spec·u·la·tor n. One that speculates: a commodities speculator; a speculator regarding the future turn of events.
Source: The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition Copyright © 2000 by Houghton Mifflin Company. Published by Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved.
speculator
A person who is willing to take large risks and sacrifice the safety of principal in return for potentially large gains. Certain decisions regarding securities clearly characterize a speculator. For example, purchasing a very volatile stock in hopes of making a half a point in profit is speculation, but buying a U.S. Treasury bond to hold for retirement is an investment. It must be added, however, that there is a big gray area in which speculation and investment are difficult to differentiate.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nothing "perjorative" about being a speculator, at all. A lot of them used to call themselves that when people first started to call them "Land Barons", as that phrase seemed to liken them to the Railroad Trusts. Eventually, "Land Baron" and sometimes "Land Developer", seemed to replace "Land Speculator". BTW, Philip used the phrase "Land Speculator" while defending the practice at town halls after the advent of 1.2. Hell, the thread starter even uses the term "Baron" when referring to land dealers. "Baron" certainly carries much more of a negative connotation than "speculator". Who wants to be compared to historical monopolies?
Now, LL should have taken a bigger cross section of profiles before firing it up. This was an invitation to exactly this type of thread.
On the issue of people not liking clubs, note that most of the examples given list "socialization" or some form there of, among their likes. This tells me that they are not anti-social people, they just don't like clubs, probably because of lag. Hell, I tried to go The Edge last night to test a new PC I put together yesterday. Guess what? I was frozen in place the first several minutes after I got within a few hundred meters, during repeated attempts. After I could finally move, it was like wading through quicksand. This is a legitimate reason to dislike clubs. This does not mean that people who list clubs among their dislikes are anti-social assholes locked up in their builds crafting tekkie-wiki projects.
It's odd that "someone" is complaining about people being averse to clubs yet that same person is the loudest pundit on the issue of CPU cycle hogs. Should clubs be exempt from that rule?

From: Merwan Marker Yeah - including the "dislikes" seems pretty short-sighted to me. It did seem odd to me to include "dislikes". Admittedly, I dislike going to clubs, malls, and casinos -- "that's not my bag, baby". But highlighting it in a profile makes it look like I'm anti-club or something, which isn't the case at all. It's my understanding -- correct or not -- that these are only the first profiles that will appear on the site, and they'll rotate them to include others.

From: Cocoanut Koala AND OH YES! DEFINITELY no need to refer to the group as "land speculators" - which has a very poor connotation - when you can just as easily say, "real estate agent." Tsk tsk tsk. This is a little off-topic, but a "land speculator" and a "real estate agent" are very different things. A real estate agent doesn't own the land they're buying selling -- they act as an agent of the buyer or seller and take a commission. A land speculator buys and sells land themselves, which is what happens in SL.

coco Lets not rewrite the meaning of the word to fit it to an agenda, ok? Please go read the actual definition above that I posted. While your at it, please explain to me exactly what is the "negative" connotation implied by "Speculator"? It simply means taking a risk on commodities. Period. As I said above, there was a time when many "Land Salespersons" called themselves that. Coco, PLEASE read the definition. I would say you're splitting hairs, however, there's not even a hair to split here. I have NEVER heard someone imply that the word speculator, when applied to economic matters, was a negative term, EVER. What a shock that it's emanating from folks who embrace conspiracy theories. A shock indeed.

Strangely, the clutter in the foreground that blocks the view of your Feted Interior Wall wasn't built by the Same Old Featurati -- must have been included by accident. I'm sure whatever Linden is responsible will be getting a pink slip as soon as the oversight is reported to LL by its Oldbie overlords. In closing: Have a nice day, Prokofy!

Exhausted by yet another day of fighting the FIC, the Antagonist falls onto his bed and closes his eyes, there to be beseiged by visions of tiny cobalt-wing'd demons that mockingly stick out their tongues at him and don't invite him to parties.

From: Prokofy Neva The Lindens' new website is really a thing of great beauty and joy! Check it out!
It is marred by some of the usual prejudices, however.
Now...why are we not surprised to see the same-old, same-old FICs among the Feature-ati? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know it gets *so tiresome* hearing Prok yammer on and on about the FIC -- but I mean, do I make this stuff up? There it is on the website once again, blecth.
On the one hand, here's what the ad copy says:
Party endlessly -- got that?
Now note what the featurati say:
Marcos Fonzarelli Joined: Feb 27, 2004 SL Profession: vatar customization Store: ARMORD Space Needle Complex SL Income: “I make enough to pay my tier and have some left over.” Location: Miramare (x,y) Sign: Aries Likes: Building avatars and structures, Hanging out with friends. Dislikes: Clubs & casinos Tips for beginners: “If you want to have a business, make something you like. Put your creativity into it, and someone will most likely buy it and enjoy it too.”
Aimee Weber Joined: February 2004 SL Profession: Clothing designer Store: *PREEN* Location: Umber (91, 164), Hawthorne (195, 200) SL Income: "I make much much more money than I actually need. I give a lot of it away." Sign: Scorpio Likes: Socializing, flirting, making clothing, building really gritty city scenes, and making people laugh Dislikes: Dance clubs, griefing and sex balls Tip for beginners: “Focus on yourself and your work and try to find joy in what you do. Every moment you spend trying to bring down your competitors is a moment you are not improving your own skills
Cubey Terra Joined: September 2003 SL Profession: Aircraft builder Store: Abbotts Aerodrome Location: Abbotts (40, 160) Sign: Libra Likes: Building, scripting, modeling, skydiving at Abbotts Aerodrome, visiting Luskwood Dislikes: Clubs, casinos, malls Tip for beginners : “Don't come out of the gate expecting to earn wads of cash. SL isn't about cash. It's about people. Meet people, learn what people do and like in SL, then figure out what YOU want to do in SL. If you're really good at it, then you'll probably make money at it. If not, then hey... you'll probably have fun anyway.”
See what I mean? On the one hand, lure in the masses with promises of endless parties in clubs where you might meet that special someone and couple up!
On the other hand, the hand-picked, selected, feated inner core featureati are here to tell you with great disdain that they "dislike" clubs, casinos, and sex balls. Yuckies! So, take home that message please! If you, too, want to succeed, HATE clubs and casinos! BOOOO!
Now, I was dying to see what they'd say about busineses!
See? Every single job or profession is denoted without any bias. Gunsmith is just gunsmith, not "manufacturer of death machine". Even "nightclub owner" is just "nightclub owner" -- not "owner-of-thing-Aimee-hates".
But...a person who buys and sells land is a real estate speculator...BOOO!!! HISSSS!!!!
EBIL CREATURE! *Speculating* in land -- flipping it over to make a profit! HORRIBLE!
The Lindens always let you know what they are really up to. They do it every time. They are encouraging masses of people to try the game. They are about funnelling some of them in a kind of medieval guild apprentice system through some of the selected artisans and guild chiefs. They are about discouraging mass, low-brown entertainment like clubs and casinos by letting every know what the elite say about them.
Of course, by fronting those "randomy selected" FIC-ites, the Lindens have plausible deniability.
Interesting, a few other people featured like Trimda Hedges and Mistress Midnight had no "dislikes" they had to inflict on anybody.
Am I just looking for conspiracy theories? Am I just perpetuating an interesting myth?
No, I'm looking at a website, and taking home the message I'm meant to take home. And once again Prokofy raises some very valid and interesting issues I respect people who have courage and speak out their mind. And I do respect those who point out the flaws in ones argument by use of logic. But I don't respect those who kiss ass of the authorities and gang-bash whoever is "victim of the week".
