Swing by southern california and I'll sign it :)

(If the project gets too cumbersone, you can always paint the prim gray and blame it on lag)

Got at least two of us in Orange County, CA. Put us on the list for the So Cal visit.

(P.S. Do you think you might start calling the cube Wilson by the end of the drive?)

Hey Maxx, if you come through Yellowstone National Park (an awesome place to drive through no matter the reason) you can catch 2/3rds of the remaining Underhills at once, MadameThesp and I are both nearby. (Makes note to self to check where Tweke is.)

(Thanks for letting me know about this Upshaw) ;)

Yes, Maxx, you'll actually get CaboWabo Song's signature too (he's my hubby and we're both old beta peeps as well.) Let us know if and when you plan to swing by Yellowstone. We'd love to sign it!

No idea where I'll be this summer, but I'm sure I can coincide with your route at some point (being a full-time RVer currently).

Thanks for all the responses, I've been crunching the numbers, and I think it will be possible to hit all the stops mentioned, but I have more planning to do. As you'll see from the figures I'll post, that it will be a long trip :)

In some kind of order (pending optimizations, routing):

(State, City, Leg Mileage from last point)

Illinois - Chicago
Michigan - (Assuming Lansing) - Miles: 216.74
Ohio - Columbus - Miles: 256.57
Connecticut - (Assuming Hartford) - Miles: 666.12
New Jersey - (Assuming Trenton) - Miles: 175.54
New York - (Circuit through NYC to Brentwood, Long Island) - Miles: 100.39
Pennsylvania - Philadelphia - Miles: 142.45
Maryland - (Assuming Annapolis) - Miles: 123.84
Washington D.C. - Miles: 32.98
Tennessee - (Assuming Nashville) - Miles: 665.76
Georgia - Atlanta - Miles: 248.22
Alabama - Huntsville - Miles: 195.18
Florida - Orlando - Miles: 634.76
Florida - Fort Lauderdale - Miles: 212.32
Texas - (Assuming Austin) - Miles: 1327.5
Colorado - Denver - Miles: 1063.02
Wyoming - (Circuit through Cody, Yellowstone) - Miles: 491.85
Oregon - (Assuming Salem) - Miles: 1013.31
Washington - Seattle - Miles: 219.63
(Don't worry Cubey, still working on the Vancouver, Canada thing...)
California - Sacramento - Miles: 753.18
(To the person in Orange county, perhaps we could meet up in San Fran?)
California - Linden Lab, San Francisco - Miles: 86.26

Total Mileage (not counting return trip): 8,625.62 Miles
Return Trip to Chicago: 2,145.28 Miles

Grand Total Mileage: 10,770.9 Miles

Fuel Costs (Assumes average refill at 1/4 tank remaining plus 2$ avg per/gal fillup): $861.67

Toll Costs: Unknown, probably another $100 to total trip cost.

Drive Time (Outbound trip only at 55mph avg): 6.5 days (24hr solid), 13.069 (12hr driving stretches)

Drive Time (Total trip at 55mph avg): 8.15 days (24hr solid), 16.319 (12hr driving stretches)

Of course, that doesn't take into account stops or stayovers or whatever. Heh.
I think an international cube is called for on its own - the USA trip will be intensive enough.
I think its going to be a month-long experience :)

Anyway, if you can see where my destinations are wrong or whatever, please let me know, I'd like to shape it up into a more final form...

I'll bet there's a lot of Angelinos and OC residents in SL. Maybe we can get a large group of us to pool money into your plane ticket fund? Just a suggestion. Then again, I've always wanted an excuse to see San Fransico...

I am bummed that you are making that turn in TX rather than coming straight across, but it is your trip. And it is a killer idea, so I will try to keep my sadness to a minimum.

If you do decide to come anywhere like LA, OC or San Diego, please update your itinerary and let me know.

I've been thinking about this, and I may just split up the tour to East and West coastal areas, keeping the same list, but not doing it *all* in one shot. We'll see. Then I'd be able to meet you guys where you are, instead of asking you to travel.

I do plan on driving it all, just for the fun of it.

Well, like I said just recently, this whole thing may be better served to split up, since 10k miles is an awful lot in one go. So please put your city in your post, so I can figure it out. I don't want to exclude people if I can help it..

Don't be bummed!

Also I'd like to add, in the states where I have (Assumed <capitol name>;), I'd like some help in determining where I'd go to drive. You all may not even be near a capitol of the state I'll visit, I only put that in there to get a rough estimate of the travel distances. Please help me and post the area you'd probably be able to meet me in.

Thanks!

Maxx:

Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT go to Trenton, NJ! Its a total dump. :-) You'd have better luck sticking to northern NJ near NYC or southern NJ near Philly... or, if in the summer, the Jersey shore. Trenton ... uh... what's the word I'm looking for... oh yes... RUN!

Yes, stay fer fer away frem Trenton. If going to NJ, the Jersey Shore might be a good diversion. Other possible meeting places might include New Brunswick or Freehold, or skipping NJ entirely and asking the Jersey folk to just show up at the NYC or Philly get-together.

-Are people going to sign with a magic marker or pen, or a wood-burning pen?

-Will you be looking for suggestions on sightseeing sorts of things to do on your trip? I'm sure that many members would be willing to show you around their corner of the world, and, since you're driving all over the place anyway, you might be interested in seeing the sights. (Other than the insides of numerous bars, which naturally people will already be your tourguides to ;) )

Trinity, Nala, and a few others are in San Diego also. So yeah, lots of Southern Cal people. But I also think a few more northern ones (in addition to Pituca and Garth). CA is so huge. You may yeah, want to consider a south north thing. Just something to think about.

And of course.. The Alabama and Georgia people, I think we can all find a common meeting place or something. That may help some. :D

The cube is being worked on, I settled for 19" square oak panels (mitered inside 45s angles), with one side I'll have to manually glue so I can cross the border into Canada when the time comes. They just like to use more than an X-Ray to look at things, I guess, so I can't completely enclose it before hitting The Great White North. (Thanks for letting me know about that, Cubey.)

So to answer questions, it seems more likely that I'll split up the tour into two parts, so it gives me enough time to hit all the destinations stateside, and not beat my car to death in one go. I'll be asking for more route clarification as it goes, but basically I'll hit all the stops that fall within say, no farther west than Texas, then do the rest of them on a second planned trip.

Thanks for the interest, I think it will be fun to do.

As for pics and things, I realize people are not always agreeable towards that, and I'll respect it of course. I just want to take pics of the cube in different areas at a minimum. As far as sightseeing - well, other than some points of interest that involve alcohol and bar stools, I don't know if I'll have a lot of time to just look around. We'll see.

I'll keep updating this as it develops.
