How many of you have moved to escape UGLY??

I have moved at least three...maybe four now - yep 4 - times to escape ugly builds.

The saddest for me was a beautiful piece of land along a meandering stream that flowed into bigger bodies of water at each end. I imagined it just like it was... quiet peaceful. Why can't I ever have that? Why are we always forced to conform to someone elses idea of natural beauty??

How can we preserve land as it is?

Anyway I wanted to get a pulse for how many of us have had to move because we just couldn't look at the thing next door one more day.

I know several people who've expanded their land holdings by purposefully making their land as ugly, laggy, and just plain retarded as possible, so that neighbors would sell. Mean, but hey, you guys wanted capitalism. :(

My first land sucked. I lived next to W-HAT.

Yep, next to that huge, UGLY factory building, with the red and green ban bars surrounding the property. My poor little 512 Baku plot!

Sold it -- moved -- now I have a nice little plot with relatively nice builds next to me, even if some of them are prefabricated :)

I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't like MY build as it is made to look like a plain wooden shack, but I like it very much.

Define ugly.

I have in the past. I don't anymore. I simply wait them out. It has worked to great success in the sim where I now 'live'.

Recently, I have had 2 not so fantastic boxy builds show up next to my villa, My home was situated in the extreme NE corner of Enceladus, which was once the edge of the world with no sim to the north or east. When the new sims came in both neighbors expressed the desire to not disrupt the area with big boxy builds, yet both subsequently did so anyway. I moved my house up the hill a bit so I could get my view back. I am told one of the neighbor's build will be coming down shortly.

Once again, waiting has worked in my favor. Patience can indeed be a virtue in cases like these, as I do not dislike either of the neighbors and one I consider a friend. I could've bitched at them or neg rated them, but I chose to not disrupt the relationships I have with them over their choice of builds.

I'm sorry Ursa, I was new. I didn't know I could not change clothes in a PG sim! :p

I build in three dimensions. Ugly constructions nearby means I build in the sky and leave the ground with trees and bushes and rocks.

Just wait them out if you can, there is nothing static in SL. Sooner or later the "boxy uglies" move, or they learn how to build!.

I have moved twice in the past and neither of them were due to ugly builds. I moved from Taber back in the "prim-hogging" days due to lack of prim resources and I moved out of Varney when I decided to be a nomad and not own any land. Right now I live in Gualala and I love my neighbors.

I had a neighbor who was a friend and her builds were considered eyesores by some people, but since she was a friend I didn't mind. I don't think that I would move to due what can be considered an "ugly" build, as long as the build doesn't cause excessive lag, stream particles unto my land or any other annoyance that would cross over to my land border. :)

I'm so glad you started this thread with exactly this direct question, which is really the question under lying the "I don't get it and they just don't" thread started by Pahoa that has turned so contentious.

I'm happy to see that no one is accusing you of imposing your vision of beauty on the world, and in fact, they seem to get what you said: why must I live under the imposition of ANOTHER?

Instead, they see that the issue is that you had a vision of beauty you couldn't protect with your purchase, and had to move.

And you're quite right in attempting to find out just how widespread this problem is in SL.

Nolan has suggested waiting it out. Toy has suggested buying it out. All kinds of other tactics have been discussed too.

But isn't this phenom really what drives the Linden land auctions? Are they motivated to fix it through sim zoning? That might go a long way to fixing at least the mall/club phenom.

I didn't see her threatening to neg rate anyones builds. That's probably why her post was met with less hostility.

umm isn't that your club with the noisy scripts and the spinning light objects in Sistiana? Oh yea...it is. Have I ever complained about it causing me lag next door, nope. Pot to kettle...

Not directed to Aces - but the majority of posters on these forums (not necessarily this thread but the plethora about htis topic), who have this elitist attitude about content. I am anal. I am a perfectionist. I make mistakes and shudder at my first build in the city (still get positive rates even tho i hate it). For crying out loud people you can't force your opinion of quality on others. I mean really...I hate the combination of Lime Green and Fuscia, but damn if Torley doesn't pull it off in the wonder that is Watermelon. Ugly to some but Torley is proud, and that is symbolic of this entire debate. I think I am going to purposefully start building things as ugly as possible just to make people cringe and shudder at the sight. This attitude makes me sick. Instead of bitching, why don't you hold some instructional events so the people without your "gifts" or "talent" might be able to learn a bit.

