Jon,

I think most people get to know others before getting involved with them. That is a useful technique which you might find helpful.

And if you want to talk about rules...

For someone who wants to start a virtual church, this is not the best example of forgiveness I've ever seen. Turning your back on this person doesn't much follow the example set for you by a certain carpenter.

There are two sides to every story. True, the other side may not erase what happened, but it may explain things.

On the other hand, for some people SL is just a game

Sigh, no one ever comes on to MY av. Maybe the idea of making love to a baby with wings is a turn off?

I think plenty "broads" in this game are actually dudes who are taking a walk on the flip side. Only a few are open about it though.

I think you would be well advised to remember that you are on the internet, with all that implies.

I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with doin that. Probably could have figured... but well I build that high up so ppl aren't always doin that sorta stuff up there ;)

Jon,
Unfortunatly you really don't know who or what's on the other side & you can't trust or dis-trust someone until you do get to know them. Atleast you figured out pretty quickly what she was really all about... be thankful for that atleast. Sorry you had a bad initial experience. But in any online enviroment you will find dis-honest people that piss you off & make you want to reach through the screen & strangle them (just hypothetical of course :p ) You will also find people that make your stomache hurt from laughing so hard. Gotta take the good with the bad tho & become more wise in the process. Give a person respect until they prove themselves unworthy of it & be careful who you trust.

Hehe, the term Second Life, and Alternate Gaming Environment mean anything? Remember SL is just a chat room with pictures, avatars, buildings, and varying environments. BUT, its STILL JUST A CHAT ROOM! Spend an hour or two in any anonymous chat room on Yahell, or MSN, or any of the various other varieties, people are FOS (full of chit :P ), and <gasp!> they tend to role play <go figure> It's a freaking virtual environment, people will use that to exploit, take advantage, and outright be a-holes. You check in, leave your trusting nature at the door, or be prepared to wash off the boot prints. I know mine is a cynical opinion, but, unfortunately, it echos the truth.

Be better than them, be yourself, but approach every person you meet with a jaundiced eye, make them show themselves as their true being. No matter how attractive their avatar may be, or how appealing their 'come on' lines may sound. They will eventually lose the Sun, and the Shadow they are hiding behind, then they are exposed as their true selves. Wait for the cloud, then you will find genuine people, because, with their shadow gone, they do not change.

Beware the doppleganger, for it is the beast that saps our trust. Yet beware becoming overly cautious, for then, you will not enjoy life to it's fullest.

Proceed cautiously, yet with a sense of adventure, take the leap, but measure the chasm first. Risk vs reward. This is a GREAT game, but Caveat Emptor.

Speak for yourself. Not all of us feel that way about SL. Some of us actually feel that people that DO feel that way embody just about everything that's wrong (socially and politically) in SL.

All we ask is that you respect the fact that not everyone agrees with you that this is "just a game."

Grim you missed my point, I was merely stating that like a chat room, this is a virtual environment, and we must all be on guard for false fronts. Allegory gets so lost sometimes...

I find it interesting, that, while I share your point of view, and was just merely attempting to give someone else a different point of view, you chose to attack my post, instead of trying to help the individual who started this thread. Focus! Lose the myopic vision, see the big picture.

I present my true self in game, always shall, have even exchanged phone numbers with a few people. have several others on various messenger services, and we chat out of the game. But I always realise that there might be sheeps clothing on the wolf, to not take the cautionary step is to invite disappointment.

Well I hope your church comes to happen in SL. I'm tired of the losers who seem to oppose such things because of various issues they have yet they go parading around doing things 10 times worse.

Don't let a few lousy encounters spoil the vision of the game itself. While SL is rampant with sex, cybering, stripping, and other crap (here comes the flames for that one), there is some normal stuff too. All that above stuff is highly overrated, but its a money maker so that's why its so popular.

Creativity is the spice of life for the game. And I will give props to the creators of the 'mature' items too. I've seen some good creations hitting SL lately.

If you ever want help making your church, I'd be happy to assist.

Edit: bad typos.. bad typos

Julia, agreed, I love the diversity of SL, yet I approach ANYONE who attempts to become overly close with caution, just a good safeguard. And that is all I was trying to state.

I wouldn't help a guy build a born again church if he was the same guy who uses the word "gay" to describe something bad. He raises issues of tolerance for his religious views but at the same time neglects the need for other peoples' tolerances.

If you had her Calling Card, why didn't you simply message her and ask what happened, and if you should bother hanging out or going to find something else to do?

Was it more fun to try and catch her at something?

Judge not lest ye be judged? Ring any bells? Be who you are but respect that not everyone here is like you. Learn to appreciate people for who they are, not who you think they should be.

But despite all the warnings that people may not be who they say they are, does that make it RIGHT that they lie and cheat and make you feel like trash?

I must have missed the lying, cheating and trashifying in your story. She seemed to be completely open and honest with ya.

That said... Anyone who refers to human sexuality as "smut" needs some serious re-education. Someone prep the mindwashing chair!

I'd really have to say, what business is it of yours what she does with whom Jon? She wasn't your girlfriend, wife or significant other, but someone you met and had a nice talk with. In fact, following her was just plain creepy.

And why was it neccessary to mention the Buddhist pictures?

Oh my, someone please send the offender a scarlett letter *A* to attach so we all know... bleh.

Jon, did it occur to you she may be a virgin in RL but NOT in SL? And what better way to explore and find out what she may like in RL eventually?

As for the folks who are offended by SL *smut*, avoid mature sims if it affects you enough to motivate you to judge and generalize about the current social state of SL, simply avoid Mature areas. If you are unwilling to do so...then its your issue..

-You don't like strippers? Don't go to strip clubs.

-You don't like av sex? Don't have it and don't associate with those who do.

-You don't like cybering? Don't participate.

-And so on and so forth...

Unfortunately, as with most puritanical thinking, it's not simply about not liking certain lifestyles it's about the fact that it drives the offended person(s) crazy to even know it's going on.

Seek to be offended and you certainly will be rewarded.

This game offers so much anonymity that I find it downright dangerous to one's sense of ethics. When so many people can lie and fib and say things about themselves that aren't true, how likely is it that this might spill off into the real world? When you're playing Quake or Unreal Tournament, even in multiplayer you're not actually hurting anyone when you gib somebody, but in a social world I find that people who are dishonest can be very hurtful.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the internet.

And I happen to find it highly unethical to just follow someone to a private spot when they obviously didnt want to be followed.

I mentioned the Buddhist pictures because, if you were paying ANY attention to the story, I am a Christian and we had been discussing theology. My faith is incompatible with Buddhism. I respect other's views, but ... it was still disappointing to ME.

Again, she didn't do anything wrong with having a friend who was into Buddha. I was in a miserable situation nonetheless.

I was paying attention to the story and I still don't get it.

It's a few pixels on a virtual wall. There's nothing to be "incompatable" with.

And for that matter, many "buddhist pictures", as such, by most people are just taken as neat art. It's not like the cross, where it's virtually a given that people know it has deep meaning for a lot of people.

What's wrong with buddhism and what about it is incompatible with christianity?
Buddhism is more of a philosophy than a religion, and it is essentially comprised of seeking wisdom. Those who attain a certain state of enlightenment are known as buddhas, and many people see Jesus of Nazareth as one of them.
I'd say that many of the christian morals have counterparts in buddhist philosophy, and heck, in fact, most religions are strikingly similar to each other in terms of what constitutes moral behavior.
