"Power user" email

i got one too.. hurray ... you all scared me with your talks of it being a scam.. anyway i never post on here and i have a lot of land.. so i dunno how they picked um

I got one too. As far as criteria goes, all I can say is I have 4096 land and build. I have a store, The Mausoleum, that was just starting to take off before the new economy. So I'm waiting and watching to see how it affects my sales.
I have been in SL since 10/1 and tend to be more of an observer then participater. Although I love being around people and cracking up over they're antics

The wording is odd, especially as Catherine has said it was basically random, "a broad sampling of users". That's a pretty huge contradiction to the content of the letter:



So you lied in the email then Catherine? Why? If it was a board sampling then these aren't residents you necessarily know or that another Linden Lab staffer thinks much of, so why all the false, kiss-ass sentiment?

It's the sort of enticement ploy that screams false and manipulative.

Lance I've been around on these forums too long to know when it's a joke and when it's a poorly hidden blow to ones misplaced sense of self esteem.

Yes, I noticed these contradictions too. I also have not really had that much contact with any of the Lindens, and my business is fairly new as well.

Maybe they think folks would be less inclined to fill out a survey if they thought it was automated or something?

Or maybe someone hacked Linden Labs??

I think it's all good.

Contribute and do-good and derive your sense of self-satisfaction from that. The more you do that, the less you'll be concerned about what other people think, and the less that silly and rather irrelevant things like this will mean to you.

oddly, after I filed/sent the filled out survey, I could then apparantly take it again. Didn't complete it, so I am not positive, but I was tempted.

Frankly, I'm glad to see LL doing some work on targeting new users. If we're going to reach the population level of 1 million users by 2007 (as Philip has stated), they need to figure out how to do that.

Huh, what's that got to do with it? Yes I did get one on an alt I've always had for testing purposes. My reply had nothing to do with self-satisfaction, it had to do with Linden Lab lying in their marketing emails. I'm not sure I'm entirely keen on that - if they feel they have to make up this wonderful group of power users and heap such high praise on them when in fact they just randomly selected people, in what other ways are we manipulated into action by less than truthful comments from them? Just got me thinking.

That's cracked.

Yeah I know it's marketing research but it just has that sleazy tone of spam - you know it feels like those emails sent by some Nigerian telling you they're acting on behalf of some fake dead king wanting to deposit millions into your bank account with a huge cut for you. You were specially selected because you are a pillar of the community and for your grace, trustworthiness and exemplary business dealings.

Catherine didn't have to out and out lie on these to get responses. Just say you've been randomly selected and as a user in Second Life they'd value your opinions. That's different to the fantasy world Catherine portrayed, as the email lied about how the recipients had been selected.

i dunno, it's not a big deal really. it made me feel good to be called an elite vanguard. so what if they randomly picked me? made my morning a lil bit brighter.

It's a bit like those prize draw letters you get:

Our computer, out of the whole of the UK, selected the city of LONDON!

Our computer, out of the whole of LONDON, selected the postcode of SW2!

Out of all residents of the postcode SW2, only five hundred households were selected.

And you, MISS GILLESPIE, are one of those households!

You know what would have been really interesting is if Catherine had sent half the surveys out with a fairly generic introduction ("randomly selected, please fill out survey, blah blah blah", and then the other half with the, "sleazy spam-tone" intro (to paraphrase Moopf) that was used, and then tracked which set garnered more and better quality responses.

I know next to nothing about marketing practices and procedures, but I'm guessing there is a psychological angle to the way this survey was engineered. What the hell, I'll live in the "fantasy world" of being a "power user" of SL for a brief bit of time.

Where are the surveys for the non-content creator explorers?