I understand moving to something that suits your ideals better (have done it silently), but some of these opinions are demeaning to those who are new here and learning. We didn't all start at the same time and the learning curve is different for many. My skills with CAD helped me understand building quickly. I suppose I was better suited then some, but certainly still a noob compared to the likes of some here like Jimmy Thompson, Azrazael Maracas, Lumiere Noire, and Lordfly Digeridoo who combine amazing vision with skills in both in world tools and 3rd party ones for textures etc. I keep trying becasue i enjoy it, and because I get satisfaction out of what "I" made. Before you piss all over someone else's personal wonder of prims you don't like, perhaps you should consider that we aren't all as perfect as you claim to be.

Those of you who deem it necessary to complain publically about other's content on "their" land...buy a private sim.

I decided to work with my neighbors (who have terific builds!), and I guess I got lucky on at least 3 sides anyway! :)

The fourth side IS an ugly build, but what I did was put up a mural of the landscape beyond the build that is only visible from my side... the side facing the ugly build is transparent because I am a nice neighbor. :)

It isn't an imposition. Your rights end at the border of your land. The only way you can view what your neighbors do as an imposition is if you believe you have some sort of entitlement to live next to things that please you. I think that belief is flawed and unreasonable given the freeform nature of SL. To me it equates to playing a strategy game and complaining that it's not an action game. It is what it is, and your rights are what they are.

As for the poll, I've never moved and after close to two years I couldn't be happier with the state of the sim I live in. Patience is definitely a virtue here.

I am a new player and not yet attempting to actually build a darn thing. I have what I guess is a pre-fab house, since it cost a buck and came in a box :) Nice looking to me, big windows overlooking the ocean. I'm reading these posts and trying hard to understand why it is mattering so much to people what your neighbors build. I've been exploring a lot, spending most of the time flying around to places on and off the lists, and found some places which to me were awesome and interesting, others that didn't look real nice to me, but then I just will not go back to those...I can see an issue about the lag, I would not enjoy having the game affected that way at my house. But as far as "eyesores" go...just not really understanding what the problem is...look the other way? Put up something on your own property that blocks the Ugly? It's a treat to have a game like this where anyone's imagination and creativity can come out, even if, in your own opinion that creativity sucks. lol
I'm a TSO refugee and after spending two years with the exact same 5 couches and beds, you appreciate things that are different, even if they are uglier than the ugliest anniversary present you could get from TSO.
It's all just matter of opinion and personal tastes in the end. The discussions can basically end up like a discussion on politics, religion or abortion. Everyone is right and no one is right. :)

I have once escaped the wrath of Kurohyu Song in Kishijoten by moving to Laka... I bought up the surrounding land. I am using walls that are invisible on one side. It is very hard to protect the view of the surroundigns of your land, sometimes costly but I have managed.

Unless you get a private island, you can never truly have everything the way you want it.

You could have solved that problem a lot easier. Whatever Kuro may be, a builder she is not. However, at least when I knew her, she was open about it, and would have accepted any help or criticism in the spirit it was intended. Helping her to prettify the build might have been a much cheaper and more rewarding option.

Yes, that's a good point. It's a shame that these two threads, one about negrating ugly obstruction builds, and Pahoa's thread about her grievances, got inextricably mixed, and in fact Pahoa even got her grief in part because she first read a previous forum THEN reacted to my request in-world with that baggage.

I've never publicly threatened anyone with a negrate, either. Except for one quickly-resolved incident, any negrates, actual or threatened, have been private matters, and most reversed.

I've negrated without publicizing it in-game for reasons I spelled out in the other thread.

So to be clear once again, I haven't engaged in public individual or group negrating, what I have done is raised for public discussion the appropriateness of negrating ugly lag builds that force people to move, and also raised for public discussion whether such builds that so inflict pain on people and the landscape shouldn't be targed by group negrates.

For. Public. Discussion. But it isn't an action I've taken, and as I've explained I don't advocate it for any problematic or potentially problematic neighbours actually in SL. So don't worry.

What I've found is that this stirred up a firestorm of criticism because people want to defend their turf aggressively. They don't see it as akin to debating the pros and cons of legal abortion, they see it as about labeling you as a baby-killer.
