displayed. No one will ever decide my friendships for me. I look at each individual separately, and as a potential friend, knowing that no one is perfect. Through friendship, we can influence each other. I appreciate all the help you give me, and wish I could give back more (maybe someday I can), and I know you consistently do these kindnesses for so many people in the game, often at your own financial loss. I think some on these boards don't realize that. coco

Prok's slam book analogy is well taken, the recent shunning on the boards could have been right out of the movie "Mean Girls." As the primary instigator of the shunning, I can assure you that it had nothing to do with social pecking order, and everything to do with improving the general nature of these forums. Amidst all of the prime nuisance's rants, the good debates and discussions are lost. The helpful hints and guides are drowned in a sea of vitriol spewed forth by a vociferous egoist. I couldn't give a flying fuck what the trendy people do. In world, I spend my time building mecha avs, tinkering with vehicles and building my home. The last time I attended a club, it was out of a sense of obligation to an old friend. Quite honestly, I only care what other creators are up to. I enjoy seeing their work, and I enjoy promoting SL as a means of creating new and interesting stuff. The endless drama which Prokofy and the other members of the Fucking Idiot Contingent fabricate is distracting and annoying.

What does any of this matter? Not much, as long as you like the person you are, and not just the person you think you are. A very interesting and intelligent read! I agree with alot of what you say, but I think you may be misinterpetting some of it. Such as: 1. People get uptight about Prok's posts, not because of the true content, buried deep inside, but because of the arrogance and hostility displayed in the way he posts it. Someone who is always pointing fingers really really should pause from time to time to gaze into a mirror. I think most folks that could be considered supposed FIC are very amused at the whole idea of the FIC and are just having fun with it for the most part. 2. Really, no one has any power over another in SL, other than LL. Some folks are witty, creative and intelligent. Some folks are loving, compassionate and kind. Some are crude, wild and rebellious. It's a huge mixing pot. But when all is said and done, everyone is free to build what they want, go where they want, and do what they want within the bounds of the ToS. So while certain residents may havr the ears of certain Lindens, the screaming masses will always make the most impression because they effect the profit margin the most. 3. I think Aimee is adorable. I think Flip is funny as hell. I think Cris and Chip are intelligent and articulate. I think Torrid has a sexy voice. I have many opinions about many things. Does this make me a cool-kid wannabe? Not at all. I do what I want, say what I want, and could give a rats ass about what most think of me. Are there some folks that want to climb the social ladders. Probably. But who cares? Why would anyone, inculding Prok, care what folks do with their SL time if it doesn't directly effect their own SL time. Do what you want in SL, and try to have fun as you find it. 4. I thank Prok for the FIC thingy, merely because it's livened things up and brought about many great jokes. SL, or at least the forums, would be boring without counter-opinions, wild ideas and theories and very vocal members. It would just be better if everyone could do so in a less "attacking/hostile" way. I didn't agree with the anti-Prok campaign, nor do I agree with any form of censorship, other than personal choice really. The best censorhsip is always self-censorship. But really..love live the FIC, the Cool Kids, the Outsiders, and the Lone Wolves. They all stand equally, and I enjoy visiting and conversing with all of them.

