Since some don't like Sexy Contests, Should Sexual Content be taken out of SL?

Start with a statement that doesn't have inherent bias. What evidence do you have to support this. What does "alot of you" mean. How does this relate in terms of inworld -- if Phillip Linden's sense that the forum reader represents 10-20% of the SL players.

Surreal

There is a reason Linden Labs implemented Event Funding to begin with, which is currently a debate towards mostly Educational activities currently. Yes alot of the Social types are going to get hit hard. Those that already have a in game Partner or girlfriend or boyfriend it isn't going to be as much of an issue and those that aren't here for that and mainly to design it isn't an issue at all. Will it effect how many newcommers come into the game? Time will tell. Will it effect "Dating" and "Togetherness" time will also tell. People like this are a part of life and is one thing that lured me to it, even though now it isn't a big issue because I have a girlfriend. If I was a newbie and had no place to go for Entertainment like Clubs and meet someone, would I get bored and leave? To each their own.

Just remember why "The Sims" became the hottest selling game in History.

This thread is a little odd, it seems to me that the posters and the thread orginator are running different discussions, however I believe Philip addressed both point neatly last night while answering Bianca's posit.

From: someone
You: Bianca Baggio: If you want everyone in SL to enjoy themselves then why take away their fun and pleasure because you think we should have more "educational" events and they are the only ones that deserve reimb. you are passing judgment in a way..isn't this really about cleaning up the SEX in 2nd life that has gotten so out of hand
Philip Linden: Again, as I said at the start.
Philip Linden: We don't determine what is fun...
Philip Linden: I suspect that many folks will find ways to fund these experiences
Philip Linden: privately.
Philip Linden: I know some folks are doing that now.
Philip Linden: I have no opinion about sex in SL.
Philip Linden: That is not our concern ... whether to 'clean up'.

A casino owner is in the same boat for support as a sexy thong event holder as far as support goes when all the new stuff fully kicks in, but if you are a land owner and have well attended events on your property, you'll get the benefits (however minimal, frankly) of dwell, the same as always.

Sex sells, we all know that. We also know that advertising, marketing, etc. tends to slide to the lowest common denomenator as well. Let me share a little dwell/club/mature content experiences with you, if you're not bored to tears yet.

I have co-owned various PG and M plots of land in SL that have been used as my silly versions of houses, stores for stuff we make, nightclubs and malls. I have seen our little club pull enough traffic to get posted to the "popular places" list a few times. We don't get huge crowds, we have held a regular event once a week for about 9 months, and every so often, we get a big crowd or do something really insane like a 100 hour DJing marathon.

So, when did we make it onto the coveted, and now expensive, "popular" list? Was it when the title of the event included the word Sex? There have been a few, often as an immediately apparent joke, but not always. Nope. We got the biggest crowds with Trance music (not even a live DJ back then) & Trivia contests (very weird, stupid questions are our specialty) and with the 100 hour Marathon, which developed a great deal of momentum and STUPENDOUS support from the furry community.

What does this tell me? CONTENT can attract and retain attendees. Sex can sell, but I think it was the cash that was also doing the attraction. Our events were never big cash-spewing festivals, dont' have those resources, the idea was to have some fun, maybe attract some folks to look at our designs. Really.

So the changes in (can't help but think of EHC hehe) mean that maybe I'll give out really neat clothes or gadgets or gift certificates instead of cash. But maybe I'll still give out cash, because, frankly, if my sales stay strong enough to support cash prizes in this "new" economy, then it's fine.

SO, do I want sexual content removed or policed? NO
Do I think LL is gonna do that? NO
Are there areas for those that care not to deal w/mature content? YES (where were you when I was selling PG land, folks?)
Am I gonna stop having events that are silly and fun and have trivia contests and some sort of prizes? NO

SL benefits from a stated philosphy of fostering creativity, so maybe we all should look at these changes as an OPPORTUNITY to pick up the quality of our games, and manage the alteration of the terrain.

As to the sim - to - sim PG/M issue, yea it's sorta amusing to consider if I"m TPing someplace or flying around, "gee are my nipples covered?", but that's all it is, a momentary thought. So what, put on another outfit or more outfit. VR is often more of a dress-up (or dress-down) game than anything else, for me at least, that's the fun of designing.

