From: Stormy Roentgen I haven't gone through the password retrieval process for forgotten passwords, but it probably asks for the email corresponding to your account, to which they'd send your password or a new one.
Sooo, if the email was a hoax and you filled in the last question with the email corresponding to your account, they could use it to get into your SL account. WHAT!?! did it ask for your sl password? DO NOT EVER GIVE ANYONE YOUR SL PASSWORD. go change it now NOW right now this minute now go

the survey website's the same as another Linden survey i got one time. i dunno what make a power user tho. i don't own a whole lot of land and if i ever sold anything i made it was accidentally. i guess they can just sense awesome creativity. um......it doesn't ask for your SL password. duh. it asks for an email address if you want to blah blah something something. no one can get your password by having your email address unless they can read your email too......

Mine came while I was in game last night. I contacted Char Linden and she verified it was legit. Why I'm considered a power user, I have no clue. lol

Someone should forward it to Catherine just to make sure it's legit. Oh, never mind. Just saw the last post hehe.

Linden Lab will occasionally pick people at random within certain paramaters for feedback. This is a GOOD thing.
As for using an outside server for the survey, this is GOOD. Would you rather have the dev team muck around for a day with a PHP module, check its security concerns, and so on... or fix bugs within SL? To me, its a no brainer.
Catherine doesn't get in world much either, but is very nice, and probably set this up with her team on her own as best she could without hitting up the tech team for resources. Again, a good move... why re-invent the wheel?
Regards,
-Flip

I got an email, too; my gameplay has gone down somewhat from what it used to be, but I'm still active enough on forums and try to get to town halls and things like that. I currently own around 3000m of land. I've also noticed that LL seems to be using some sort of marketing service to check traffic on the SL site. I keep getting little cookie requests if I happen to access the site through the main page. I'm sure that LL is trying to figure out how to better market the game to the rest of the world. And, as several folks have noted, that's a good thing.

From: Charlotte Gillespie It seems as if Linden have created this survey on a free-survey website, rather than gone to the trouble of installing the relevant PHP survey applications on their own server. I got that to LOL. i felt special for a moment!

Could we get a Linden response to this, sometime?

Could be if you just make your email available in your profile? I find it hard to believe LL would do this without at least an announcement they're pretty good about that sort of thing. It's not like others wouldn't find out.

Uh.
For one, I didn't get one.
For two, LLabs usually doesn't put out weird http addresses for surveys (if I recall they usually used surveymonkey.com or whatever, which was easily visible).
For three, the letter seems to be written unprofessionally.
For four... I didn't get one, and if anyone's a fetid inner core elite content baron power user, it'd be me.
For five, Linden Lab usually doesn't refer to residents as elite vanguards of anything.
For six, this is fishy as hell.
For seven, the website doesn't work anymore.
So... yeah.

Yeah, I didn't get one either. I'm not *too* much of a "Content Baron", but I sure am feted and inner ;P
Good points, LF.

The survey did not ask for any personal info other than email and that was optional. The questions asked were very general marketing related questions. After seeing the variety of members who got this email it seems to have been sent randomly. I think it was complimentary in order to motivate participation.

the urls in the email were the same as in another Linden survey i got. not lindenlab.com or secondlife.com but some i guess redirect thingy. anyway it's the same as another one i got. the survey is at surveymonkey.com once you get there. looks exactly like the other Linden survey i did. didn't ask for any personal info besides email addy. which they already had anyway. Lordfly which website are you saying doesn't work? i just checked the email again and all the links still work for me. the website for the redirects is http://www.vresp.com/ and again, same as the other Linden survey i did months back.

Survey is legit!
01-20-2005 10:09
Wow, you all are a tough crowd! Yep, the survey was sent to a broad sampling of users to understand how and why you use Second Life. No nefarious subtext or attempt to deceive was intended. Lordfly, the letter was unprofessional?? We use Vertical Response to send out our emails and Survey Monkey to host our surveys because both are easy to use and set up (i.e. I can do it without asking anyone in ops to help me). If, however, you are having problems, or are worried about anything, please feel free to email me catherine@lindenlab.com. Thanks for your help! Catherine

Sorry, i'm a bit testy between classes. However... in the future, it might be best for linden lab if they had their webmonkey code up a survey page for you all to use, so it doesn't look so weird. I'd LIKE to have gotten an email. I certainly have a LOT of suggestions for them simply based on my previous VR worlds experience and my level of computer/3D modeling expertise, not even considering my "prowess" or "reputation" in-world. Sure, I don't build as much as some people do (I would if I had the RL time to spare!), I can hold my own with scripting but choose to do other stuff, I am not patient enough to be much of a clothing designer, and I don't really sell anything in-world, so what's the criteria?? I DO do a lot of "entertaining" as a DJ, but who knows! My guess is most people who got the letter have spoken at length with one Linden or other, have worked on a major project in-world, and the like. I got a bazillion ideas to improve SL, some of which may have been mentioned, some that may have not. I'd like to have the opportunity to give fedback directly instead of it getting lost in the forums someplace! Peace and Happy Building! Arti

i bet alot of people who haven't got them yet will get them soon. seriously there's no way if it's based on merit that i should get one and Lordfly not get one. either they're randomly chosen or they're still sending them. and if you get one please please when it asks for ways to improve creativity put down something about making nested linksets like the way most programs do grouping. i forgot to mention that and it's a big one for me.

I do wonder how they chose them because I've had little to no contact with the Lindens.
