Wow. Really, wow. Kool, you've said SO many things that I want to reply to, yet, I don't have all the time in the world, so, I won't.

You say that you can do everything in There that you can here. No, you can't. Sorry, you JUST CAN'T.

You CAN'T build in There like you can here. Our building is much more advanced -- we can build in realtime, where you have to build in a 3rd party program called gMax. (Incase you don't know, 3rd party means that There Inc (Now called Forterra) was too lazy to create their own program for users to use.).

You CAN'T own your own island in There. Some people claim islands, yes, but, you DON'T own them. Period.

You CAN'T easily create clothing in There. You can create the shirt, but then you have to go through a submissions process. That costs "ThereBucks". "ThereBucks" cost real US Dollars. (I'd suggest using those US Dollars to get professional help...sorry, getting off topic.)

You CAN'T create your own new types of vehicles in There. All you can do is take existing vehicles and change the way they look -- if you're that lucky! Some of the vehicles in There don't even let you do that! Oh, and those that do, There wants you to pay more "ThereBucks" to do it!

I saw you mention how big There's world is compared to Second Life's. Excuse me, There's world is, like, 99.5% water. I use the term water loosely, since it's actually just a blue solid that covers the planet. The 'water' doesn't have any physical properties of water -- it's not even phantom like our water in SL. It's not even somewhat transparent! :O

Oh, one last thing...I saw you mention early in this thread how dark and gloomy SL is, yet, in one of your latest posts, you mention how you can't find anywhere in the world that is as dark as "Tyr" in There? (For those that don't know, Tyr is a very dark and gloomy location in There. It's always night time there.)

You're contradicting yourself. You're making a fool of yourself. You're completely believing There's marketing. You are exactly what they love to see. The other die-hard Thereians must LOVE you. You're a hero.

Do you even realize that There is in financial trouble? The FOUNDER and CREATOR of There has LEFT and formed his own company (www.IMVU.com)?? Most of the programmers and artists were FIRED from There??? The company actually CHANGED THEIR NAME and CHANGED THEIR FOCUS away from virtual worlds and more towards military & business contracts????

I can't wait to see what you say when your beloved There is no more. (Of course, with your horrible spelling and grammar, I doubt I'd be able to understand it.)

Do you see that dot key on your keyboard? When you press it, it gives you a . Try it sometime. :)

Ok hmm u think we dont know all that. We do and we hate the founder for leaving his own world the world we gave us. I have been taking every thing u people say and post it in There forums. I use IMVU to chat and most There members use it too. I am a die hard Thereian i wont let u crush our sweet sweet world. U people are lunie lunie i hope one of ur "lindens" one day sell out on u and then the chain of evil will fall. The dark age of SL of the evil will die and be no more! You "world" i wont call it that ur flat land if nothin but a big long island an island and ur water is rivers. You have to use scripts to make space we have it built already. We have temples and artifacts from "old world". Some Thereians want to share our world with u and i use to now i see the evil and sick twistedness that LL has but in ur already poor sick heards. If i ever see a SLer in There again i will come in this world and bring an army witch will build and build There and take over ur SL.

OMG HAHAH! What are you TALKING about? Do you even see what you're typing? My god! You're saying that you want to take over SL with an army? Lindens, please lock this thread. It's gotten so stupid already.

Zuma, go back to There. Please. The monkey gods have some more propaganda to feed you about how There is great and SL sucks.

Kool, you've said several times more or less that you don't like SL because it is slow as molasses. That is a basic problem that will kill any enjoyment of SL. But it is something with your computer or dsl line not being good enough. The rest of us don't have that problem. Until you can take care of that you might as well quit SL because it won't be any fun.

For the love of god man, get back on your medication! What the hell are you so hysterical about? If you represent the quality of player one can expect to find in There, I'm damn glad I never tried it.

Mmm-hmm. Well.. One Guy's Opinion. ;>
09-21-2004 12:02
I've been in There for about 3 months. And I've been in SL for about 6 weeks now. Here's my double-summary. I do consider it "objective" in Kool's methodology, as I have spent more time in There than I have in Second Life and so I have the same amount of experience.... but my prognosis between them may be a bit different. Remember, people, these are personal observations and views. As are everyone's. I do not force people to agree with me. When I say that one is better than the other, it means It's better FOR ME. Others opinions may differ. They are entitled to them. And this is my opinion(s):

THERE:
======
Well, I spent a few months in There before I arrived in SL. Not having much free cash, I never was able to make anything in There. My days consisted of picking up people's discarded stuff and then seeing how big a pyramid of discarded buggies and hoverboats I could build. Watching people in convos that were always too full to join. Listening to primative 'l33tsp33k' that sounds alarmingly like Kool's own voice. Visiting the same 4-5 places every day... due to only a few places in There really having anything worth visiting. Yet Never seeing anyone I met twice.

