From: Kris Ritter I already agreed with you in the other thread.
I've never liked the whole L$==USD thing. As I've told people before, and has been another unpopular view of mine, as far as I'm concerned, Second Life plummeted into a whole new era of selfish, capitalist, fuck you-ism the day GOM opened its doors. No offense, but I'm sure you are mistaken. The free market empowers people. Probably the opposite actually happened: SL improved. After all, it was not until after the advent of GOM that I even became aware of SL - I found out by reading an article about it in the Wall Street Journal.

From: Spider Mandala SWEET!!! so my *flawless* 0 negatives and many positives score is going to die simply because newer people are whining because they cant compete with someone whos BEEN wracking up rates for a long time! OMG AWESOME, could we possibly also give every single person in game like 30000 lindens and their own sim? that would be RAWK! I can't understand why anyone would want to actually hold on to all thoe positive ratings they got while they were pioneering this world. No... decaying rates is an awesome idea. I simply cant WAIT to see my impressively spotless records go down the toilet.
LL, I thought selling top pick spots was stupid... I thought many of the changes that have been implemented were made rather poorly with little regard to the community and especially to the older community that have been SUPPORTING you.... but this, this takes the cake. All my time here, all my effort to be a good citizen and not get neg rated and contribute to the world is now going to "decay" because someone who hasnt done ANYTHING complains that they dont have what I do?
This is just stupid. Like I said... This is like some new kid who was just hired demanding to receave the same pay as someone who had worked at the company for 10 years. The Lindens need to abandon this disasterous plan of erasing ratings right now.

I'd like to just make a request that "new players whining" not be blamed for these ratings changes. Let's get serious, people. These changes are being made to promote a huge L$ money sink. Don't ever think any of the recent changes are "for the people." LL has lost regard for promoting a "unique, creative, online culture." I'll say it again. LL wants SL to be a Capitalist online venture. That's so obvious. Ebay? C'mon, wake up. Don't blame new players. That makes it too easy for LL.
Next those roads will be complete with sidewalks, driveways, white picket fences, and Asian-styled "For Sale" signs in everyone's front yard.
Some of these things are happening already and they are -promoted- and -encouraged- by LL. So, stop blaming one another and focus on what is REALLY going on here. LL pulls the strings. And they are NOT reacting to new players' dissent.

It is clear that this is part of a plan to remove as many of the current monetary benefits as possible. It's obvious that they don't intend for the price change to actually increase the effect of rating on the supply of money. How could they expect us to rate each other at a dollar amount greater than we did before? I think it's a lot more likely that the rating system will die a quiet and welcome death in about 6 months.
The bonus system is being decimated. The grant system is almost gone. And it's mathematically straightforward that - as the number of landowners increases - the amount of traffic bonus per capita will drop. Eventually, it will stop being an issue except for those who create the most spectacular builds or events.
The Lindens should be able to control the economy effectively by controlling land release and the value of the linden to the dollar. If they really DO need a money sink, there's always good ol' TAXES. Or, I suppose, they could just set aside a chunk of that 8 million US dollars and use it to buy and sell whatever needs buying and selling. It's not a ridiculous idea to load a few Linden alts with some cash and a mission to shop.
I have mixed feelings about this. I'm not a big fan of government programs - except those tightly focussed on particular problems or populations. I'd much rather they started handing out research grants, or no-interest loans based on need. I won't mind the end of bonuses, stipends, ratings, etc. So, why do I have issues with this whole process?
Well, it's the honesty in the whole thing. If Philip issued a proclamation tomorrow saying that they have decided to phase out all the basic government handouts, I think I'd applaud. When it all goes on behind the scenes - and shows up all renamed and sugar coated and disguised - I tend to become mistrustful. I'm already having this exact same problem in the real world - I'd prefer a better standard in Second Life.
I sure would love to have a look at an honest 5-year plan.
Anyway, Lindens, lets just go ahead and dump the ratings, since that's where we're headed anyway - at least for most of us. That would be much more palatable than minimizing the value of the ratings many of us have taken as one mark of our social success in this society. Ok. We apparently misunderstood, but that's no reason to be cavalier about it.
Just kill it.

Time for us oldtimers to screenshot our ratings and call it a day. Ratings have died for me now - why in the world would I pay 25L$ to rate someone only to have it drop off after a few months? I'd be better off giving that person the L$ instead - hey now that's an idea....

I personally treasure my ratings beyond the money they give me. Many of them are reminders of when I first joined almost a year ago, and were given to me from many people I rarely if ever see or talk to anymore and I'm sad that the one little part of them I have left is being taken away. I'd really appreciate a Linden response to all this. I just don't feel this was thoroughally thought through. Why do people who have the wrong motives for things have to ruin it for those of us with the right ones?