Damn that's long! *snicker*

I never said they get more dwell funding, Why are people bitching about Clubs getting Event Funding? Because creators do not get creation funding, therefore; they feel it is unfair possibly, otherwise there wouldn't have been the debate.

Hmmmm! How about a reward for item use? I mean, LL can keep track of inventory use, I would think...what if clothiers got rewarded for lots of people wearing thier outfits....or weaponmakers rewarded for the amount of time people have the item attached? Or animation creators rewarded for the number of times their animation is executed? Or programmers rewarded for the number of times a script get used?

These ideas, of course, wuld need all sorts of tweaking and regulating to actually put into practice...but I do have to agree with Blake (gasp! :D ) that it's a bit unfair to just reward land use when there are so many other creative outlets that have the means to be tracked in the system....

Flying

Sokie, perfectly valid Q. ;D

For me it's more the content buildwise than the content of the shops and such. Flying through a sim like Da Boom is like flying through coagulated gravy for me, and probably more than just me. :>

That's probably why the sims are not all grouped together in M or PG. Sure you could fly through 10 PG zones in seconds, but it would take all day to fly through 10 M zones.

Blake, it isn't about the sexual content, it's about the cookie cutter, explotative events. THINK MAN, THINK!

Seems to me this isn't about removing sexual content at all and the poll is kind of pointless. What all this IS about is trying to fight inflation (a noble but unreachable goal, right? lol).

Clubs and clubbers are getting bent out of shape about it claiming the Lindens are trying to be the morality police, when what they really should be saying is "Waaah, they won't give us free money to give away anymore, so we can't pay poeple to hang out here!" And to that I say, good! Now people will have to provide a place worth spending time at. And if people really want to go to wet T-shirt night, more power too them, go and have fun. Why can't you go without getting paid for it? Unless you really don't care about whatever lame "best <adjective> avatar" event is going on, and were just there to get free money. If that is the case, then I am at a loss for words... but "pathetic" comes to mind.

Yes, ban all sex related stuff. Make the default AV look like one of the old Puritans. Adjust the sliders so that dresses may not be higher than the shin. Also, women should not be allowed to wear pants, so get rid of that.

As for underwear, only knickers should be allowed and also AVs should not be permitted to remove their outer clothes if there is another AV within 90m. If an AV comes within 90m, outer clothes should automatically be put on.

Change the meaning of "M" mature sims to mean places where Senior Citizen AVs go.

Men should not be permitted to remove their outer shirts and must always wear an undershirt.

Women must also always wear high coller, long sleeve shirts.

I think that would be a great place to start.

Tee hee.

I don't have a problem with sexual content being allowed in SL, but I do wish it wasn't so "in your face." To me, sex is a personal, private matter that is left in RL as far as I'm concerned, or atleast just between me and my RL boyfriend. I don't feel the need to share it with 30 strangers in an SL club nor flaunt it in my profile... "Hey, look at me! I'm a slut!" To each his/her own. It's not the allowance of sexual content that is a problem, but the lack of dignity on the part of some residents is simply saddening to me, and the events list spam got old long ago. I no longer bother looking for anything worthwhile on that list. And no I'm not a prude. I've bought sexual "content" a couple times, although mostly for laughs. As an example, feel free to check out the bottom "pick" in my profile sometime. :p

This pole question is like asking if sex should be taken out of RL (setting aside it's necessary for baby making). Just like sex in RL has a time and place, I wish sexual content in SL did too. Yes, there are mature sims, but that doesn't help much when it's plastered all over the events list and 75% of the female profiles I look at. It's TMI, although very telling about the person behind the AV and helpful in deciding if I find this person interesting enough to persue any conversation with.

NO!

It affects everyone! Some people believe that the human form should be covered, both virtually and in reality! If we allow sexy content, it will only encourage more sex in RL and there will be more shameful sin in the world!

Cover those AVs up people! Remember, if that dress is above the shins, you are going to be Hell bound!

Tee hee.
This is fun.

Actually I voted to keep the content in myself. Strange how people want to keep Sexual Content but want Sexy Contest gone.