Other than my face and body, I would have had to pay to change myself more. Other than that I was limited to what I could afford to buy from other shops, none of which was really out of the ordinary or special. If you couldn't afford to buy your Therebucks, you were out of luck. Compound that with having to make payments and you're really limited in creativity. 3-4 types of buggy with 400 paint jobs... well, that really wasn't a lot of variety, honestly.

There's only so much fun to be had from talking, driving hoverboards/hoverboats/buggies/jetpacks around mostly-empty islands. There were a few interesting places, like the one funny mountain in Tyr that if you managed to reach the right spot, you'd find weird sounds eminating from a remote mountainside that sounded pretty cool. I also somewhat liked the big bone graveyard thingummy... errr, whatever it was called... The hoverboard tricks and such were neat for a while, but after a while it got tedious, and I found that plummeting/tumbling down a huge cliff and watching the ragdoll physics flail me around was more fun... and that's not a good thing. :>

People hardly ever introduced themselves or returned a greeting. I felt like I was butting in on everything as I'd get ignored. This is what irked me the most, and what pushed me into collecting people's vehicles.

Well, the graphics.. weren't bad, but it wasn't great either. The almost cel-shaded look was a bit simplistic and in some cases textures seemed to clash with the environment. The way details dropped off sharply as you got further away from things was a bit distracting as well, a distant crowd looked almost like a line of icons. Finally.. all those word balloons would really clutter up in a crowd and demanded being turned off constantly. x.x

For what it was worth, sound was functional. Wind was a bit too prevelant to me, even when you were indoors. ;>

SECOND LIFE:
============
SL came along, and within a week, I'd made a name for myself, within a month I'd made over a dozen bird avvies. Entered countless contests, won many, met dozens of people that I see almost every day. Attended classes. Learned how basic 3D works. Learned Photoshop (I was die hard PSP until SL). I own a shop in one of the trendiest malls in SL (Yay Mochastyle!), and am currently sharing land with my in-game sweetie. ^_^

By the end of the first day I'd figured out the clothing templates and uploaded an almost picture perfect copy of myself into the system for a mere 20L$ (the texture cost for shirt and jeans). I also did a bulk upload of 10 wavs for my voices, which I attached to my gestures.

I do admit that There has better sound in some cases. Other than music loops, streaming music, and sound effects, there's not a lot of 'ambience' in SL at the moment. If I was to make land, the streaming audio track would definately involve music with some background ambience for the area. I do like to load my own sounds up.

Despite much vegetation often being made of flat linked prims, I do like the look of SL here. The irks I have with SL has got to be (1) the ability to preview an uploaded texture on a prim, and (2) some people make some awful looking stuff. One thing in There I do miss was having to have your creations aprroved by the ingame staff.

Just this weekend, I became a Mentor, and I'm happy to help others have as much fun as I have. I've felt that I belonged. I've felt that I've got a purpose.

CONCLUSION:
===========
In There, I was somebody, sure... but in Second Life, I am an individual. And besides, being a plain ol' humie in There gets boring after a few days. :>

INTERESTING KOOL QUOTES:
========================
[1] "lindens" are a thret to man kind and the worlds of There TSO and AW
A: Wait, wait, wait. You're bringing up Active Worlds here? Now if you classify Active Worlds in with There.... wow. SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP. Active Worlds vs There was like comparing 'Atari Combat' to 'Battlefield 1942'.

[2] what in the hell is a "dance machine" what happend to emotes
A: Gestures = Emotes. The difference being that gsetures can be programmed to respond in any way you choose, play any animations, speak, make sounds, even perform a complex string of all of the above that can even be used to create an entire performance. 'Nuff said.

[3] or u can do what i do and let second life load for 3 hours before u can go and walk
A: Funny. Mine takes about 6 seconds. So judging by my 1.1 ghz machine, you must have a... uhhh... Wow, that's a small number. It must be a VIC-20 or something. Are you faxing information back and forth through your 300-baud modem while you play? It could be slowing your blistering connection.

[4] cant u be satifed with over 2,302,102,000 miles of land and sea
A: Uhh... hmmmm. It takes 7.5 minutes to fly over Second Life from end to end. It takes 3 minutes to fly over There end to end in the tropical world. I'd say with all the worlds combined, There is only about 2-3 times larger than SL. Most of There seems to be empty forests, vehicle tracks, combat arenas, homes, and shops.

