Dwell Abuse

This thread begins by displaying screenshots of dwell abuse in Second Life. Dwell Abuse is the intentional loggin in and idling of accounts to artificially increase the dwell on a plot of land. Since dwell equates US$ Developer Incentives in SL, this needs to be exposed to all.

I'll be posting screenshots (and invite others to do the same) to expose this abuse of the Dwell System...

This snapshot is from Chaos Theory Gaming. The people on the wall (there are more on an opposite wall) just sit there all day, doing nothing except gaining dwell for the plot to artificially increase the dwell there.

Could it be that maybe they are collecting the free money from the raffle ball? Just a thought. :p

you know this saddens me...
As alot of people know Le Cadre is usually on that list... but we are there because are constantly entertaining with events and fun stuff to do for the community and chances for new and old to win prizes and extra cash...
I always wonder how some places are on the list, or how some places have extremley high dwell points but you never see thier place very busy...

Huh. Chaos Theory looks exactly as it did when I went by it months and moths ago. Vacant except for a few people sitting (away) and (busy) on the wall.

They're probably just scripting or something, working busily in the script window on new games or something.

I agree :) I would like to see proof where there isn't a free money ball going 24/7. It is sad especially when there are other places that genuinally earn dwell. ;)

I've flown past that specific build (which is near tops on the pg dwell list) many many times.. and i have never seen anyone ever playing a game... just always 6-10 people sitting on the walls. And this isn't to pick on them. *ALL* of the builds that i have seen get 10k dwell or more, have (on days they don't have events) this sort of thing going on...

large numbers of people sitting, 'busy' or 'away', many with 'afk' as a group title...

they're there for the money ball?

I don't know how much sense that would make unless those people exist in SL 24/7 to solely get L$10 at a time from a "free money ball".

What are they going to spend that L$10 on, a new ass donut cushion to sit by the free money ball for another month?

nope you still get booted after 20 mins... or i do anyways...

and i thought with dwell the same person only had to be there 5 mins a day to get the dwell and it couldnt be affected by how long or how many times u visit there in one day

I thought that even if you set yourself Busy or Away, SL would log you off after 30min for inactivity?

I occassionally go Busy if I'm someplace, but that's because the phone's rung, or I've spilled beer on the desk and have to clean it up. :D
If I'm busy on my land it's so that I can do stuff in photoshop and not appear rude to someone who may wander by and think I'm ignoring them.

I thought dwell worked in a way that when say 4 people go somewhere if they are there atleast X amount of minutes that plot gets dwell for four people x amount for each person, but not extra dwell if they stay longer?

Some scripts and some animations keep you from getting logged off. I learned this the embarrasing way one night. :D

If these people are expecting to get more money the longer they're online, the joke's on them -- you only have to be online for 5 minutes in one spot to give *all* of your day's dwell to that landowner. Stying online for 5 hours won't bring more dwell than 5 minutes. They're wasting their time and bandwidth.

That is how I understand it as well. All these people hanging around generate dwell for their first 5 minutes, then they are jsut sitting on a wall.

They could be logging in for the dwell, then staying so that it always appears that there are green dots on the map. People tend to flock to a place more if there are green dots on it. It is certainly a marketing strategy. And also they could not understand how the dwell works in SL and think that it is like TSO. In TSO the longer you were on the property, the better your "TSO Dwell" was (it wasn't dwell but can't remember what it was called).

Dwell is such that an avatar who logs in and spends only five minutes in game gives as many dwell points to a plot of land as someone who logs in and spends two or four or six or multiple hours. If an av logs in for five minutes but spends that whole time on one plot of land, the land owner gets all the dwell points. If an av logs in for two hours and spends, say, half an hour on four different plots, the four different land owners equally split the total dwell that av has generated.

If a land owner figures it's worth his while to pay avatars to dwell on his land, thereby generating more dwell, is that wrong? Technically it's not a TOS violation. But, it does underscore the inherent unfairness of, and myriad possibilties of gaming, the dwell system.

I THINK you have to be there at least 5 minutes to be eligible for dwell points... but the LONGER you are there the more dwell points you can give... This is what I THINK and seem to notice...

If I'm not mistaken, dwell works almost on a percentage system. It doesn't matter how much time you're in SL in any given day, whether it be 5 minutes or 24 hours. Each avatar has a certain number of dwell points that are "given out" to the various places that avatar spends time in during a 24-hour period. The places that the person spends time in are awarded that person's dwell points based on which of those places he or she spent the most time in.

Very simplistically stated: if you are on for 100 minutes in a day and you spend 85 minutes at Club Dwellhere, 10 minutes at Dwellbucks Casino, and 5 minutes at home, then Club Dwellhere gets 85% of your dwell points, Dwellbucks Casino gets 10%, and home gets 5%.

I'm pretty sure the algorithm is a bit more complex than that, but that's a pretty good simplification of it, I think.