I find it amusing when Prokofy comes up with some arbitrary range of numbers, as in the 6-8 people ignoring him, or the 12-49 people in the FIC. Anyway, I am bored enough and unirritated enough by Prokofy now that I am one of the 6-8 people who don't have to scroll for hours to read a thread (I caught the 12-49 number in someone's quote), I thought I would make a short list of the FIC, to prove there are more than 49 people. This is in no particular order. For those I have overlooked, I apologize. There are thousands more that belong on this list - these are just people I know or know of Baccara Rhodes David Valentino Neehai Zapata Lo Jacobs Trinity Serpentine Nala Galatea Pendari Lorentz Artemis Fate Marilyn Murphy Wednesday Grim Misnomer Jones Eggy Lippmann Mistress, Torrid, Chip and Myself (but not Daysleeper or Dakonin Midnight) Shadow Weaver Pahoa Jade Pituca Chang Garth Fairlight Myradyl Muse Tony Tigereye BigJohn Jade Wuvme Karuna Lukas Thetan Beryl Greenacre Gracie Greenacre Adam Zaius Nexus Nash Nolan Nash Mash Mandala Jimmy Thompson Foxy Xevious Nyna Slate Pandastrong Fairplay (he survived a coup attempt) Fey Brightwillow Anyone whose name ends in Schlegel Drift Monde Cua Curie Siobhan Taylor Kris Ritter Willow Zander CrystalShard Foo Asri Falcone Blue Burke Francis Chung Launa Fauna FlipperPa Perregrine Jennyfur Perregrine Owen Khan Eboni Khan Edward Khan Taeja Diaz Lynn Lippmann Siggy Romulus Jonquille Noir Lumiere Noir Feliciaa Feaver Tanya Garcia Bob Bunderfeld Sensual Casanova Trimda Hedges Jack Digeridoo Lordfly Digeridoo Aimee Weber Damien Fate Washu Zebrastripe Water Rogers Aurelie Starseeker Ace Cassidy Lecktor Hannibal Lash Xevious Apotheus Silverman Anshe Chung Cubey Terra Merwan Marker Misty Rhodes Nick Rhodes Nick Fairlight Taessa Weaver Ulrika Zugzwang Kendra Bancroft Catherine Cotton Paolo Portocarrero Taylor Portocarrero Ingrid Ingersoll Ursa Falcone Torley Torgeson Kex Godel Cienna Rand Roberta Dalek si Money Fleabite Beach Spider Mandala Hank Ramos Raithe Underthorn Zeppi Schlegel Lianne Marten Pol Tabla Fallingwater Cellardoor Eddie Escher Nicola Escher Darko Cellardoor Juro Kothari Paris Cellardoor Sapphire Bombay Beta Rubio Taco Rubio Oz Spade Jade Lily Ana Lily Kim Anubis Ariel Roentgen Stormy Roentgen Madame Maracas Candy Apple Obscuro Valkyrie ......... and thousands more.

From: Jake Reitveld Then there are the out crowds.
I created an in-world group called " F)orum (I)n (C)rowd". Chances are you won't be invited (unless you give me your lunch money). From: Merwan Marker What! OMG - how can you mute Torley?????
Sky truly is falling. Merwan, I had to mute Torley. She is too close to being the epitome of the coolest person in the universe. She gives me "radical" envy. From: Hiro Pendragon Okay, even if that's true, and even if you discount the obvious "people voted for the pie & hiro option" factor, and the tongue-out emoticons used in posts prior to yours, Ingrid Ingersoll still beat you to an image post with the Degrassi Jr High linked image. In Chapter 12 Article 1 Section 3 Subsection 6 Line item 14 of the "What is automatically funny in a web forum" guidelines at www.fetedinnercore.com, it clearly states that out-of-context references to childhood television shows that no one's remembered for years clearly meet all requirements for humor. So there. Ingrid is my alt. This goes way back to TSO. If you were Inner you would know this by now. I need to see the secret handshake to confirm your true identity before you come to the next FIC meeting.

From: Cristiano Midnight I find it amusing when Prokofy comes up with some arbitrary range of numbers, as in the 6-8 people ignoring him, or the 12-49 people in the FIC. There are thousands more that belong on this list - these are just people I know or know of Baccara Rhodes David Valentino That was mean of you! I'm so far from FIC that they won't even let me wash their windows. I did recently visit some FIC hangouts though, but it was merely as part of a research project..I swear! *quickly wipes the brown stain from his nose* I'm far to lazy, deviant and confused to be FIC! *walks away in a huff to complain to his pet Linden* Oh! That's another thing...I don't even really know any Lindens..and I've been here for a long time!! *wipes away a tear*

lol since when am I FIC? I live in an abandoned warehouse huddling up to a fire in a garbage can for warmth.
And I like Flipper's list of the FIC better: FIC=Everyone in SL - 1

From: Hiro Pendragon Ingrid Ingersoll still beat you to an image post with the Degrassi Jr High linked image. So there. Finally! I was wondering if anyone would recognize the Degrassi kids.

From: pandastrong Fairplay You forgot Unhygienix Gullwing (He banged Testerd2 Tester). They finally found love? There was a touching bondage personal post in my forums from Unhygienix - I always wondered what became of it. I am now happy to note that the forum served a purpose.

From: Ardith Mifflin As the primary instigator of the shunning, I can assure you that it had nothing to do with social pecking order, and everything to do with improving the general nature of these forums.
Of course you had a reasonable motive for the shunning. That does not change the fact that it was a damned poor show. One can ignore somone with out making a festival of it. I fail to see how it imporved the forums beyond egendering a slam fest on Prok. I hold nothing against you as a person-I don't know know the cut of your cloth so to speak. But in insitgating the shunning you made, in my own opinion, a mistake in judgment.
