What on earth is this email which I have just received? Does anyone else get this stuff? From: someone From: "Linden Lab" <Linden_Lab@mail.vresp.com> ins Adressbuch To: ********@gmx.net Subject: Second Life Power User Survey Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2005 03:05:20 +0000 January 19, 2005 Hi, I'm writing to you because you're resident I know and whose opinion I value highly -- or because another Linden Lab staffer thinks just as much of you, and recommended I drop you a line. You're a member of that treasured group sometimes known as "power users" or "content creators", the elite vanguard who've brought more community and creativity to the world of Second Life than we ever thought possible. So first of all, thank you. The reason I'm writing you now is to ask a few minutes of your time, to help us out with a private, exclusive survey. It's designed to help us understand how and why people of your calibre use Second Life. It's completely anonymous, though there is a place at the end for you to add your email address if you'd like to learn more about a marketing program I'm putting together. *************************************************************************** Survey link below! *************************************************************************** To get started, simply click the link below. The survey has approximately 30 questions and shouldn't take too long. Most importantly, your feedback and suggestions will help us make Second Life a better place. Take the survey http://r.vresp.---/49ee31c*************************************************************************** Thanks again for making Second Life so amazing, Sincerely, -- Catherine Linden and the team at Second Life *************************************************************************** This is a one-time email - if you no longer wish to receive emails from Linden Lab, please reply to this message with "Unsubscribe" in the subject line or simply click on the following link: http://unsub.vresp.com/u.html?---/49ee31c_____________________________________________________________________ This message was sent by Linden Lab Linden Lab 577 Second Street Suite 200 San Francisco, California 94107-1459

Can I have my own personal slave - sorry, concierge - if I fill in their questionnaire?

One of the questions is "your age", complete with an "under-18" option. It's a way of filtering out minors!

Should I be insulted that I didn't get one? Maybe it's time to pull a YM and demand respect. You will respect me! I have made grilled cheese sandwiches! Who can resist the lure of grilled cheese sandwiches?

I got one on an alt that is all but a power user. I reported the mail to Linden Lab as I'm sure it's not from them, but rather sent by someone impersonating them and collection info.

Actually, I'd agree, although it sounds pretty authentic, on one point: LL would not give you an unsubscribe link. They describe how you can change your email options by logging into 'Your Account'. Of course its not an LL email address, either.

It seems as if Linden have created this survey on a free-survey website, rather than gone to the trouble of installing the relevant PHP survey applications on their own server.

But even when they've done that before, the email itself has always come from a real LL email address. So nyah!

If you examine previous messages from Second Life, such as the Second Life Report which was emailed on October 15, you'll see that the return addresses are also from vresp.com.

Scanned back thru my emails from SL, and I have never received one from any addresses other than lindenlab.com or secondlife.com. (And I have none for any time around October 15th save for a warning about my forum conduct ) Strange.

From: Heather Nyak oops well i filled it in cant do any harm though can it? I haven't gone through the password retrieval process for forgotten passwords, but it probably asks for the email corresponding to your account, to which they'd send your password or a new one. Sooo, if the email was a hoax and you filled in the last question with the email corresponding to your account, they could use it to get into your SL account.

From: someone ... whose opinion I value highly ... treasured group ... ... the elite vanguard ... ... people of your calibre ...
My alt isn't these thing at all. Not even known. Not rich, not big land owner. Never created anything of consequence.... A LL employee would have some criteria to select people ; this seem random to me. Also, it's awfully flatering... makes me suspicious From: someone about a marketing program I'm putting together.
Lots of use of "I" , it doesn't sound right. If I were an employee of LL, I'd use "we". I still think it's from some greedy kapitalist dog who's after my informations.

I got one of those too. They might use landownership, or merely the list of premium accounts, or the number of posts on the forum, who the hell knows.
But before we all puff up with self-importance that we are selected as "power gamers" we should realize that they are merely trying to data-mine to strip out even more information about customers to do their marketing. I don't mind giving it to them, but it's the sort of thing that people like humdog at Second Life Herald are always ranting about as an invasion of privacy so don't fill it out.
They ask you to provide the same e-mail again that they sent you the questionnaire too. There's never any question about passwords or credit cards, and it is an authentic mail from Catherine Linden -- I can't see anything about it that is fake.
But then they will take that e-mail and give it to someone to help their "marketing" as they state explicably.
I'm happy to help them with their marketing if it frees them up more time to fix all their servers and get them faster.

Yes. I received one as well and have 8192 m^2 of land, if that means anything.