[5] Some people want to look like wolf monsters or rain birds with horns.
A: As the duly recognized founder and leader of the rain bird community, I would like to notify that 'those are not horns, they are pinions'. What's wrong with wanting to be unique? I'd rather die unique than live as a conformist. ^_^

ADDITIONAL:
==========
Q: "Why does this post sound so one-sided?"
A: Because for me, it /was/ one-sided. There was a place to visit. Second Life was a place to live. When SL is down I do occassionally visit There still. But honestly speaking... I don't have much to do when I am There. I will probably remove my account soon as now Sims 2 has become my primary computer habitat outside of SL. :)

Q: "Who are you in There?"
A: My sweetie knows who I am in There. And that's what important. I am generally an unknown to the rest of There, since I can't really be unique in There to stand out. :>

You are so so right. The only reason i came into SL is to do something that other did not feel was right. I was payed by a club in There called There Police to do whatever i could to make others mad and mess up the world. But in the beging i was stupid walking along hating SL. But then a member named tina showed me a world that was much much much more then There. I fell in love with SL trying to understand it and learn it. But i went back in There told the club that i didnt do any thing but that i found that SL is a wounderful world. Then they said they would pay me 80k in tbux. So i found a guy that had an idem called fire and i copyed it and spread it all over SL. In doing that i learned that the people i called my friends were not my friends. Plus i lost my chance to be a member of SL if i ever go back in i would have only hate mail to read. I am sorry for what i did and i understand if no one forgives me at all.

Well, I believe we can all applaud TinaStar for helping Kool to have a fun time in SL. :D

For me, I've seen these types of things redundantly before, it's like being put in O'Neill and Teal'c's situation in Stargate SG-1's "Window of Opportunity" ep. I highly recommend it. Gah... if I want mind-numbing, repetitive loops, I'll listen to techno music! ;)

I've seen all sorts of things before from MACS VS. PC to INTEL VS. AMD to ROLAND VS. YAMAHA (synthesizers) to STAR WARS VS. STAR TREK.

When it comes down to it, I like to keep my options open, and if I can have the best of both worlds and beyond, I will. I'm an AND person, not an OR person. :)

Dear goodness, monkey gods?

Would you like second life any more if the lindens published a picture book with a story about monkey gods?

I think this thread has some valid criticisms of both Second Life and There, but the thing is, neither is an all day perfect activity.

You should open your front door and try getting some sunlight. Go into town and try on a new pair of jeans. Go to the cinema and watch a film.

And then when you're bored with all that and want to ride a buggy, sign on to There. And when you feel a creative itch, come to Second Life.

It's not one or the other, you can have both, and a full life too... Just do what makes you happy :)

Kool what is your problem. Its kind of stupid to post a thread that you know thats going to start a big argument making people angry. There are bad things about There and SL. You need to get more things to support you that SL sucks. Oh scripting sucks building sucks blah. I really don't even think you even have tried to build or script or you just can't. Want to start an argument want to start WW3 you go do that but not here.
Learn how to spell more people will not think you are a minor and will listen to your bullshit.
Remember these are my thoughts. Myself I prefer SL but there also good things about There too but I just can't stand assholes like this guy. Now I wonder if I went to a There forum saying crap abot their game without much to support it.

Why are you all feeding this troll?

Kool, learn some freaking puncuation. And go back to school!

When you turn 18, come back to Second Life. Maybe you'll have passed an English course by then.

I'm not sure if anyone already said this because I didnt want to waste my time reading through this ridiculous thread.

#1. You don't need to script in order to build in SL. Scripts simply give 'life' to your built objects.

#2. I tried There. I uninstalled only 15 minutes of trying it. It was like going to Mac after using a PC my whole life. (no offense mac users) it just made my brain numb with it's horrible lack of anything to do. It's like a glorified chatroom that tries to trick you into thinking there is so much to offer. The av options are extremely limited. No customized gestures/animations. No customization of anything but clothing. And even that is limited. Oh and don't forget saving a new 'look' costs REAL MONEY by paying for 'There Bucks'. In fact everything in There is bought with real money by paying for There Bucks. There really isn't a virtual money source in There.

And you want to talk about graphics? One thing I did like about There was that it didn't lag my computer up at all, but maybe that's because the models are extremely low poly, and textures look that of Yoshi's Island (painted by a kid).

However, this being said. I did like the idea of There being on a more realistic global scale instead of a flat grid of sims like SL.

Just my opinions.
